We want to keep everything as true to original as possible though still making it more dynamic and more interesting. That means we will introduce some new aliens and equipment though do not fear, we do not wish to lose the whole X-Com spirit which we are trying to achieve so anything new which will come will be rather subtle and will be there to make the game feel new.
The interview comprises over 30 questions covering a range of topics with answers from five of the team members and is accompanied by exclusive media including a rough draft of the intro movie, some new and re-worked music and sound effects from the game, as well as a whole slew of concept artwork and interfaces which are sure to stir the memories of X-COM fans out there.
I'm starting to think that fans are the only people who can make a true X-Com sequel/game, as they won't feel the need to ruin the game by putting their own personal stamp on it, hopefully.
This is one of those games that really only needs a reskin for "next gen", imho. The gameplay was solid, perhaps could use a bit more depth nowadays, but layered on top of the solid base it has, not as changes.
X-Com wasn't perfect. It was just damn interesting at the time. The game could definitely use better controls and UI (treating men like bombs always annoyed me - among other things). Also, the combat was really slow at times. I would fudge some of the sight rules and just assume that highly trained soldiers have a fucking neck too (same for the aliens). Finally, I'd be more lenient about killing team members. I always used a few "red shirts" to scout and their deaths were never a big deal, but losing core team members to lucky shots or to grenades and having to load up an old save was really annoying. . . especially in later levels when every little gray man is willing to kill himself and his entire crew as long as he takes out one of your guys at the same time with a huge rocket.
Leveling up based on alien kills can get annoying too. I want them to get something for just being on the mission. Not everyone is there because they are a crackshot. Having to go out of your way to get kills for a psi-officer is annoying.
On the other hand, losing your core team members to happenstance and bad luck happens in the real world, and that kind of frustration and a "on with the mission" uncaring kind of attitude were part of the whole X-Com experience.
Trained commandos as just part of the mission payload seems uncaring, but you get out of the game what you put into it. I've always thought frustration and accomplishment were two major key elements in a good video game. Without the lows, the highs don't mean as much.

Looks like a spot of something good, I cant wait to try it out. Now if someone would give the same attention to Master of Orion and add some net code my life would be complete.

Love this series. I agree with both Random's and Bean's comments. This could be redone and done better. I loved the research aspect, but god damn was it hard as hell.
You can get UFO: Extraterrestrials on GamersGate for $16.99, which when modded, I've heard is strikingly similar to the old X-COM games. I'm playing it now and having an enjoyable time of it. Get Bmans Ease of Use mod since it's basically a conglomerate of the best mods the community produced.
I will keep an eye on this other game as well, since this a theme I don't think will ever grow old on me.

Dude you are so right it hurts. Honestly, how hard is it to make a top down 3\4 view turn based strategy game? I mean shit, Square has done it for years. All someone needs to do is take what made the original great, convert it to glorious 3D graphics and viola! A new X-com game!
I'd play the old one, but it sucks to play the version that runs in windows XP since parts of the screen are cut off.
I've sorta lost hope of ever seeing a true UFO sequel that's just as fun as the original, yet updated for today's times.
I'm more or less convinced that you simply cannot change the combat into any kind of a real time battle without changing the core fundamentals of what makes XCom... well... XCom.
There's been many "spirital sequels" already but none of them really matched expectations.
Has noone here played http://ufoai.sourceforge.net/ ? UFO remake done in the Quake2 engine. Very well done. I enjoyed the hell out of it. It also has online MP
I do have to admit I like the look of Cydonia though. But when I looked through the screenshots etc, it looks like they have very little to show as of yet; some concept art and a few game model renders. I think their interview is more of a recruitment thing than a 'hey, we really have a game shaping up here' announcement.
What strikes me is that it's not piracy which is lowering brick and mortar sales: it's great fan made games and other mods.
