I was pleasantly surprised by Psychonauts' Xbox victory. It seems people have voted wisely for the most part. None of the games on the list are undeserving of praise.

You know, RE:4 is now $20(GCN). It's also on the PS2 and coming soon to the PC. You should really give that game a shot. If you dug F.E.A.R., then'll probably dig RE:4.

I completely agree with Psychonauts on the Xbox. It breaks my heart to see that it didn't do as well in sales as it deserved to--not just because I want Tim Schafer to succeed wildly, but also because it doesn't bode well for the odds of additional quirky, creative, outside-the-box games like this in the future.
Granted, the gameplay itself in Psychonauts was nothing groundbreaking, but who says all innovation has to be in controls and play mechanics? What made the game great was the original artistic style and the superlative voiceover work. It was always the same thing with the occasional exceptional adventure game like Day of the Tentacle--exploring, picking up things, and using them in different places was by no means an original implementation of adventure gameplay, but it was the incredibly fun environment and wacky story that made it excel.
Kudos to Tim and company--may financial fortune shine brighter on any of your future quality endeavors.

Wow, I really think I need to bite the bullet and pick up Psychonauts. I have a 360, does anyone know if the XBox version is compatible?
Are the PC and XBox version identical? I think I'd rather slump down on the couch and play this one on my TV...
Edit: HOLY! Psychonauts for PC is only $9.99 at GoGamer.com!!!! (http://www.gogamer.com/cgi-bin/GoGamer.storefront/SESSIONID/Product/View/001PSYC)

Supposedly, yes. I've never played the PC version, but as long as you don't mind using a keyboard/mouse setup (or snagging a PC controller) to play a platformer with, then yeah, I'd say so.

I have a copy of RE4 for the Cube, but I haven't even opened it yet. :shame:

Yes, because no other Ubisoft-published game has Starforce and therefore there is no precedent for it. If it does not have Starforce I will be very surprised.

Heh, yeah there is! I bought one of those new HP DLP sets, and I'm still waiting for the firmware update. Some of the sets have issues connecting a PC to the TV, mine is one of them.

I find it interesting that the overwhelming GC game of the year (and, for many, overall game of the year) is Resident Evil 4... a violent, scary, game full of blood! How wonderful that the best "mature" game of last year was on the GC!

Suprised? Sort of. I think top games from 2004 should still be considered if they were released close to the end of 2004 and were still highly populated at the end of 2005. Both WoW and Halo2 deserve honors because most of the gamers I know still play one or the other regularly.
Also, GTA:SA was not included on the Xbox voting list and that is the one I would have voted for. Psycho was a good concept and was unique in a lot of aspects, but when you boil it down to its basics it still was an old-school platformer that made you collect useless doodads.

1) Which is why those two games got game of the year honors in 2004. Given that rationale, we would have to award Counter Strike(:Source) game of the year over and over because of the amount of people playing it. Not going to happen.
2) GTA:SA was horrible. It was rehashed of the same ol' with a new map and a new story (which also had a horrible backdrop: Gangs? Please. Give me back the Mafia in GTA3 and GTA:VC.) It also was released in 2004 (I believe) on the PS2 and was only transferred to the Xbox in 2005; same game, different platform, therefore not 2005 GOTY material.
3) Your useless Doodad could apply to any game. Thats the point of the game, is to collect your useless Doodads to become stronger.

I'm really happy that SotC made it for GOTY. I know most people who played it would agree that it deserves it, but I'm surprised that it didn't get trampled by some other, lesser game.
Just goes to show the calibre of people on the EvAv boards. Nice to see that no sports title with the year 2006 in the title made the list.

Right. SoTC really evokes a certain atmosphere that may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I found fascinating. Play through the whole thing, and you'll probably find yourself thinking about it long afterwards. If you've only gone through the first couple of Colossi and written it off as a bunch of boss battles, you didn't really, as fitbabits puts it, immerse yourself enough.

Did you ever truly play it or are you full of dookie? Did you at least get past the first Colossus? I don't want you defending a game you haven't played, you turkey. (changed from wop, which means something different than I thought. I'm an idjit)

I've bought, rented or played all of them except for Mario Kart. The only game I've played each Sunday afternoon again & again is Civ IV. It's no Alpha Centauri or Master of Orion but it sure beats most current games in terms of replayability.

Get the PC version of Psychonauts.
I pretty much agree with these results entirely.
I get weird pop static with Psychonauts, so I think my onboard soundcard doesn't like it. I've tried all the tweaks I could find to fix it, got it all patched up, but still problems arise. Not a biggie though, as I enjoyed it even with those, and I'm sure it'll be one of those games that comes off my shelf every once and a while for a quick bout of awesome.
I wasn't suprised by this list, really. I love my copy of Mario Kart, I only wish I had more friends around here to play it multiplayer with. I'd try to do the online stuff, but I enjoy it so much more to just sit around and play with my friends right near by, ya know? I'm glad all the games that won were good games, as well.
