In-Depth review of the Oculus Rift...

ERMAGERHD!

VenomUSMC 04-09-2013 07:13 PM

This would be cool for ARMA 3.

sai tyrus 04-09-2013 07:26 PM

Indeed. Or anything!

bean19 04-09-2013 07:45 PM

Couldn't watch it all - got bored too fast as they don't get to the info quickly enough. Is there a tightened up version?

sai tyrus 04-09-2013 07:46 PM

Just skip ahead. It's what I did!

It seems like it would work a lot better than TrackIR, but one downside I can see (especially with ArmA 3 and its large number of key commands) is not being able to glance at your keyboard.

What I think would be awesome is if Oculus Rift could be used in conjunction with a motion controlled game like Clang:

When does the genitalia attachment ship?

ElektroDragon 04-09-2013 10:07 PM

I think I'm even less interested in this than Kinect.

ElektroDragon 04-09-2013 10:09 PM

I watched the video. Seems like a great way to get me to puke my guts out in 10 minutes.

Psshsheit. This looks to be VR (finally) are you are acting like this? I want to play lotro on this so bad.

As for the keyboard problem. You could just have a front facing camera at eye location, have that signal piped in and a translucent over lay or at the bottom area of the FOV/viewing area or whatever. Just map a mouse click to pull it up. And it would good for seeing someone who comes in the room. DOOOOPE!

Hope they bring one to PaxAus so i can give it a go... like the idea but wanna see the execution

Looking at the blokes face in the story pic it already has ;P.

The problem with all these VR devices is that they focus on twitch based FPS games where reaction is critical. I would much rather see this used in a roller coaster simulator or some slower paced adventure game where I can look around without having to aim at something.

I think that's what they say in the video... once games are specifically written
for it then it will be much improved. Retro fitting games will always essentially
be tech demos imo.

Sounds like sorting out the controls is a major hurdle but ultimately with time
and enough flexibility in control setups something will work out wrt FPS games..

Only issue is most bigger dev houses are multi platform so wont invest much
in supporting it.. just ask Nintendo about the Wii and WiiU how unique interfaces
harms 3rd party support.

Man... my typing teacher Mrs Biddle would have had your ass for looking at the keyboard whilst keyboarding. I remember her making me stare into her eyes so that I wouldn't glance down.

I later worked with her when I got hired on at State Farm (before I quit due to a much longer story) & realized she was a lot of fun & loved to mess with the kids in her classes. She passed away a few years after that...

Don't look at the keyboard. A ghostly Biddle may appear.

I've been waiting for this tech to finally become worthwhile. Are we there yet?

And while you are at there ask them about the Wii and how it sold with its unique interface.:)

Affix a webcam pointed at your keyboard and overlay that with some transparency atop your game. Good times?
