Edge Online has interviewed key members of the team behind Bioware's upcoming MMORPG, Star Wars: Old Republic. While it has some hints about character designs and narrative, they couldn't squeeze any information out of them about one of the most important aspects of the Star Wars universe, Space Combat.
Quote:
Unfortunately, the most interesting aspects of the game are the ones least is known about. Confirmed are realm vs realm, player vs player, raiding and space travel. Asking BioWare rewards us with a familiar line. “We are building many many worlds and you can travel between them, but what happens then we’re not talking about,” says Erickson. In-game economy? “We’ll have one.” Housing? “We’re definitely not talking about player housing”. The game may be being developed for 360, but “we’re only talking about PC today”. Best of all, the immortal “we’re not talking about anything to do with space today”.
Potential system seller or another Galaxies in the making? Always in motion is the future.
There is another comment in there that doesn't bode well for people hoping for decent lightsaber duels,
Quote:
In terms of movement, characters have the floaty-footed quality common to MMOGs, but the combat does seem to pack a little more of a wallop than usual. “It plays to the strengths of the medium a lot more. We’re proud of felt it wasn’t as action-packed as it could have been,” says James Ohlen, TOR’s creative designer. “This is a faster-paced system that focuses on making the player feel like a hero – four players all beating on one enemy; that’s not what you think of as heroic. It’s usually the heroes who are outnumbered, and that’s the kind of feeling we’re going for.”
Ugh.

I guess I don't get the "Ugh". They're trying something new in the genre. Granted their cavalier use of "heroic" "hero" etc is annoying at best, I am pretty confident BioWare will produce, not just a good SW game, but a good game in general, MMO or otherwise.

Both the idea that they are hiding space travel/space combat and the comment about the 'floaty feeling movement'. Those are not the kind of things you want to hear.
Honestly, what would it hurt to say, "We don't have space combat."
I know exactly what it would hurt, it would turn gamers away from the game the same way it did with Star Wars Galaxies... so they have to try to be as hush/hush as possible so that the bad news doesn't leak out.

Honestly, if the rest of the game is fun, polished, and there's plenty of content, the single facet of space combat *not* being present isn't going to turn me away from it because that's not how I'd be spending most of my time in game.
Now obviously, The Old Republic will be different from KOTOR because we're talking MMO vs. single-player RPG, but as I recall, there wasn't really anything you'd consider actual space combat in KOTOR, and it worked out just fine.

They may not know at this point if they have Space Combat or not for Launch. The game is probably at least 2 years out at best from launch. They're most likely working hard on everything else and just doing some testing for Space Combat. They may scrap it, they may push it off to a content update, they may delay it for an expansion down the road, or they may just get it into the initial release.
I have no doubt that they're going to work on it, but to come out and say one way or another at this point wouldn't be good business sense.
Maybe I am being a grump today, but the chances of Microsoft actually allowing a MMO on their system (FF XI doesn't count don't even get me started on all the reasons..) are akin to the chances of em winning the million dollar lottery.
MS has dropped the ball on this so many times now, and no I am not picking on them (shakeing an angry fist at level 5 here!) it just seems like no one will get a good MMO onto a console.

Exactly. Especially after what happened with SWG. People were excited. Then it ended up being an expansion you had to pay extra for. People not happy.
If they're still designing it, best to keep your mouth shut.
"Confirmed are realm vs realm, player vs player, raiding" = Oh Wee , another PVP based MMORPG. Lets count all those that worked out in the past. ah, what number comes after zero....... Why do devs keep trying this???
