No PS3 to play with on the Taipei games show according to reports (http://www.wlbz2.com/home/article.asp?id=31719).
The managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment Asia tells reporters at the Taipei Game Show the company wants to be completely prepared when it begins selling PlayStation 3. He stops short of saying when that will be.
This is getting a bit weird.

March 22nd is when they've said we will get details. Of course, that doesn't mean the'll have a playable machine then either, and early (sourceless) reports have indicated that the final dev kits that were released in January can't possibly fit in the case we've seen (guessing we'll get an external power supply like the X360s).
Still, yeah. . . totally scary. I want to know that it is coming together and will rock. Also, I want to know that it will have online, what the online features will be, and how much online will cost. Plus, I want to know how much the system will cost. Oh, and I'd like to know about the launch titles as MGS definitely makes me happy, but isn't enough to make me hound the game stores so that I have the FIRST preorder possible.
Not knowing any of these things yet sort of makes sense though. . . we really didn't know much about the X360 until E3 2005 and that was six months before the launch. If we learn all this in March, then we'll totally be on the same time-scale (if Sony actually does plan on releasing in September, as has been rumored).

Sony is doing a wonderful job of building anticipation among the crowd who actually regularly follows this stuff. I'd say March would be about the right time to announce their plans. 'Course now wouldn't be too bad either. We need as much time as we can to debate the sucessfulness of the PS3 before it launches. :D

They're just holding their cards until E3, just like MS and Nintendo are.

See, I have to disagree with Letter 3 (Awesome name by the way)
I'm a grad student, and to help pay the bills (and the game habit) I teach some public speaking courses. (Basicly: Communications 101). Why do I bring this up? Sony is really starting to remind me of the "soon!" students I often get. The ones that need just a little more time, But then keep asking for more time, on every project, and keep saying "Its almost done, something came up! Ill have it tommorow" Tommorow: "Uh.. I got in an accident, the hard drive failed" Etc. Etc.
I like my 360, yeah, And I really am curious what Sony is up to, but it just feels like a big stall while they scramble instead of having it done by now. (It in this case being a finalized design, pricing, etc to show us something at all concrete.)
Meh, my 2cents.

It is best to wait for E3 2006.

One thing is for sure Sony won't release the price or launch date until E3. They might show off games, talk about their online service, show off Blu-Ray, etc. earlier but those two pieces of info will be left for last.

Slightly off-topic, but I stopped by my local GameStop yesterday and had a chance to speak to the regional manager who was in doing some housekeeping duties. I asked him about the PS3 and what his take on it was. He told me, and I quote, "the wait list we have is not doing well. People have begun reclaiming the money they put down on it because it's looking like it won't ship until the fall at the very earliest. I've instructed my staff to tell people who are interested in it that we know nothing about it. Head office have asked Sony repeatedly about it and they are being told that information will be made available to them very soon. That was just before Christmas and they've heard nothing yet. We even had promotional posters made up for it and Sony instructed us to not display them. These were posters that we made at no cost to Sony."
Make of that what you will.

And the neon Xbox 360 sign happily glows alone in the store window. Soon it will be joined by actual consoles that customers can purchase ;-)

Funny, last year March was the timeframe to release the system, now it's just to release details? That's not a good way to build hype, at least for me, it shows that things are amiss on their end. I hope the system succeds, I'm looking forward to it, but by no means would I credit Sony for what's been happening so far.

Shortages are quite a bit different from vaporware

Maybe this is for the best. We complain that companies release unfinished or untested products because of ridiculous deadlines. If sony is taking the time to test and work out the glitches of the console, more power to them in my opinion.
The PS2 was a fucking disaster in this respect. I've had 2 broken units with disc reading problems and everyone I know has these problems too. Its only a rare few that have had the console for a reasonable amount of time and didnt run into any trouble with it. How many models and revisions did the thing have? five? more? Thats crazy, think about all those customers with defective, unrevised units.
My gamecube has tolerated a lot of abuse since release and is still working flawlessly, more than I can say for my 1 year old PS2 Slim.
Then again, theres the possibility that, even with these extentions, sony is so far back in the process that quality control wont make it into this generation either. I've been burned so much by them that this is what I'm expecting at this point.

I guess what we're really mad at Sony for is trumping the PS3 last year in the first place.
Nintendo had less to say about the Revolution at that point, but they've actually had something to say since then. Sony? They've said... nothing. Absolutely nothing except for bashing Microsoft and saying they're going to try their version of Live.

Sony is doing what is best for Sony. They keep telling the public that they will have info soon and trying to get them to wait for the PS3...one month at a time. If you recall, we were supposed to see playable games at the TGS, the Tapei Game show, some private showing in Jan, etc. Their main goal is to keep the fanboys firmly trained on the PS3 to retain their business. If the PS3 came out and said that it wouldn't launch until Christmas or later, then Xbox 360 would look a lot more attractive to a lot of Sony's fans. We are an impatient society.

Since when have you been able to put down money on a PS3 at GameStop?
All I've seen are the goofy lists for you to write down your name and number so you can get a call when they'll start taking money for them.

Maybe it's done on a store-by-store basis? Dunno for sure, but I can tell you that they had a list with names and dollar amounts for deposits. Wanna know what's really funny? A large percentage of the people had rolled their deposit over to Madden '07. Now that's fucked up.

Hah, the draw of Madden never ceases to amaze (and disgust?).
