According to Activision by way of Joystiq, Guitar Hero 3 is the first franchise game ever to top $1 Billion in sales. Interesting enough, Activision only paid $100 Million to get the name a year earlier... so that's a pretty good investment I think.

The success of the franchise isn't just good news for the game industry, as Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith has cited Nielson SoundScan data, which claims that artists featured in the Guitar Hero series have seen download sales increase between 15-843%. As for the publisher's financial standing, if GameStop's top selling holiday titles are any indication, Activision should enjoy a lucrative quarter headlined by Guitar Hero World Tour, Call of Duty: World at War and that Lich King guy from the World of Warcraft.
I thought GH2 was a better game personally, but those are some pretty high sales.
GH3 was the last GH game I bought. I figured after GH1, 2 & 3 plus Rock Band, I didn't need any more. Of course, I haven't really played in several months either.
I thought this genre was played out last year. I guess I am a lousy market analyst. The good news is that this means several MMOs will be really successful in 2009.

Is harmonix getting a cut of these italicized comments? Im glad the mainstream and numbers have clearly established GH as the number one franchise in the genre. World Tour is the best of them all if you ask me.
I didn't like the way that Guitar Hero 3 played. Seems like Neversoft didn't have the hang off the genre yet. Guitar Hero Aerosmith played a lot better and the rhythm parts actually felt more like the rhythm of playing the actual song. I haven't tried World Tour yet but hopefully they continued to get better as they did with the Aerosmith game.
