New Mario Kart Wii Gameplay Footage

Nintendo held their Fall press conference today and among the reveals - the first real gameplay footage from Mario Kart Wii.

Some information gleaned from the video:
  • No more partners, a la Double Dash
  • Graphics look like you'd expect - clean, bright and smooth.
  • It looks like stunts are a part of the game. Mario flies over the top of a quarter pipe, does a flip, and gets a turbo boost when he lands. Item boxes are also placed in the jump zone.
  • Motorcycles are, as previously reported, in the game. Mario does some wheelies and power turns. No indication how they differ from the standard karts.
No weapons, new or old, were shown in the trailer.

Thanks to Maxconsole.

It is as I feared: They have instilled wii-remote movement into the core of the game. Likely this will mean that the person who wins the race is the one that waves his remote around like a jackass. Not to mention removing the two player on one kart feature that made double dash so much fun

What I HOPE they do is feature a slew of different controller options a la Smash Bros and have a double-kart option.

Actually no weapons were used in this trailer but technically you can see the classic weapons spin by as Mario hits a ? Block. At one point he is holding Triple Bananas. So no, nothing new but a few oldies can be confirmed.

2 things: waving the controller around like a jackass will most likely accomplish nothing other than running you into a wall and making you look like a jackass, as tilt-based steering would require an overhaul of the powerslide turbo system and probably the end of snaking. Also, the two player on one kart system was fairly crap compared to the other games in the series and really wouldn't work for online multiplayer on a system that lacks voice chat. Don't worry, your fears are unfounded because you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

I think its a bit to early to call on the controller scheme at this point. Myself I think it could be quite good with the pointing used to aim green shells like metroid etc.

Removing the co-op kart racing was fine, as it was a good idea, but never really implemented well. The driver did all the work, and using powerups should be tied to driving tactics. Separating the two roles didn't make sense, and wasn't equally fun.

Hey over at Jeux-France they have some new screens too. The last one looks very much like a recreation of sherbert land from the N64 (another classic cup in this version?)

Yes and no. The gunner had another important gameplay function, corrections and obstacle dodging. Since you could hit L & R to dodge left and right, this became critical if the driver didn't see a shell/banana peel/oil slick/etc. On the other hand, if you and the driver dodge it can really screw you over.

Furthermore, a quick dodge at the right time can bring the kart under control if you're flailing out of control.

While the option to play co-op isn't incredibly deep, it does provide you with a challenge to work as a team and think in sync. My roommate and I used to play DD quite a bit co-op and there were a few epic moves made possible only by teamwork. Such as power sliding around the flame turrets in bowsers castle and using the dodge to slip between the individual flames.

Good times.

This looks like it's going in a much better direction than DD. I never thought I'd say it about a Mario Kart game, but i hated DD. The DS game reminded me at least that they still know how to make a good kart racer, though, so I'm hopeful about this one. Has it been announced if you can use the classic controller and/or Wavebird with this?

Most of them looked like classic tracks, to me. I did see a couple of new ones, though. Also, I hope they tighten up the graphics, because, as it stands, the arcade game looks way better. The arcade game is amazing, by the way. Just thought I would throw that out there.

That statement makes it sound like there were no weapons present. They were, we just didn't see any used. We only saw the player hitting a "? box" and it go into the selection stage.

On another note, I love the whole "trick-out" then boost idea in Sonic Rush, and this seems like another useful implementation of that kind of system.

Well my goodness, I missed him the first time, but you're right!

I have fond memories of Mario Kart. My roommate back in 97 often had a few friends over and they would play Mario Kart 64 until the wee hours of the morning while I was trying to sleep down the hall (and had to get up at 5am). All I had to do was open my bedroom door and I'd hear, "Shhhhh..." and they would quiet down. I had a love/hate relationship with that game. Mostly love though when I wasn't trying to sleep.

I'm no concerned about the controls - Excite Truck & TH:Downhill Jam controlled very accurately with wiimote tilting. I didn't care for MK:DD, though. It felt like it was overly weapon-heavy, the tracks felt claustrophobic, and imho the camera was pulled in a bit too close making it hard to see the upcoming track and your enemies. While I love the series and I'm absolutely buying this (even the worst Mario Kart is still a good game), I hope they address some of these. MK:DS definitely gives me hope.

I know its wii so you don't expect good graphics but even so this game simply doesn't look that good. I think the deciding factor will be with the controls. If the controls are simple to use then this game will be a big hit. But if the controls make the game too difficult to play then this Mario kart will take the cake as the worst Mario kart ever.

I know excite truck had pretty good controls. It still doesn't stop me from fearing that the controls could still ruin the game.

You really can't fairly judge the quality of the game graphics from that poor video quality. If you've seen a video with better quality you based your opinion on please share it
