In a move that is bound to upset at least a few people CCP has announced they will be dropping the classic graphics version of EVE Online due to cost implications. The EVE Developer Blog explains more.

It requires us to downtune our graphics engine quite a bit, for one, as well as maintain the "Classic" client version of EVE along with the Premium one. That means creating two versions of each art asset we want to put into the game. It complicates build and patching processes considerably and, for the most part, it simply doesn't allow us to make EVE look as beautiful as we want. The core issues we deal with are:
• Spending too much time and resources maintaining 2 clients
• Due to a dual pipeline we have less time implementing performance enhancements
It may finally be time for some of those people to upgrade... It's not like Eve is incredibly taxing on a halfway decent system.
Plus, they have to know how many people are using the lower tier art assets, and they must have determined that the loss of subscribers wasn't gong to effect their install base that much.
The old requirements were absolutely ridiculous. They support Radeon 7000 cards. Anyone remember those? Yeah, me neither.
The most bitching I've seen from people are those with multiple accounts who run the extras on shitty laptops they have lying around. That and people who travel a lot and like to play the non-3D part of EVE anyway.
I've tried to get into eve multiple times... each time trying to find a corporation that would take me out to PvP..
It always ended up being a 'camp' at a jumpgate waiting for someone to come.... 30 minutes of adrenaline ended with a 20 second battle...
Im not judging the game by this, as im sure I keep getting bad corporations... BUT i really wanted to get into this game
Aw, the classic version was great to play EVE at work - basically log on and switch skills. But, is pretty long in the tooth. Kudos to them for keeping it going this long

I'd think they'd find a way to make this work considering that one of WoW's biggest technical achievements is that it runs on a huge range of machines.
I don't know if my laptop would run it well enough to justify subscribing, and before you yammer at me to upgrade you should know I don't own a desktop anymore.
I'm not sure. I'm sure Evil would be your friend if he still regularly plays.
It was for the poster above me. Alas as much I love EVE I just don't have the time to play it except when I'm doing a feature on it or the like but play time is much easier to justify when it is boosting your bank balance rather than depleting it.
