View Full Version : Exit Review

IGN (http://psp.ign.com/articles/689/689010p1.html) has their review up for Exit for the Sony PSP. This Viewtiful Joe style game doesn't fair too well.Aside from the awkward controls, another thing we had problems with was the amount of trial-and-error levels towards the later sections of the game. While you have access to an overview map, it's very rudimentary and only gives you an idea of how things are laid out. And since you can only scroll a certain distance from your character, you'll have a hard time planning out your attack for the level as you can't see everything at once. There are many times where you'll push a box, only to find out that you need to wait until you've gotten past where it's headed before you have someone else push it. Once things like this are done, there's no going back, so you have to restart the level over again and start from scratch. Unfortunately, these trial-and-error tasks really build on each other later in the game, so if you think you've solved one thing correctly, you might realize you still haven't done it right and need to start over yet again because, as mentioned, there's rarely ever any going back.

The overall look is pretty cool, it's a shame the game doesn't play that well.

IGN is a poor example of a review, because right now they are the lowest review score for the game. Gamespot gave it an 8.0 Ironic that IGN is actually being more critical than other places, huh?

I rarely, if ever, trust IGN. They are a good news site and they can have some good content, but their reviews are laughable, at best.

IGN simply doesn't feel pity for the PSP, or any platform. They usually try their best to tell it like it is.

Exit is a decent game, but I thought it'd have more impact.

Are we talking about the same IGN?

I second that. Don't trust them a bit.
IGN is OK for news, images and video, but for reviews I check Gamespot.

I'll save judgement for this game when I actually play it, but I find it interesting that this is the review that was posted on the front page, instead of one of these:

Gamespot 8.0 (http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=665862)

1UP 9/10 (http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=665562)

Gamespy 4.5/5 (http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=665888)

Game Informer 7.25/10

Especially since everyones knows IGN sucks for reviews.

Exit is an excellent game, I'd give it a 8/10 but I hail from the Eurogamer school of scoring and that includes the full scale.

100 levels included with the game and 90 are available for download for my Japanese copy.

Gamespot gave it an 8.0, and they are the most well respected review site on the net.

I picked it up yesterday, went in to get either age of empires for the ds or this and they didn't have age of empires...easy decision. So far I'm enjoying it, it's a very cool graphical style and it's exactly what I thought it would be after reading several of the reviews and previews.

Yes, the characters control sluggishly, but that's been true for nearly all of the games of this style(out of this world, flashback, abe's oddysey, etc) because it does add a little bit of difficulty. The game comes with 100 maps to complete and they will eventaully release 100 more downloadable online(only 10 are available now, but they are broken by having insanely low timers, probably be corrected later) The game does require a 2.50 update(or some kinda way to get around that) but I thought I saw that they had finally hacked even 2.50 for homebrew?

Basically skim all of the reviews and watch a video or two to make an informed decision, don't expect him to be able to spin on a dime or for it to be a platformer only, it's about 75% puzzler and 25% platformer. I'm just worried that the difficulty in the later levels will be ramped up too highly, considering I've already had to restart a couple missions due to error or time in the second batch of 20, so it might get really hard later, not sure yet.

And on a side note, when did ign stop (allegedly)taking bribes on game reviews? They have gone from the highest scores to the lowest in the past few months, it's quite odd, and gamespot's scores have been conversely boosted recently, not to insane old-school ign numbers but to higher than some other sites. Weird!

I'm just gonna chime in here, IGN is a bloody shill and the rest of the reviews are quite positive. Nice job picking this one review and saying the game 'doesn't play well'.

I agree that the controls take some getting used to, but the concept is unique, the style is refreshing, and you're not shooting anyone in the face. We need more games like this.

I love a good FPS, but there's more to gaming life than killing something.

Thanks for the info. IGN was the first site I visited this morning and saw the review there. I didn't have time to check out the other sites.

I'd like to see one of our own do a review. Bap or fitbabits or kef. But, yeah, IGN sucks for reviews. Eurogamer is good though. I just usually go to gametab and see if the reviews as a whole are positive or negative.

IGN sux and everyone knows it. Their reviews aren't to be trusted, whether they're for or against the game. They have no journalistic integrity, whatsoever.

Eurogamer is good though.

I actually think Eurogamer is pretty bad, they seem to have three normal scores 4, 6 and 9. Often their reviews aren't very informative and generally don't fit any where with my own experience or what pretty much every other reviewing site.

I'll go on the record and say its a great puzzle-y game. It's not a fast paced (so the sluggish controls aren't such a problem), once you get used to the fact that Mr. ESC doesn't jump immediately when you tell him, you're fine (prince of persia or flashback style).

Mr ESC will beat anyone who doesn't like it.
