Nintendo DS gets DLC

Noticed this over on Metropolis, looks like the DS is getting downloadable content. If you live in Japan that is.

Quote:
From March, the DS gets its very own movie download service called DSvision—the result of a collaboration between Nintendo, print firm DNP and am3, a digital media distributor. All that’s needed to start using the service is a ¥3,890 kit consisting of a USB dongle for a PC, a 512MB microSD card, and an adapter for slotting the card into the DS Lite’s game port.
Official Site: http://www.dsvision.jp/

No word on specific content, but from the site it appears there will be downloadable books, movies, music and comics. There also seems to be a remark about software development for developers on the official site (i.e. downloadable games).

Too bad we'll probably never see this internationally.

Maybe no international release but given the existence of importing and homebrew is it possible that the hackers have the ability to make this possible in the US?

Not unless you feel like ssh/port forwarding from a Japanese IP address, and have a paid account with these providers.

Now if you're just asking about video/e-books/etc, that's already been on the DS for a long time from the homebrew/modding scene.

So it's effectively an officially endorsed version of the R4?

Yup. Guess they realized all the sales they could be having.

Sounds like it... Anyhow, it's easy enough to do this in America with movies you own (or at least, have); no big deal.

This means there will be a DS movie "scene" any time now. If they keep it in Japan, though, this wont happen.

So far, this is only for music and movies, right? Is it supposed to only allow for playing purchased content, or does it allow you to use your own?

From what I can read, it's only for paid content.

Well boo to that then. I'll stick with my PSP if I need to watch movies or listen to music on my portable game system.

Chances of this coming to Canada considering we just got Movies on XBLMP(Xbox Live Live Marketplace), and 10 shows on the Canadian iTunes Video Store. DS video coming to Canada 2010,it would seem. Until then I would have to agree with Gorvi the PSP is got to be the choice if you want a "Portable Multimedia System" DS like the Wii is about the games. For now.

Although for my Money why not just pack an iPod with you DS? Relativly the same screen size as DS.

Anymention of which CODEC they are using?

No man, it ain't coming to Canada. XBL content took years to do so (from a North American company), and this DS service will doubtfully ever make it out of Japan. Just like the NES floppy drive, the SNES "St GIGA" satellite system or the N64 DD. Don't delude yourself.

Meh, we don't even have any form of Xbox Live in Brazil, even though the 360 has been released here for more then an year. You guys are doing fine.
