You know that little sandbox mod for Half Life 2 called Garry's Mod? Welp, thanks to that little gem, the real Garry behind it (Garry Newman), has managed to bank three MILLION dollars. Well, that's $3m in sales, not necessarily banked. Big Download has that story:
Quote:
Since each copy of Garry's Mod sells online for $9.99 that means the game has generated over $3 million in revenue since it became a commercial product. That's pretty impressive for a game that has gotten little publicity outside the game community. Newman thanks both Valve and Team Garry for their work on on Garry's Mod in his blog post, adding, "And it's my hope that it has inspired other people to do stuff. I mean, I'm a fool like you, I've just got more experience in pretending I'm not, and I did it.. So why can't you."
Nice work Mr. Newman! Who here is part of that tally?
Someone talked me into getting Garry's Mod earlier this year, and I'm glad I did. Getting together with friends to see what kind of crazy stuff you can do with the mod can be VERY entertaining.
I bought it and basically never played it. I'm stupid like that. I'm a little annoyed at how his mod went retail, while so many more deserving mods should have by now. I mean Garry's Mod has practically no new maps, models, or textures. It's just some GUI objects and a lot of tweaks to the basic HL2 functionality. Practically any successful mod out there does that, and far more, by default.
Still, good for him, but let's not pretend he deserves all that, even after what Valve takes out for Steam distribution.
Garry's Mod is alright, it was pretty cool for it's time. The Crysis Editor makes it look like a joke. Basically it added some shit that should have been in the Half Life toolset anyways.
