Microsoft set to unveil something 'MAJOR' on Monday
 

Mashable.com just received an invite to another Microsoft Press Conference in LA and it is said to be some 'Major' announcement.

Could it be the next Xbox?

Could they be following the footsteps of Apple with keeping a tight lip on everything and then just coming out of the closet with a bang?

I would guess the new version of Windows. They won't announce the new Xbox for the same reason they didn't announce it at E3 -- they don't want to lose sales before the Holiday.

Look for an announcement of the new Xbox in Q1 of next year.

There have been a few guesses tossed around...

1. Some big news about Windows 8
2. New Microsoft Tablet (see: windows8)
3. Microsoft acquires Yammer

I would hope it is none of these.

Windows 8 has been beat around the block so much that I dont think it is that. We know so much about it that holding a major press conference seems almost pointless.

The tablet I could see.

An acquisition of a new company/product I could see as well.

But why would you call a press conference for something you could easily announce on a press release. Seems kind of fishy.

Do I think it is a new console. No, I dont, I agree with EvAv. I dont think it would hurt this holiday sales as much as it would hurt the next years. I plan on buying the games I planned on buying with or without that console announcement. So we shall see. I am kind of excited, I hope they dont let us down.

I think it is a tablet event. Probably hands on for the press with this one.

Since it is unknown until observed, the announcement is both a disappointment and a amazement. And no, the fact that Microsoft knows does not collapse the probability wave--they're not really human and you know it.

The word I heard is that they'll be showing off the WindowsRT OS which is designed for ARM-based tablets. Nothing interesting, in other words.

Quantum Physics suggests that this event is currently both an announcement of the release of the third Xbox, and a Windows 8 tablet event. Also...an ice cream social.

Ah the rumors the rumors. I love it.

I wish that was true...but they would have announced it at E3. I think it will be the win8 tablet, something that most won't care about.

Or seeing that their press conference was first, they didn't want to reveal anything and wanted to wait and see what Sony did. Seeing they didn't do anything, maybe they think they can get a head start again in the next gen. Sometimes, its a chess game in business when you have competition.

My bet is on Windows Phone 8 that was not shown that much ... may be tablet.

Office 15 is supposed to hit (Consumer preview) sometime now?

I can imagine zero things that they could announce that would be worth caring about.

New ways to bring us more amazing up to date advertisements or some such nonsense.

Windows Phone 8 hasn't been shown at all (except behind closed doors). June 20th there is a Windows Phone developer conference -- where it is rumored they will be talking Windows Phone 8. So I could see Windows Phone 8 unveiled for Consumers on Monday and then the developer details on Wednesday.

You assume, I meant something along the lines of the competition between the companies, I didn't. Apple's business model is stellar and hard to ignore, everything they drop is successful and they know when to cut their loses, know when to announce. Apple executes and makes you want to buy it. No reason why someone cant adopt that themselves. Its not because of Apples success and microsofts failures, its because of HOW Apple is successful.

Lets take an example here like dropping the next console. Why would you announce it at something everyone would expect like E3. People expect that. Instead, you tell them a few days later. You build your own hype, you announce when the competition can't announce anything, when you have the whole market at your disposal. That is what I would do.

Sony could easily have covered their asses. Stole the show to by showing a shell. Its a poker game between these two companies. Best way to win, is when they least expect it. If this is a new conference about their console launch or related items, its pure freaking genius.

Sometimes, its ok to think outside of the box to gain the most inspiration and also, attention.

And yeah, no console announcement because exactly what EvAv stated. Would just be a poor business decision to announce it now before the holiday season.

Watch it be Kinect for the PC or something.

DirectX is being rebranded as DirectY and released (literally liberated, after 17 years of being Windows exclusive) as a multiplatform API which will be managed by a rotating-chair consortium. This will make multiplatform development a lot easier for developers. There is also a product being unveiled, which I know nothing about. ;-) Cheers!
