State of Decay Multiplayer DLC Cancelled

IGN reports that Undead Labs has decided to cancel their planned multiplayer DLC for State of Decay.

Quote:

Undead Labs' Jeff Strain has confirmed that co-op will not come to State of Decay. However, "I can say definitively that co-op multiplayer will be the absolute heart of any future State of Decay games."

He explains, " It's not simply a matter of adding the technology, but also redesigning core game systems to support multiple players, and then adding new content designed for people to play together. It's easy to imagine how all that would come together as many have said, the game is practically begging for it but retrofitting the game to add that experience would take the rest of this year, and well into the next. Worse, it would preclude our ability to offer any other kind of support for the game, including Title Updates and DLC."

Boo! Way to let the fan base down. This is a game built for co-op. SHAME. I really think they saw how well they've done so far, and they realize that co-op is a huge endeavor, so they'll just put it in the next full release. Sort of shady, but disappointing more than anything.

I have no idea what/if they promised something here, but this is basically why I seldom buy in advance. Rather, wait for the game to be here, if it really is as good as I hope and having the features I want -> buy.

They never promised it. Cross out "planned" in the headlines and put in "hoped for" multiplayer.

It was something they wanted to do, and something they had originally designed the game for. But at some point, they realized that they couldn't do it and release the game in a reasonable time-frame. So they axed it.
I'm not gonna pretend that I'm not disappointed, but I LOVE the game as it is.
Looking forward to the sequel.

AKA: We realised we can make a buttload more money if we make State of Decay 2 and put the MP in that.

Studios canceling $DLC are no different than studios who don't deliver through kickstarter. Ostracise them.

If you enjoy co-op but it should have had some form of multiplayer pvp from the start. Personally I don't see a point to a zombie survival game unless you also have to defend yourself potentially against other human players and not just computer a.i.

No, just no. ie, The Last of Us.

Only a tiny percentage of players want to play against griefers. Most people want co-op gameplay in a game of this type. The last thing you want to do is scrounge up a bunch of supplies and have some random douchebag come along and kill you and take everything.

One could argue Last of Us was more of a cinematic movie game rather than a "game", i.e. Hard Rain. You can watch all the cinematic's back to back on youtube, it adds up to about 3 hours worth of footage and syncs nicely together like a movie. Plus there's just the one ending, you don't get any choice how it ends.

Tell that to about 70% of the Dayz community.

Good, maybe they will hurry up with the PC version now! :)

I played both and they're worlds apart.

I got my money's worth out of this game. I'll finish it if/when it ever comes to the PC. I play games to be the loner/vigilante type character so, I like playing alone.

Nilych 07-04-2013 07:02 AM

Here's hoping they hop-to on the PC version then.

The lack of multiplayer doesn't surprise me though - State of Decay was originally called Class 3 and was mostly just a way to fund Class 4, which was planned to be a MMO. Though as I understand it, that is currently on hold while they negotiate with Microsoft.

This was my response.

Thin_J 07-04-2013 10:48 AM

Multi was the only way they could have gotten me to buy this.

That's what I'm hoping for.

Bottom line, developer can't code, which one look at the shitty graphics and performance of this game told me right away. They only got on XBLA because they're in Microsoft's backyard.

If by "one" you mean "a fool", then yes.

Also, I even enjoy the Multiplayer in Last of Us. I just wish I didn't have to grind for the Trophies.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say, you just summed it up better.
