View Full Version : Next Friday the 13th Movie: Michael Bay to Direct?

Yes, E! Online is reporting (http://entertainment.tv.yahoo.com/entnews/eo/20060215/114003012000.html) that craptacular director Michael Bay's production company has been charged with 'breathing new life' into Jason Voorhees:
Now it's up to Bay and his Platinum Dunes to do for Friday the 13th what it did with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The production company's 2003 remake of Massacre exceeded expectations, raking in more than $80 million and spawning a prequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. The latter, starring Jordana Brewster, is scheduled to unspool Oct. 6, a week before the new Friday.
Bay is seeking a return to blockbuster form after last summer's box-office bomb The Island. His hit credits include Armageddon, Bay Boys II, Pearl Harbor and The Rock.
Let's hope that he gets somebody else to direct it, because if they want to 'breathe new life' into the franchise, they should pick someone whose last movies haven't been consistently DOA.

I liked Armageddon, The Island and The Rock.
The Friday the 13th franchise needs "new life", but I doubt anyone in Hollywood can pull it off. It needs a more classic feeling to it, a move away from the slasher genre and into something more creepy and moody.
Did anyone else see Freddy vs. Jason? There is a great bit at the ending with Jason that could be expanded on.

God, its done, dead, buried, resurrected, dead, buried, resurrected, drowned, resurrected, buried, resurrected, burned, resurrected, cyrogenically frozen, resurrected, zaphorized, dead!
Please, for the love of dog, let it stay that way! If any horror series truly needs another take, its Hellraiser, a Hellraiser where we pretend they never made any movies past the 2nd one!

I think that the Friday the 13th franchise is salvagable, but it's not actually going to return. The new movie may or may not be a hit, depending on how hyped it is, and entirely depending on how hyped it is.
Odd fact: There was actually a Jason vs Leatherface comic. Check it out sometime, it's stupid and fun.

Despite the site's moniker, EvAv has always been a place that presents a mix of gaming news with other "geek culture" stuff, be it dealing with TV, movies, comics, or otherwise. This may be old news by film site standards, but I certainly had never heard it before, so I dunno what the big deal is.

We haven't always been, it's usually loosely related. This is a bit more out-in-the-woods so to speak. It belongs in the forums.
I guess Evil likes it.

Platinum Dunes did the TCM remake and is working on the TCM prequel now as the article says. They did a pretty good job with TCM, of course I still prefer the original. It seems that the project is in good hands. Rumor is it will be a "pre burlap sack" film set between part 1 and 2.
Since we are talking horror has anyone seen the clips from The Hills Have Eyes remake?? It looks kick ass, I hope they don't cut most of it before it's released but I expect that they will. Alexandre Aja is very talented, I loved High Tension (uncut original verison) and he seems to have done a great job on Hills.

Well, maybe not always, but for as long as I've been around. Either way, I like it too, so it seems Mr. Evil and I finally agree. :p

Of course they are releated. Watching Battlestar Galactica and reading Comic Books is what you do while you are waiting for the next 250+ MB patch file to download. :D

Oh my God. Sorry folks. I'm home sick today and my meds are doing lovely things to my ability to concentrate.
I liked Armageddon, The Island and The Rock.
The Rock was cool. I would have liked The Island if they didn't have such a ridiculous set of chase sequences. (Nice to know I could survive a 200+ foot fall...into a net.) The Island looked like two movies slapped together: one decent Sci-Fi plot, with an over-the-top brainless action flick. As for Armageddon...meh. Maybe I like a sprinkling of plot in my movies instead of moronic flag-waving overwrought faux-emotional scenes. (I'm looking at YOU TOO, Pearl Harbor.)

I'm a huge Friday the 13th fan...I think they need to return to the style that was in the first 4.
I don't think Michael Bay is the solution...

I dont know what you guys are expecting. A great director would most likely not go this route. Although, a David Lynch Friday the 13th would kick ass... anyways, at least this is a guy who can get a good budget and put forth some great production values.
Also, am I the only one who played the Friday the 13th game for the NES? This is SOO gaming related.

