It has been a busy day on Steam with several items of note:

Runic Games' action-RPG, Torchlight (http://store.steampowered.com/app/41500/), has been released for $19.99 and there's a demo (http://store.steampowered.com/app/41510/) available if you want to give it a try.

Behold Torchlight, a fresh new Action RPG franchise developed by Runic Games. Torchlight is being developed in Seattle by a veteran team composed of the designers and leads of projects like Diablo, Diablo II, Mythos, and Fate. Our team has spent many years honing and evolving this unique style of gameplay.

The adventure is set in the mining settlement of Torchlight, a boomtown founded on the discovery of rich veins of Ember - a rare and mysterious ore with the power to enchant or corrupt all that it contacts. This corruptive power may have dire consequences however, and players set out into the nearby mountains and depths below to discover the full extent of Ember’s influence on the civilizations that have come before.

CD Projekt RED's popular RPG, The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director's Cut (http://store.steampowered.com/app/20900/), is now available (http://store.steampowered.com/news/2997/) worldwide and is on sale at 50% off.

To celebrate the worldwide availability of The Witcher, Atari and CD Projekt RED are offering this rich RPG for 50% off. Get it now, this deal ends on the 29th.

Nitro Games' latest strategy title, East India Company, is on sale (http://store.steampowered.com/news/2984/) at 60% off and has been updated with a free add-on.

Save 60% on East India Company (http://store.steampowered.com/app/25939/), now with a new add-on, Designer's Cut. Also this week get the all-new expansion Privateer (http://store.steampowered.com/app/42800/). Get them both together in the Privateer Pack (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2342/).

The free add-on, Designer's Cut, introduces a vast amount of enhancements for improved gameplay, including new port views, the ability to fight on land in island battles, the introduction of multiplayer modes "Beehive" and "Breakthrough", history graphs to help track long term progress, and many more new features to make East India Company a deeper experience than ever before.

"In Designer's Cut, we made several improvements to the original game to make it even better," said Kim Soares, lead designer for East India Company. "Some features were chosen from the ideas presented to us by the East India Company community. This kind of feedback from the active players is invaluable, as they have spent hundreds of hours playing our game and know it inside and out."
Also, there have been updates released for Nation Red (http://store.steampowered.com/news/2999/) and Company of Heroes (http://store.steampowered.com/news/2998/).

Update: Homegrown Games' shooter, Painkiller Resurrection (http://store.steampowered.com/app/39560/), is now available (http://store.steampowered.com/news/3003/) too.

Forklord:
If you ever played a little game called "Fate" back a couple years ago, it's that particular guy/team, it's basically that type of game, only more in depth there are actually 3 classes with 3 skill trees, a diablo 1 style spell system (You learn spells from drops) tons of loot you also have a little pet either a dog or a cat which you can use to carry loot for you and equip with spells and items to help you along the way.
It's pretty addictive so far I'm really digging it.
If your i-net can stand it there is a 30 minute preview of gameplay over at http://Giantbomb.com/ (http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-torchlight/17-1551/)

torchlight is a blast, the pets are a solid component. I wish I could co-op now is the only thing holding my own enjoyment in check

Yeah, it's a damn shame they made it single-player only. Between this and Borderlands, I'm getting a huge Diablo-esque gameplay fix this week.

About 6-8 months ago I told about a half a dozen buddies that they neededto get The Witcher: EE. I said that if they didn't absolutely love it, I'd reimburse them the cost of the game.

I haven't had to pay a penny.

It feels like a cartoon version of Diablo, even the music sounds like Diablo. Instead of traveling the world there's one dungeon below the town with a ton of floors. It's really fun.

It's actually made by ex Diablo/Blizzard developers

if you guys REALLY want to support torchlight, but it directly from their site, not the fat middle man that (steam/dd/etc). that way the dev gets 100% of your money.

otherwise all you're doing is replacing gamestop with gabe.

Just a heads up here; the Painkiller version currently available on Steam is an alpha/beta version, according to Steam and Jowood forum posts. I would hold off buying it until it's fixed.

I'm just glad these offers are also available for the UK xD
Doubt I'm gunna actually buy any of them, though, I don't have the time for a new game.

I bought the Witcher and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. yesterday. Both worth the scratch. I'm happy! :)

The article misses to point out that you don't have to buy Torchlight via steam, but can also buy it directly from the developer via paypal or google checkout.
It just seems the obvious choice to me, since they'll get more money although you pay the same, and you're not steam dependant.

Just mentioning that there is a choice.

Yeah, $19.99 for The Witcher is about right. That's the most I would ever pay for a Steam game. You have to take into account that you can never sell the game down the road. Anyone who pays more than that for a Steam game is crazeeeeeeee.

My Steam games probably average out to less than $7 each.

Most people don't even sell their old PC games anyway so I don't see how that is an issue. I'd say The Witcher was a worthy game at $49.99 and all the enhancements it has gotten make it a real value at $19.99.

If you resell PC games you are firmly in a very tiny minority. If you manage to resell PC games at a price that makes them cost roughly $20 (what you said a Steam game is worth) than you're obviously a great salesman.

I've seen valid concerns against digital distribution; this isn't one of them.

sorry i don't get this, while i do understand the benefit for a developer when he actually runs his own show the downside to using any store system feels massively exaggerated.
and wtf is it about replacing gamestop with gabe. stores aren't the freaking problem. the problem seems to be the that gamestop is selling 2nd hand wares at very low discount to the full store price. (never bought at them).
Runic Games did a great thing by bypassing the 1$ = 1€ steam system. and that is something i supported (2ndly). i bought the game, that's a ton of support right there!
