According to this press release on PRWeb, Blu-ray disc movies are hammering out record sales figures in Europe.
Quote:
Despite the gloomiest of financial forecasts, sales of Blu-ray disc movies are defying the odds and bucking the credit crunch - with record figures reported in the run up to Christmas. And it's not just films flying off the shelves, Blu-ray disc players are also following suit, with a strong upsurge in European sales that is expected to continue into the New Year. In fact, overall sales are predicted to more than triple in 2009, reaching 2.5million units Europe wide* (and that figure does not even include the millions of Playstation 3 consoles, with their in-built Blu-ray players, that will be sold over the next few months).
I believe its a known fact that europe is first to bat when it comes to knowing what's cool. The US usually wants to be like the europe eventually.
This is a wise man. We are super cool.
I've always contended that Sony including Bluray in the PS3 was a good idea. Heck, never mind the mass the thing is an awesome media centre. I just don't think they have been aggressive enough with the format this time around.
When DVD came out it was crazy. Ads all of a sudden promoted the XVD version to the high hills. They, the Bluray commitee, should have pushed for similar promotion. People would have bought the DVD version anyway.
Overall I don't think Sony has been aggressive enough this generation where Microsoft and Nintendo have really steppedup a gear. I love my PS3 but Sony needs to start busting heads if it wants to push forward
I highly doubt that report. In the big chains here Bluray disks are still in the dark corner in the back of most shops.
I agree, this is more of an advertisement. No one I know even owns an blu-ray player... and the prices of the movies are about double to triple of the dvds.
Regular DVD movies are anywhere from 9.98 to 23.98 at our local Wal-Mart, their Blu-Ray movies range from 19.98 to 27.98 (depending on their sales and if it is a collector's edition). Of coarse the old movies are going to be the cheap ones where you could say Grease is three times less on DVD than Transformers is on Blu-Ray.
Blu-Ray is the DVD of the future just as the DVD took the title from VHS, it is all about quality and storage capacity and with Panasonic coming out with that 400gb Blu-Ray disc that is backwards compatibility with existing Blu-Ray players and talk of a 1TB Blu-Ray disc by 2012 well that's a lot of storage and streaming isn't going to replace the need to store a lot of data (movies, photo's, music, etc) in the future.
But just like anything the initial price will cause a slow growth then as they find ways to make them cheaper and with a little time it will drop and we will be looking at some company who says "we can store movies on crystals and it is like real life" then someone will build in a crystal reader to a Xbox or Nintendo and everyone will complain crystals suck and Blu-Ray is cheaper, blah, blah, blah.... Anyone see a pattern?
I haven't bought a disc-based movie since I got Netflix. Sure, it's 1$ extra a month to get Blu-Ray discs but totally worth it.
