Blizzard “worried” About Possible Swamping of Diablo III Co-op
Quote:
Speaking to IGN at BlizzCon, Blizzard boss Rob Pardo’s said the final number of players to be allowed in a Diablo III co-op party has yet to be decided, and that the team is “worried” that too many cooks may spoil the broth.
“We’re a little bit worried that if you go up to too many players that you’re not really going to be playing together anymore,” he said.
“We want to make sure it’s a great co-op experience where you really play with the people you’re with, so we’ve just got to experiment and figure out what the optimal number is.”
The game was shown playable with up to four players at BlizzCon, although Pardo said the dev team is currently targeting an upper limit of eight.
There’s a full interview through there.

I'd say their worries are justified with this one.....
I've been playing diablo II for many, many years and I've grown accustomed to the 8 person party. Admittedly it just shows off the imbalances that exist in diablo II these days, but I think that lowering that number would just kind of suck all around.
Espicially when Sacred 2 is apparently supporting 16 player games.
This is their convenient excuse for the next step of saying they are not doing 8 player anymore.
They do sorta have a point, with a game like diablo there isn't much wiggle room for making the AI smarter so to combat large groups of players they can really only...
Make the monsters hit like trucks(this'll mean you'll need a dedicated healing class)
Make the players fight hundreds of monsters at once(not bad but it'd mean any class with AoE would rule and anyone that was running near the minimum specs would have their computer explode)
Give the monsters millions of health points so they take ages to kill
in D2 we usually broke up into 2 man teams, to wrack up the kills. We could have 2 teams going separately and clear a chapter quickly. You haveto balance Necro/Pally Sorc/Amazon kind of thing. but it worked so 4 is no issue for some gamers.
I don't really mind what limit they put on the party size, I'm sure they'll make a good judgment. But I would think they'd want at least five, so you could have one of each class
Whenever I was in an 8 player party - even while playing with friends - all we were doing was having the designated Sorc port through each zone to the boss at which point he'd drop a TP. Then we'd just go in and mow everything down in an uncontrolled hail of spell effects, it wasn't anything really interesting or "Tactical", there was no need to split up into "teams," and most of the time the other 4 people were random addons anyway just to max xp/hour.
I think 4 is a really really solid spot to aim for - especially with the way the combat's been changed. It makes everyone matter more which in turn leads to everyone being more "in" to the game. :T

16-player co-op just sounds like a douchebag parade waiting to happen. It seems like 4-6 is about as much as can really be held together in any sort of cohesive unit.
I too want less people.
It is far cooler to actually be forced to work together instead of just spamming spells/abilities with no real risk of dying. 8 is just too much and with 4 it is already beginning to get cramped.
