With a lack of proper terms and science, the basic idea is two projectors aim at the same screen with slightly different pictures, and the glasses only allow the image from one projector into each lens. Since you're seeing the same thing at two ever so slightly different angles, it looks 3D. If you take the glasses off, the parts that are 3D look blurry.
And 3D movies kick ass. The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D was so good after seeing it that watching it 2D just isn't the same. Disney's Bolt was also a good use of 3D, and I don't usually see newer Disney movies. And I can't wait for home 3D to take off so that I can finally buy a disc version of Superman Returns with the 3D scenes in it.
The next movie I want to see in 3D would be Pixar's Up. I'll wait for reviews on My Bloody Valentine 3D, but I have no interest in Coraline, 3D or not.