I remember the post about the boots. I also remember when we used to get a new format every couple of months, followed by a massive crash followed by mass re-registering. Man those were the days!
What I really want to see is a new Nightmare on Elm Street movie. None of that "Freddy is REALz!!" New Nightmare crap either. Wes Craven can stay the hell away from "his" franchise.

I completely agree man. The clips on filmforce (you will have to pass through the fiery black gates of ign to get there but they come highly recommended) look fan-fucking-tastic. I've never seen the version of high tension released here (only the original version) so I have no idea how bad it was cut, but apparantly Hills originally had got an NC-17, so I'll see it in theaters no doubt, but I'm more anxiously awaiting the unrated DVD.
P.S. The Rock fucking rocks.

I just want to see both series get away from slasher flick and become much more cerebral, leave you terrified long after you leave the theater.

Horror flicks are great and besides I still own a copy of Friday the 13th for my C=64, so it's game related.
Anyone see Final Destination 3 yet? I enjoyed the first two, I might try and sneak out this weekend to catch the latest. Unless a horror fan tells me it's not worth my time.

It's actually "Voorhees" and not "Vorhees."
Also, New Line didn't buy the rights to "Friday the 13th" from Paramount. They bought the rights to the Jason character, which is why the last few films have been called "Jason Goes To Hell," "Jason X" and "Freddy vs. Jason."
In addition, I have no idea how this movie could have Jason in it if it's going to be a Prequel to the original film. They should either pick up where Freddy vs. Jason left off, or they should pick up at the end of Part VII and pretend 8 and 9 didn't exist.

So instead of Jason stabbing someone with a machete, the camera will first do a 360 spin around the victim, go under his or her legs, then show the blade coming through in CG.
The club scene in Bad Boys 2 was awful.

I'd have somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-4 thousand posts, if not more, so eat that bitch! :p
That's across a couple of screen names of course.
Everlost - I've heard that FD3 is pretty good. I have a friend who really loves that type of flick and he really enjoyed it. I'm planning on checking it out sometime, but I haven't seen all of the second one yet.
I'm with Kenn as far as a prequel to F13 goes. That's pretty impossible to do unless Jason's mother is the killer again. Even then they'd have a LOT of explaining to do. Then again it is a horror film, so plot is probably not first on the agenda.
A prequel to Nightmare on Elm Street would be much better. Most of the story behind Freddy's rise is already spread throughout the films, so tying it all together and filling in the spaces wouldn't be too difficult. There hasn't been a Nightmare movie (not counting Freddy vs Jason) in 12 years now, come on guys!
His hit credits include Armageddon, Bay Boys II
Apparantly "hit" is now defined as doing well at the box office, despite lacking any redeeming value whatsoever. New usage: "That movie was like being hit in the head by a guy and having your wallet stolen"
The club scene in Bad Boys 2 was awful.
And the rest of the movie wasn't?
Dude, The Island was an awesome movie. I have no idea what's wrong with everyone.

They're not blind/deaf? They have taste?
If they want to do something new with the Jason series, they really need to make it a smaller picture, not bigger. Less of the bodycount in the triple digits and get back to the idea that someone is actually stalking these kids, rather than just appearing out of the goddamn blue when they happen to be seperated from the group.
I had heard a while back though that for the teaser trailers for the TCM remake (the one that got pitch black after a few seconds and had only screams/panicked breathing moving about the cinema) was Bay's idea which could hold hope for him, but I think it would take a very special combination of people to get it right, considering how dull the final TCM product was.

So they want to ruin it...
If they do, they're about 24 years and 7 sequels too late.
It's so funny people defending the series like it was a masterpiece of American cinema, Friday the 13th had gone to hell long before Jason did. At this point even Uwe Boll probably couldn't do much worse to ruin the series.

I'm a big fan of the series too, and it is appauling that a mainstream hack like Bay is being considered to handle a sequel. I suppose it will be rated PG-13 as well, to appeal to the mall crowd...

I am so over this homage to the seventies horror oeuvre thing. Thank you geek directors, you have indeed made it very plain to me that YOU SAW LOTS OF HORROR MOVIES WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER. Big round of applause to you, you're fantastic. Now could you please make some fresh movies that new directors in twenty or thirty years will want to make a homage to?

The original Friday the 13th is a true horror classic...the first 4 in my opinion were truly terrifying and inventive.
