According to a post by Mark Rein on Epic's official forums, the PC application to "cook" UT3 mods so that they'll be PS3 compatible should be available next week.

We're very close to releasing an update to the Unreal Engine 3 editor, that comes with the PC version of UT3, that will allow UT3 mod-makers to cook their mods into the required PS3 format. We've been doing some internal testing and we're hoping to expand to a wider group tomorrow or Friday. If all goes well then we should see the update released next week which is what I expect will happen. Obviously the process works, as we put out a few mods before Christmas and people seem to be playing them, but it is the update to the editor that we're testing.
It should be very interesting to see some of the content that comes from all of this.
Forge and UT style mods are in completely different ballparks. They both have their place. I have no doubt there will be some awesome mods that will make this a kickass feature based on what I've seen with UT2004.
Call me crazy but Forge mode seems better to me than this mod process you need to go through.
It's not as powerful as a mod obviously, but it is entirely in-game, and can be done while playing.
I'll call you uninformed.
UnrealEd is what they use to make the games. It's the same tool Epic used to make Gears of War and UT3. This is the tool you use to build original maps, not move around pre-made assets with your buddies.
I think Half Life 2 proved the era of great mod gaming (Jailbreak, TF, CS, 3 Wave CTF, etc.) is pretty much over. I like UT3 oodles and oodles, but I don't think it will have a smash hit like Half Life, Quake, Quake 2 and Quake 3 did.

I don't consider Forge a "mod maker" its more a free play compared to the long development PC mods. Thats the way i see it.

I doubt there will be anything interesting. Considering the minuscule PC sales and the general meh UT3 community reaction. Won't be anything more than a bunch of maps and mutators. Probably a few mods that get started but never finished.

(prove me wrong please )
I'm sure it's easy to get that viewpoint when you play lots of console games.
Mod making is alive and well. It just takes longer to make a quality mod these days with the level of detail in modern engines.
I agree with you about UT3, but mod making in general is going to be just fine.

A few people with some passion and who want to make a name for themselves can go a long way. I'd bet a lot of people would want to be the first out there to make the first huge mod for the PS3 version of UT3. Hell, that'd be a good way to get noticed and maybe land a job for someone ambitious enough.

I play lots of pc games =/. I just beat Crysis, Half Life 2 episode 1, I'm almost done with portal and Guitar Hero 3 pc as well...
I was on Team Reaction back in the Quake 2 days, helped with the sound effects in Tremulous and Jailbreak for Half Life. I just don't see the same smash hits in the mod community anymore.
It's just my opinion, it's certainly not fact. But when sites like planetquake and bluesnews had the pull, mods seemed much more in the limelight (as well as their popularity)
Mod-making is alive and well. What isn't is the TC, and honestly, the TC that sees a production release has always been a rare bird.
There was a relatively simple mod back in the day called Holy War. I am toying with the idea of recreating that mod, or one similar to it on either Source or Unreal.
I think mods will slowly begin to play a smaller part in our gaming lives as time goes by.
Games are more expensive to develop, and that means more work if you're doing a free mod. If you don't up the level of quality, the mod will look dated before it's even released.
That means more and more mods will fail mid-development, or people just won't bother doing them because it's a lot harder to develop.
Or maybe it's just me. I didn't bother with any BF2 mods (they don't seem to be so different than BF2, unlike BF1942 and the desert combat mod), half-life 2 (between cs: source, dod: source and now TF2, why bother with mods that have very few servers and players?) etc. I don't think I ever played a UT mod at all. I tried that red october thing, but preferred dod:s' style of gameplay.
And hey, you have to use a memory card to play a UT3 mod on the PS3? What the hell? why can't you just download it to the HD? If I had a PS3, I wouldn't buy UT3. If someone gave UT3 to me, I wouldn't bother trying out the mods.

My point above is that when the mod process requires a PC and a data transfer device, it presents a barrier that most people will not cross except die hard fans.
If a server is playing an unknown map, and I try and connect, does UT simply downlaod it? From what I can tell that is a no?
Compare this to Forge which is by nature immediately playable, yet highly customizable.
Not shitty ones, produced by no-talent hacks (as most people who mod really are, barring the obvious exceptions). There aren't enough people in the UT III community right now to produce much in the way of gold in the midst of the dreck.

Lost cause.
...Then don't download the shitty ones. You could start out with the 4 free maps Epic endorsed. Who cares about the piles of dreck when you're still getting more quality for free than others.
