Time Magazine has published their "The Top 10 Everything of 2008" list. Among the many lists is their picks for the top ten video games. Their pick for number one was Rockstar's smash hit action game, Grand Theft Auto IV.
Quote:
It's ironic that GTA became a football in the debate over sex and violence in video games, because where it belongs is in the debate over whether video games count as art. No game developers are more radical and more passionate about the storytelling power of their medium than folks at Rockstar North, and GTA IV is the company's most ambitious work ever. It's the story of Niko Bellic, an Eastern European soldier-for-hire fighting his way up the organized crime ladder in an archly satirical version of New Yo— I mean, Liberty City. It's a grade-A shoot-'em-up that doubles as an interactive novel and triples as a sly critique of American consumer culture.
What is up with all of these lists coming in early December? There is still a month left to go in this year. I guess that is a lesson to publishers. Have your game come out prior to December to be considered for year end rewards.
meh, wrong, there plenty of games that were more fun than gta 4. gears 2, fallout 3 being the main candidates for me.
GTA 4 is basically a rehash of past games (good as it is), and so is Gears 2. GOTY should simply go to the best and/or creative game hands down. Not that Gears 2 or GTA weren't AWESOME games, but with games like MGS4 Dead Space and Fallout 3 in the mix this year, I don't think GTA or Gears should really win GOTY.
Nice list. Not sure on #8, though (Hunted Forever). I haven't played it myself, but watching the You Tube video they linked, it doesn't really seem to fit the company they've placed it amongst, which gives me the feeling they threw it in there just to look edgy. *shrug*

Yeah, I'm not sure about that either. I made a thread in the PC forum to discuss it specifically. Its free to play, and a flash game.

Yep, I'll still be playing 2008 games well into 2009. When oh when will the industry stop end loading the release calendar?

What's left to come out this year? My big-names have already been out for 2008, and the next one I'm looking forward to is Street Fighter IV.
Back on topic, GTA IV does deserve some rewards, but there have been more games out this year I'd pick for GOTY over it. Not saying those games deserve it, it's just personal preference.

I agree, but the Publisher's response seems to be that it's better to be the 15th best seller in November than it is to be number 1 in April. Not sure if that's true... but, it seems to be the rhetoric. That being said, both GTAIV and MGS4 came out in the "summer," and they did very well. Now, that being said, most franchises aren't quite at that level.
OT: It's not a bad list, much better than the garbage Rolling Stone puts out, and it's nice that Braid did so well - so... not bad, TIME.
