IGN (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/689/689267p1.html) has a hands on preview of Dead Rising. They are also hosting the official trailer which is stock full of 3 minutes of gameplay footage.

In this updated build, we got our hands on many more tools of zombie genocide than in the previous demo. The list is long, but among them were safety cones that could be shoved over a zombie's head to blind them, medieval swords, battle axes, light sabers, coat hangers to jam through zombie throats, hockey sticks and the ability to take slapshots, machine guns, plasma screen TVs, shotguns, pistols, soccer balls, potted plants, chainsaws, 2x4s, metal rods, skateboards, shovels and fully deployed beach umbrellas. In total there are over 250 different items you can use to break rotting faces.
Holy frickin crap. And I thought Condemned had a lot of weapon options.

Damn, damn, damn.... I heard that you could use just about anything as a weapon... is that a giant stuffed teddybear in one screen?

This looks like one of those games where half the fun is just messing around and trying different things...I love that. Looks like a nice sense of humor, too.

Bizzarely, this game is shaping up to be what that old PSX game Fighting Force, by Eidos, claimed it would be when it was first in production.

This and GRAW are seriously making me reconsider waiting for Gears Of War to get a 360.

Two to three hours sounds short to me not matter how Capcom tries to spin it. I understand what they are going for in attempting to focus the player's efforts, but that amount of time is an average gaming session for me. It sounds like they are going to make replaying vital to the game, but I still wish it was longer.

It might have been cool if Capcom went the other direction and gave us the full 72 hours and made it so that the player has to find safe spots to rest and so on, but I understand that is asking for a completely different game that what they are going for.

The other thing I hope is that it does not suffer from the State of Emergency factor. The previews leading up to that game were similarily positive, but when it came out it was an exercise in tedium. Dead Rising seemingly shares a lot in common, but it sounds like they have managed to make it interesting enough. The three hour game time probably helps it in this regard.

That being said, I still want this game quite badly. It is certainly one of the few things that still has me interested in a 360.

Same here, but I think that making the game take an average gaming session to finish could be a really good thing. If the game is not based purely on streaming content with cinematic peppered throughout (like most titles) then a greater focus can be placed on mechanics and versatility in gameplay. If properly implemented, you can have a gaming session that has a satisfying conclusion, then later think of another fun way to play the game or an area you haven’t explored and play it again. Personally, I’d prefer this approach over the copy/paste gameplay that many other games feature in order to stretch the play time, at least with this approach I can choose to replay the content I like rather than being forced to replay the content the developer thought I’d like just to reach the game’s conclusion (which is why I don’t finish many games).

I love zombie games and movies. This and Oblivion might make me get the 360. That is if I can find the damn thing.

Just read there is NO MULTIPLAYER for this!! What the hell? This is a perfect game for coop action. Throw hundreds of zombies at me and my buddy on Live and you've got instant replay value. How stupid!

True next generation will be when THE BODIES DON'T FRIGGIN DISAPPEAR! I want to be crawling over zombie bodies dammit.

I'll still buy it...

I agree. Oh and the gaming having no co-op...ridiculously stupid. If a game has a 2-3hr completion time, how in the f_ck can you not add multiplayer?! That alone can help add hours onto the game's life. Stupid.

Games getting shorter is one thing, games getting hyper-short is frigging ridiculous. I hope this trend seriously stops.

There are now two main reasons for me not to spend $60 on this, even though it was one of my top 5 most wanted for 360.

a: two hours of gameplay? thats $30 an hour...thanks but no thanks.
b: no multiplayer? Awesome, so that two hours is really all I'm gonna get...two hours to complete the game would have been perfect for xbox live co-op.

Co-Op would be great, If we can have Hi-Def explosions, gun fights, Etc. why not this?

LoL at this game.

But it'll suck unless it has cameos from Resident Evil.

Depends on the set up for me.

Take Panzer Dragoon Orta... easily my favourite game on ye olde Xbox and one that only took a couple of hours to complete.

Why did I keep playing it over and over and over? It was addictive and short enough that going for new high scores never felt like too intense an undertaking. Had PDO been longer it would have suffered in the replayability stakes, the run from start to finish could be visualised as a short term goal... no point going for score attack style gameplay if to get the better score you're going to need a couple of days worth of play.

I'm hoping Dead Rising works on a similar presmise. It worked for PN03 (I know, hardly a game the general public went nuts for but it remains one of my fav of the Capcom 5.. err... 4... err... how many did they end up releasing by the end ;)) and I dare say Capcom would be able to pull it off again. I mean damn... how good does the carnage look?! :D

With only 3 hours of gameplay, this sounds like the perfect rental.

My impression from the previews was not that there was three hours of gameplay, but three hours a game. And in that time it'd be pretty much impossible to see everything, do all the missions, rescue all 170ish people, etc. I think that's actually a good idea, and adds some intensity to it -- how much can you do and how high a score can you get? I think the comparison to Panzer Dragoon Oorta is great, that was a short game that I replayed the hell out of...

Do people get pissed off at Madden because you can only play four quarters in a game?

Yeah, I got the same impression you did. A single game will end in three hours, but wildly different things can/will happen each time you play.

PN03 was a HORRIBLE dissapointment. State of Emergency was UTTER CRAP, that only sold because people were silly enough to think it had anything to do with GTA.

If people are using these things to describe this quater-munching shallow arcade game; count me out. I've already wasted enough 360 money on Ridge racer and Full Auto. :p
