Rock Band 3 May Teach You to Play for Reals

Rock Band 3 hasn't been officially announced yet, but 1Up has a story from a website called Plastic Axe. In it, they link to both the Boston Herald and Chicago Tribune (yeah, there are 4 sources total here), where George Harrison's son Dhani claims Rock Band 3 will be more real so people will actually be able to learn how to play.

Quote:

"I'm working on Rock Band 3' and making the controllers more real so people can actually learn how to play music while playing the game," Harrison said.

"Give me a couple years, it's going to happen."
Not sure this is what people are looking for, but hey... it's progression right?

If these Guitar games actually taught you how to play music I would actually play them.

So basically, we'll have to get a brand new set of instruments again? And this sounds like a fundamental game engine change that could break backwards compatibility. In which case, so much for the whole RB platform thing.

The only way to make it work with the older tracks/DLC would be for the next game to support the old playstyle as well as whatever new gameplay they're implementing. This would mean you couldn't play the older tracks at all with the new gameplay/controllers unless they patch all of them somehow.

Sounds cool to me.

Should have support for a real guitar plugged in by the amp cord or something like that :P

Heh, about time. I've got way too many idiot friends that think they know how to play guitar because they can hit 4 buttons in sync.

It's absolultely what I'm looking for. Frankly I'd be happy if it was an exapanded version of Apple's Garage Band lessons...

If I wanted to play a guitar I would play a guitar. I like the arcade aspect just as I prefer Burnout paradise to racing sims.

I would probably play these games if I were learning how to play real music in the process. At least my hours of playing MMOs have taught me to understand how to properly grind when I am at work. =P

- Lol? Are you saying that the future of work involves your boss awarding you experience points for work done??? :O

Most of the playerbase can't play fake guitar on expert. Having to support the old style kinda goes without saying.

My guess, since tabs are a separate product the labels are used to selling for a premium, is that any advancing of fake-rock to approach real guitar training would be on a limited basis. That is: only a subset of the included songs would be playable that way and only a subset of the DLC.

IMO the future of Rock Band \ GH means including playalong track data in future album releases of major titles. Added value to justify higher sales price. May also include multi-tracks rather than a premixed track you can't change. That would also allow you to karaoke any track, be it voice or guitar.
