Next-Gen (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2278&Itemid=2) has some numbers from last weeks gaming sales in Japan. Surprisingly the PSP outsold all other machines including the DS and PS2. Also, the most popular software title is a Nintendo DS game called "DS English Training."

Umm....yeah.......

Software:
1. DS English Training (Nintendo, DS): 72,290 (424,214)
2. Train Your Brain 2 (Nintendo, DS): 70,407 (1,213,603)

Huh. No wonder the Japanese are considered some of the most intelligent people in the world. They actively pursue intellectual stimulation while the "cool" thing to do in the States is avoid it.

Japanese gamers continue to learn English from their Dual Screens at an alarming rate.

That just cracks me up. So if they learn English they'll suddenly realize we closely track their game sales and debate the significance of their trends in video games? Good God, we'll seem less cool then we already are! ;)

I haven't been following the sales to much over in Japan. Is it that the PSP has just experienced a huge surge in sales or is it that the DS sales have subsided since the announcement of the Lite?

The news of the DS lite is starting to hit this week, coupled with the lack of actual hardware. The figures from the week before where fairly intresting, the PSP beat the DS by around 500 units due to shortages of DS units, psp sales didn't go up much if at all.

They where even importing DS's from america to meet demand.

Is it that the PSP is getting hot over there or is the DS out of units? Depends on who you ask. But the software that is selling is kind of telling.

PSP is outselling the DS because we don't have any DS hardware on the shelves here in Japan. It's been off the shelves (sold out) for what seems like over a month now. No doubt, to build up the hunger for the DS lite coming out in 2 weeks.

Got 2 DS lite's put aside for me already....see ya on 03/02 =)

My bro, stationed in Japan, mentioned to me yesterday he couldn't find a DS anywhere. Him and some buddies have been to two major cities.

When I fisrt read this, I thgouht the same thing, but then I remember my conversation I had with him.

It may also be possible that those who want a DS, have one. :)

Either way, good for Sony a little competition never hurt anyone. However, we shall see when Lite comes out.

So, the DS has been out of stock in major cities, making it difficult to purchase; the new sleeker, smaller, brighter DS Lite comes out in 2 weeks and as a result, current DS sales are down?

Must be some kind of mystic voodoo Sony is using to pull ahead in sales over there, right?

Yeah, one of the biggest reasons for the PSP outselling the DS here is that there are no DS units available in the stores. Guess that helps Sony out. ;)

Okamura-san....are you at Namco by Shin'ei koukou? If so, I used to work right beside you (next building over beside the Bikkurizushi =)

I love this site and check it every hour or so, but doesn't it get annoying that the only time sales numbers are mentioned in Japan is when the PSP manages to eek by the DS for a week? Heck I love both of em, but has anybody looked at the DS release calendar for the next month and a half? I thought we had it good with the releases running up to Christmas.....

I'd love a Japanese-Training game for the DS. I really want to learn and if they make it fun, I'd be all set.

Software: 60% of top 10 were DS titles. 10% of top 10 titles were PSP.

DS pieces sold: 271,550
PSP pieces: 20,126

Let me do the math so you don't have to start->run->calc

That's 7.4% PSP sales vs. DS sales. Good thing the money is made on the software, eh Nintendo? ;)

Hardware: DS is sold out, and it's super-sexy HAWT little love-child comes out soon. PSP is steady. Did I mention the new DS is freaking slick-nasty-shiny-reflective-tiny-H.O.T.? In an attempt to sow the seeds of buying a 2nd DS, I unfortunately sabatoged myself by describing the sweet delectable beauty of the DS Lite, and subsequently convinced my wife that *she* needed the new hotness. Leaving me with the old and busted.

Dual DS Lite upgrade?

/sigh

The DS has been sold out and people are holding off for DS Lite.

PSP winning this week is like accidentally winning a point from a karate master.

Thats because it becomes news. It's news because it's not supposed to happen. :)

Also having to do with system sales; which system sold more last holiday season, the 360 or the GCN?

It could be because the DS is almost sold out in all of Japan, so people see the PSP and say "uhhh shiny" just in japanese.

I think what people are missing hree is that the DS is pretty much sold out in Japan which will be contributing to the PSP beating the DS this week. That plus the DS lite is coming out.

sorry...

Agreed entirely.

I'll also note that it's hilarious that someone mentioned their concern that these sales numbers are only mentioned when the PSP has scored a win. Wasn't it just yesterday that EvAv was a shill site for Nintendo and the DS?

In other words, some of you people need to stop looking for an editorial slant towards or against a particular console - it ain't there. It's pretty clear that both the submitters and editors are looking for things that are a) interesting and b) controversial. That's certainly why the RSS feed is on MY toolbar. :)

If you don't think there is an editorial slant toward or against certain consoles then you haven't been around here very long or ever read a post by Evil Avatar himself. He CLEARLY hates anything Nintendo puts out and loves anything made for Microsoft's consoles. He also loves anything made by a company that pays to advertise on his website or companies that give him free stuff. No payolla here!

If Evil Avatar (man/myth/legend/Microsoft Shill) was the only editor on the site I might make generalizations and talk about this site's editorial slant myself. Since he isn't, and since the various editors all have their own preferences, I can only judge by the overall news that gets posted - and I've observed that good and bad news gets posted about all the consoles at various times (like, you know, when good and bad news happens/is reported). Every console extant has been "raked over the coals" in news posts on this site since I've been visiting...

Newposts are user submitted, so that bias is skewed to what we submit. Any bias is the result of the bias of the whole community, not just evil.

Nope, sold out because Nintendo know's the only way to minimize profit losses on the dismal DS is to make fewer units and sell them all.

What's the purpose of DS Lite? Obviously to rekindle interest in a dying handheld.

Sorry fanbois, DS is getting owned.

Man, I was down my local electronics place and they were selling second hand DSes for almost twice their regular retail price. The crazy thing was that people were still buying them.

Can they not hold on a few more weeks?

Yeah, its the same failed strategy they pulled with the GBA SP, that didn't work out at all for them.

I'm going to be all over the ds lite when I arrive in Japan on 3/3. Hopefully it won't be impossible to find!

Recently my girlfriend went back to japan to visit her parents, and she told me that EVERYONE was playing DS's and she barely saw any psps.

I'm glad I got my ds, its rekindled my intrest in games.
