And in doing so prevents Electronic Arts' NFS: MW from setting a record.
Thanks to Gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com) for the news (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=8235).
Electronic Arts’ hopes for Need for Speed: Most Wanted to become the longest-serving number one in the UK ever have been dashed by the unexpected success of Fumito Ueda’s Shadow of the Colossus.
In a market not known for its tolerance of more artistic titles, the game has entered straight in at number one. The budget price re-release of Ueda’s ICO has also entered at number twenty-three in the charts, and may well see the game performing better on its re-release than during its initial debut in 2002.
There is hope...

Nooooooo!!! Shadow of the Collossus is number 1? Why? All your doing is wandering around killing monsters, whats so good about that
I'm joking guys. I wish I had a PS2 so I could play this. I watched some trailers for it and I was blown away. I wanted to play it soo much.
I haven't even played the game but everyone here loves it so much it sounds as though it deserves the top spot :)

I see this akin to the rebels blowing up the Death Star at the end of Ep.IV. A great victory, EA will come back with something evil but, in the end, they will be blown up again. Death to the Empire! :)
On the other hand, there were a lot of UK-ers in SW (most of 'em died but hell they were there!) so I'm sure there's some sort of connection. Either that or it's just too early in the morning.

It's refreshing to see an original ip (and even more shocking and original IDEA) get some top spot respect. That game's awsome, three cheers.

I played the game but didn't hold my interest for long. The framerates was just annoying.

This is great, but what's sad is that NFS: MW was on top of the charts to begin with.
Goddamn EuroPEONs.

Next time I hear someone bitching about the GTA franchise ruining an entire generation of US kids I'll just respond "At least we're not as bad as those blood thirsty Euros."

Yeah, cause the Goddamn EUROPEAN market makes up such a HUGE chunk of EA's sales figures. It's not even talking about the whole of Europe, it's just the UK!

I hope you know that I was kidding. Well, at least about the "goddamn euroPEONs part".

Didn't the UK release of SotC get some sort of special extras, like some unlockable making-of videos and stuff? I'd almost buy the game again if I could get those extras in the US.

It did indeed get some extra stuff. I have it on good authority that the US Greatest Hits version of SotC will have the additional content added when it's released (think Virtua Fighter 4 and Midnight Club 3 on Greatest Hits). It's still a ways away, though.

Can we get a budget version of Red Faction out the same day. They are essentially the same game.

No, I think Red Faction has more desctructable environments. And Black has less spacesuits.

A PC exclusive strategy (non-FPS) title sits on the #2 spot.
Something to ponder about for the "PC is d00m3d" crowd.

I thought they cleared up that problem quite well with the spiffy motion blur... I mean it's not like your eyes can tell the difference unless it drops to REALLY low rates in this scenario. For me it just gave it more of a cinimatic shaky-cam feel.
