Team Xbox (www.teamxbox.com) has posted their impressions (http://previews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1274/Tom-Clancys-Ghost-Recon-Advanced-Warfighter/p1/) of the single-player component of Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter.
Fans of the Ghost Recon series are typically split into two camps: the ones that prefer the slower-paced and tactical feel (not to mention the first-person view) of the original games, and the other action-oriented gamers that like the Hollywood blockbuster feel of Ghost Recon 2 and Summit Strike. For GRAW, it’s almost the best of both worlds. While the default perspective is the over-the-shoulder view, you are free to change to a first-person camera at any time. The team command system does add some tactical flavor, but the majority of gameplay does skew toward action.
Cross-Com, team commands, drones…it all sounds a bit complicated, but thankfully Ubi Paris has created a control set that fits the style of play very well. The left stick controls movement, while the camera is mapped to the right stick. The sticks can be set to inverse, but it doesn’t appear that a legacy or southpaw option is available. One click of the left stick puts you in a crouch position, while holding it for a few seconds will takes you prone. A range of functions are just a button press away with reload, weapon select, vision mode, and contextual actions executed through the face buttons. With three configurations available, gamers can slightly change things to fit their liking.
..........
Xbox 360 gamers have been patiently waiting for the “next big thing” for their new console, and it looks as if Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is going to be it. While we were a bit skeptical of how far Ubisoft Paris could take the series, after playing through the single-player campaign, we’ll eat crow.
As a solo game, GRAW has the next-gen feel we were hoping for, but doesn’t make things overly complicated. With a few tweaks to the AI (which is currently ruthless) and minor visual fixes, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter will be for the Xbox 360 what Rainbow Six 3 was for the Xbox.
Man, I so want to play this right now...
