It looks like James Armstrong, Sony's chief executive in southern Europe, may have spoken too soon when he told a Spanish newspaper Gran Turismo 5 will be released in Europe by Christmas 2009. Automotive enthusiast magazine import Tuner has interviewed the CEO of Polyphony Digital, Kazunori Yamauchi. He answers many questions in the two page article including a couple on when we can expect to see the PS3 racing sim.

As good as Prologue is, what can we expect in the full version of GT 5?
To be honest, I haven't given a lot of thought to GT 5, so I don't have an answer. And it's too early to talk about GT 5 because we still have updates coming out for Prologue.
Is there an ETA on GT 5?
It won't be this year and nothing's scheduled for next. It may be out in 2010, but like I said, we haven't really discussed it yet.
Does GT even matter anymore? I mean the graphics are gorgeous, but who cares if you're flying by everything Burnout style? Santa brought my son Motorstorm PR today, so I may have to check that out.
If they can release a game called Prologue which is the same game as GT5 but slimmed down, why is it taking so long to make? I think this game will never come out on PS3 and they are just fluffing about.

It takes awhile to make, render and optimize each car.
I hear 1 -2 days.
Also tracks take a long time, since I think they are getting them pinpoint accurate.
This interview was published almost a year ago, so I don't know why it's suddenly emerged as news on December 25th of the year. If you read this interview that was published only 2 months ago, you'll see things in a different light.

Thanks for the great link. Care to explain Emabulator?
Porsche (that’s right… Porsche) have stated that they do not have a problem with their cars being damaged in the game. Ferrari, however, are being more stubborn and could be a source of delay in damage implementation. Of course, that isn’t consistent with Forza or Ferrari Challenge, which has shown damage on the Italian cars for some time now.
I wonder why Ferrari wouldn't care about the pre-existing depictions of Ferrari car damage, yet wants to throw a fit about GT5's car damage? Since my name is TeeCakes, I offer that Ferrari understands that the Gran Turismo series is the real driving simulator game that enthusiasts around the world take seriously. Car nuts could probably not care less about damage in other imitation games (*scoff* Forza *cough*).

Even if they take 1 to 2 days per car, how many must they have finished by now? And I'm sure the tracks will look nice, but they probably aren't getting it down to the last pebble (since no-one would notice).
There's a scary possibility that they're pulling a Duke Nukem Forever -- where they keep trashing what they have and starting over. If you hear them boast "the prologue is nothing like the final product!", then you know you're in trouble.

Several sites had the story from import Tuner, which is not dated. That's why I used words like "may" and put a "?" in the headline.
The interview you're talking about (linked a few posts above) is dated October 2008 and Kazunori Yamauchi does not give a release date. All he says is it will be out much sooner than two years from the time of the interview.

-K.Y simply said its gonna be in GT5
- then i said GT5!!!! Ohh my God !! thats way to far from now.
- "he laughed" and said : why are you saying that ?
-Me: because of what i know is that the team still didn't think even of targeting a release date for GT5 and to be honest i dont believe GT5 will come before 2 years which is a long time/
-K.Y : "2 years hahaha, no no. dont worry much about that its gonna be sooner than expected"
- Me : any hint about when?
K.Y: he laughed again and said soon.
That does not clarify if the game is coming in 2009 or early 2010.
In a GameSpot interview from April he did not leave the impression GT5 is coming any time soon.

Talking about the two vaporware titles, Yamauchi confirmed they're both still on the radar. He said, "Gran Turismo for Boys will most likely become a service within Gran Turismo 5, and for the PSP I don't think we'll be able to make this year."
When asked what's next for the Gran Turismo following GT5 Prologue's European launch, Yamauchi said that, "first off, GT5 prologue is only at the halfway point to its completion. So in the next update there will be many more features added to the game. From that point to Gran Turismo 5, there's just going to be a lot more quantity in terms of cars and of the tracks as well."
GameSpot asked if the development of GT5 Prologue meant a longer wait for the eventual Gran Turismo 5, and Yamauchi answered, "This is true, but creating games on the PS3 is so much more difficult than we imagined at first and it took us three years to get here, and I hope our fans understand that we're trying our best and will be moving forward [on GT5] from here on."

This is all fine, but you headline was nothing more than poorly researched shock news. Doing the work after somebody says "huh?" won't get you far around here.

Give it a rest already. He explained to you what happened and that headline is by no means shocking.

Yamauchi has stated that it takes the equivalent of 6 months of time to create each car model.
Quote:
"In GT and GT2, both for PS1, a designer spent a day to model a car. In GT3 and GT4, for PS2, the same worker spent a month modeling the same car due to the increased amount of polygons. In GT5 for PS3, they require six months to do the same job," Yamauchi explained.

Ahahaha! Now that is funny. GT is without a doubt one of the worst racing sims on the market. Even compared to Forsza 2, its pretty lame, and when compared to the likes of GTR or something like iRacing, its downright pathetic. Really, why does anyone give a shit about GT anymore? Other than the graphics, they haven't improved a single thing since the first one. The physics suck, the sound SUCKS, the sensation of speed sucks, the AI sucks, it took them five iterations before they finally decided implemented damage (because you can't do damage without the pretty graphics!!!), and yet they have the balls to call their game the real driving simulator. Really, why does anyone even give a shit about GT anymore? Gee, I really hope they expand on that AWESOME b-spec mode in 5
