Sony Announces PS Vita TV

Polygon (among others) revealed today that Sony has announced the PS Vita TV: A small mini-console that can stream your Vita games as well as online content to your TV. You control it with the Dualshock 3.

Quote:

It will let users enjoy video and music services on their television, including Hulu, Music Unlimited and Nico Nico. It will also play some 1,300 software titles released for the PS Vita, PSP and the original PlayStation.
Doesn't really seem that much different from Roku/Apple TV/that new Google dongle. Handheld games on the big screen will probably look like crap too.

Is this a joke? This must be a joke. Is this a joke?

ashikenshin 09-09-2013 07:34 AM

nice! I want one

Jhooud 09-09-2013 07:35 AM

So wait. How does that work with the touch screen controls? Do you have to use both the dual shock and the Vita?

oldjadedgamer 09-09-2013 07:35 AM

So I don't need a Vita to play Vita games? Awesome. Was Divx support added and SD memory?

Games that require the touch screen outside of menus are not supported.

At $100, I'll take one. of course - why don't they just add this ability to the PS4 or PS3?

Nope. It'll also Remote Play PS4 games, making it easy to expand the PS4 out to additional rooms in your home.

Because its not a streaming device. Its all the Vita hardware, just without a screen or controller. So, to add it to the PS4 would require them to add all of the Vita hardware to the PS4, thus increasing the cost of the PS4 (same as if they added Hardware backward compatibility for the PS3).

In this video they state it can remote play PS4 games (PS4 required of course) here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rG5l78gbvpU

That sounds somewhat interesting if the price is right ($150 or less).

The PS4 is significantly more powerful. I doubt they need to add vita hardware to the system to play PSP or Vita games.

I don't see why they couldn't add similar PSP and PSVita game functionality while in emulated hardware.

Fucking awesome. This is something I will buy.

Well, bummer. Though I don't know how many Vita games require the touchscreen as opposed to include it as an option. Le shrug.

PS4 Project Shield? Meh. I can carry the system to another room, y'know.

Why? The controller has a touch pad.

Terran 09-09-2013 08:04 AM

Insta-fail. Too expensive for people who want a device just to stream content to their display/tv (other such devices are much cheaper), and playing a handheld game on your 50" set is going to look like complete arse.

Niche product without mass-market penetration possibilities. Moving along...

Vita TV uses the Dualshock 3. So no touch.

One interesting thing I read after submitting this article though, is with internet capability on both ends, apparently you can stream your PS4 games to a Vita for remote play anywhere.

I missed the announcement that the DS3 was a new model with a touch screen. Link?

Sony is on fire lately. A tiny PS1/PSP player with Vita compatibility. Any additional media functionality will be a nice bonus.

SaintBlitzkrieg 09-09-2013 09:00 AM

So, you want me to buy a Vita where I can already play a game on, but then you want me to buy this so I can play it on the big screen...

I would rather you, Sony, make Vita games, downloadable on your consoles, so I can instead buy there to play on the big screen then having to buy this thing. Just seems odd to me.

Yup. I would gladly buy some vita games for my PS3 or PS4. I would definitely buy some PSP games for big screen play that were out back in the day.
