4 Color Rebellion (http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2006/02/20/new-super-mario-bros-released-date-set/) brings word that the new Super Mario Bros game for the Nintendo DS will be released on May 7th!

Excellent. This one has been on my radar for quite some time.

If by excellent you mean, 'great, another Nintendo cash-in' then fair enough!

New Mario platformers come out once per generation, which is hardly overkill to me. This _is_ awesome news, especially since it's a return to 2d gameplay.

Fit - it's a proper Mario game. When is the last time Nintendo released a proper Mario game?

Back when Sunshine launched (2001?).

Everything after that, including the AWESOME Mario vs. Donkey Kong, was just a milk-it! practice.

Yaaay, out on my birthday!

I haven't played a really good 2d platformer in ages, so this'll be mine, good reviews permitting.

Exactly, in my opinion the last proper mario was Super Mario Worlds, so this is EXCELLENT news to me. Lets hope its juts as good as SMW and SMB3!

This is awesome news - If you are a pathetic nintendo fan who has never had sex, not _even_ with a catholic priest.... awesome. Excellent!!!
Just kidding... Another Mario - hurrayawn.

Dammit, I knew I shouldn't have attempted to imitate a Nintendo hater - they are a breed unto themselves and cannot be imitated.

For the record, I reckon this will be pretty awesome.

I got it, don't worry.

Just chalk this up to the other 98% of the time.

Finally a use for my DS beyond Warioware! I just hope it can live up to the awesome that is SMB3 (still the definitive Mario game as far as I'm concerned).

My advice to you (for what it's worth) is as follows:

1. Read the leading post

It's important you don't skip on step 3. You may end up looking like a fool if you do.

I'd consider Sunshine a proper Mario game if SM64 is a proper Mario game.

If by excellent you mean, 'great, another Nintendo cash-in' then fair enough! :rolleyes:Hey there, this is the only Mario game I've been interested in since World on the SNES.

My only quandary is how they are managing to get these year+ development cycles on a handheld. Both this and Mario had playable movies or demos more than a year ago when the system shipped. Must be nice, buncha lemon sucking bastards.

Edit: yeah I know fit was just being sarcastic.

Mario Sunshine was alot of fun. If certain people didnt care for it, then that's their problem. It is most definitely a "proper" mario game in all regards.

Fine. Criticism retracted. Given previous responses by you people it wasn't an unreasonable knee-jerk reaction, however. Besides that, who precisely am I looking like a fool in front of? Do I care?

If you don't like the people or care about their opinions, why do you post here? My dad used to call behavior like that "showing your ass".

Define "you people", please. There are 5,714 members here (5,713 not counting you, of course).

It's only taken them 14 years since the last real 2D Mario game, Super Mario Land 2.

How's it going to live up to that? It's some serious nostalgia they are up against.

Yoshi's Island was by far my favorite game in the series, but some don't consider it a "proper" Mario game. It was the game in the series where they really just busted loose and tried all sorts of crazy stuff. I hope the new Mario DS can evoke some of that spirit and it looks like it will.

I am very surprised by the early release. I thought this would be a big Fall title for them. It's clear Nintendo needs something to carry the 2nd quarter though, since Gamecube sales are obviously going nowhere. So we'll have Tetris DS, Metriod and Mario all within a month. That should boost their sales quite well. All three are highly anticipated by me and will be my first three game purchases all year.

I do have one question: why is it still called "New Super Mario Bros.?" YOu would think that this close to the release date we would have an actual name. They should call it "Super Mario World 3" if they really wanted to cash in on the success of the series. But we'd need one of those clever "D. S." acroynyms to follow for a subtitle. Any ideas?

Well, as has been pointed out, this is the first new Mario sidescroller in a long, long time. I Kind of like New Super Mario Bros. It is! At anyrate, March looks like a good time to own a DS. I'll have to see what this Tetris DS is all about ...

I love playing more traditional platformers, and the return to 2D looks like it will be fun. I can't wait to play this game.

If you've hung around EA for even a few days, you'd know the DS (and Nintendo in general) gets a lot of love from "us people", so I'm not sure which responses you're refering to.

You should also take note that the  emoticon means "I'm being sarcastic" and Fitbabits uses that one a lot.

Hooray. This game must be pretty good. It will be hard to stop playing Ouendan, though. One of my top 5 games ever.

If any game was going to do it, this would be the title to push me to pickup a DS. 2d sidescrolling platform goodness.... mmmm....

Concidering all the other games I've been waiting for have been postponed, between Tetris DS and this new SMB game, I'll be happy.

Damn DS, taking up all my time. I never have time to play anything else!

Has anyone seen the review of the Princess Peach game in the new Game Informer? It got a really positive review from both reviewers and it says it plays like a classic Mario Bros game with great level design and all the classic Mario characters. Nothing for years and then we get two great 2D platformers based on the Mario franchise in two months!? I really miss great 2D games. I wish this would start a renaissance of 2D game design but I'm not holding my breath.

Well, it does seem like developers are realizing that there is a market for 2D games. Just look at the various GB versions of Castlevania and Metroid from recent years.

People are starting to realize that just because you CAN make a 3D game doesn't mean you must. More consumers need to realize that just because a game is in 3D does not automatically mean it is better than a 2D counterpart.

I'm with you though Eternal Dan. I would like nothing better than to see more quality 2D games come out on something other than an Nintendo handheld. Sadly, mainstream consoles seem to have forbidden this since the PS1 days.

Are there any recent screenshots of this? I saw a long time ago, but was wondering if anything new has appeared. Either way, I can't wait for this to appear...luckily I'll have SPP to tide me over as far as plaformers go :D

God, where are all of these Yoshi's Island posers coming from.

Why can't these nerds go back to worshipping Mario 3.

Just curious, but can anyone point me to a link or some such that states clearly this is a New Mario game and not just a graphical enhancement of a previous installment?

The only screen shots I've seen look a lot like SMS3 "DS". I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it was more than just a face lift,

I've dealt with enough marketing people to know that it isn't... :o

Some of the screenshots show off what appear to be new tricks, but the one gameplay video seemed really familiar to me. Like I've played that level before... just not as pretty.

it's not like anyone really cares though... is it. They might say they do. But deep down inside, all they want to do is play SMB3 on their DS without it being SMB3 for the GBA playing on their DS.

Wait... did that make any sense. Oh well.

I'm estatic that there will be wi-fi, simultanious co-op in this game.
If I remember correctly. And yes, "New Super Mario Bros." is the real title. They dropped the (working) from it some time ago, according to my super-secret Nintendo mole.

Or PR rep, whichever works.
