View Full Version : Whores Call for Ban of GTA

Gamespot reports that sex workers (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6144286.html) are calling for a ban on Grand Theft Auto games. For those parents who are more tuned in to prostitute labor unions than the clear ESRB warning labels on every Mature-rated Grand Theft Auto game, this may help them censor products that were never intended for use by children.
Interestingly though, the prostitute union is not just worried about children. Despite clearly stating that they are against censorship in all it's forms, they call for all gamers to boycott the award-winning mature games as well.
Their credibility is lacking scientific credence as well as violent game media has not been proven to show any increase in violent behavior among adults and only short term aggressive playing among children. However, several psychological studies have shown that the habitual use of pornography or the purchase of sex increases the likelihood that males will treat females as sex objects and will be more likely to rape or abuse women physically.
The Grand Theft Auto franchise is getting attacked from all angles. Joining the ranks of politicians, policemen, and attorneys in their crusade to see the game lifted from shelves are the nation's sex workers. On its Web site (http://www.swop-usa.org/), the Sex Workers Outreach Project USA is asking parents to assist them in calling for a ban of Take-Two Interactive's controversial game.
Citing a 2001 document from the National Institute on Media and the Family's David Walsh, SWOP is calling "on all parents and all gamers to boycott Grand Theft Auto."
The organization quotes various points from Walsh's paper, including, "Children are more likely to imitate a character with whom they identify with. In violent video games the player is often required to take the point of view of the shooter or perpetrator."
No Timmy, you can't buy that game. The whore union told me it is not good for you.

Theres a WHORE union? Jesus everyone has a union these days! Except for Walmart heh.
How timely. Seriously, GTA 3 was released over four years ago. It took that long to get around to being upset about this?
Since the video game Grand Theft Auto accrues points to players for the depiction of the rape and murder of prostitutes, SWOP-USA calls on all parents and all gamers to boycott Grand Theft Auto.
Funny, I don't remember being able to rape anyone. Nice to see they don't let the truth get in their way or anything.

a) I realize the under 12 crowd finds it funny, but do you really need to say whore?
b) if there is one group that at least has a right to not like a game, it would be one that is actually represented in it. Not that I agree with their take, but c'mon.

You are a fucking idiot.
They do get beaten up in the game, if this translates to real life, it sucks to be them. Then again, this is a game and anyone who can't see the difference shouldn't be allowed to play it.

:( ...Tell me about it... I'll be so glad to be out of there.
The training video set even had one on unions. Made it sound like union reps would appear out of the shadows and break your arm if you didn't sign their papers, and steal your first born if you did. Then they'd do nothing and lauuugh. All I learned was unions are bad, Wal-Mart is happy fun time.

I quick look at the site seems to show
a) a disappointing lack of boobs and
b) it's not really a union as such, but a group advocating legalisation and legislation to help those in "the industry" to be safer. I get the feeling that it's inclusive of strippers and adult film workers too.
You are a fucking idiot.

Everybody gets/can be beaten up in GTA. Everybody can be mauled, killed, etc, there is no discrimination. That's a good thing.
It's not even tasteless, because games (just as movies, literature, music... every form of narrative basically) heavily employ clichees in their world to make them seem more recognizable/realistic.
If the ladies of negotiable affection want to be portrayed differently, it's up to them to change the stereotypes that surround them. If their pimps let them that is, since "protestin' aint hookin'" :).

Lets not forget prostitution is legal in at least one state (what do you think "what happens in vegas, stays in vegas" really means? pros)

Just a note guys. This story had a lot of angles and I tried to hit them all. . . shock, humor, and the scientific angle.
If these women really want prostitutes to be safe, they aren't going to get there by attacking games that have very little to do with increasing violence (ironically, UNLIKE their profession that DOES increase violence).
What they should do is focus on legalization so that they can have bordellos where clients names are known (force accountability), private security is hired, and the police can be on speed dial.
Not to mention regulating safety from STDs and curtailing drug use.
Their ban is ridiculous and does nothing to further their stated goals.

The idiot part was pointed at his post. The rest was added afterwards and had nothing to do with it.

They are not calling for a ban, but a boycott. That is not cencorship. This thread title is misleading, especially considering that 90% of EA readers are too lazy to actually follow the included links and read the truth of the matter for themselves.
I can see where they're coming from, even if their reasoning is flawed. I have no problem with calls to boycott. If that's all Jack Thompson was doing, I'd have no problem with him, either.

wow the ignorance on display is spellbindingly disappointing.
First of all boys, the "world's oldest profession" isn't ever going to go out of business - legal or illegal. So if they can organize the people, (notice i use the word people, 'cause that's what they are) it just makes it safer for everyone involved and there can't be anything wrong with that.
But Bean19 must feel the need to dehumanize women further. with his tactful "whore " headline. What are you looking for, the top spot on gametab? But I digress. To all of you highly moral men who are so apalled by an organization of prostitutes, be thankful they have the same types of unions in the porn business - so you can go choke yer chickens to prostitutes ("Porn Stars") in pictures and video all over the internet.

Personally I think a woman has the right to sell her own body, making prostitution legal would do a lot to solve the problems people usually associate with it.

Personally, I do my best to have no part in the porn/sex/whatever industry.
But putting that aside, it's still horribly ironic. These women are in a profession that many people consider wrong/debasing/immoral/hurting society/whatever else you want to say. Then they pick on video game makers saying that they are wrong/debasing/immoral/hurting society blah blah blah.

First off, it's LP not IP. It's not that hard to figure out.
Second, it's just a matter of decorum. Having headlines like that does nothing to help our side of the conversation. If you can't see that, get off our side.

I was hightening the irony with a loaded word.
Btw, after reading your comment, I checked gametab and this hasn't made top 10, and this hasn't made it. That is probably due to Evil Avatar having a pretty fast news day as you are right that it would have been an attention grabber (not a bad thing as long as it isn't wrong).
In this case though, as someone else pointed out, the original headline was misleading as it sad "ban" instead of "boycott". I screwed that up, have corrected it, and I'm glad it didn't get more of a spotlight as it had such a large error in it. I'll try to do better next time.

And, for the record, I don't care either way on prostitution. What a woman wants to do with her body is her business. Of course, it is a terrible thing when violence is brought into their real world business but it is also part of the life they have chosen (and don't start with that whole "they don't have a choice" thing, either). The only reason I used the word "whore" is because it pisses off supposedly "moral and politically correct" people.
I just find it immensely funny that: 1. Prostitutes are saying this game is bad; and 2. That some people on this forum can't see that or understand the concept of irony.
Prostitute and whore are two words that mean exactly the same thing and neither one is more "loaded" than the other.
:D
It's all genetic anyway, some women have the ho-gene others dont. Look at snow white for example. Seven dwars yo-ho'ing through the forest, later saved by prince charming in the classic pretty woman man ho extraction manouvre. All that, and she still gets knocked up by bigby wolf who leaves her just when the cubkids are born.
Don't be so naive guys it can't be a coincidence that women are just one X away from ho-dom. :)

This is a joke, right? How on earth can these "sex workers" be convinced that doing this will change anything? They can't expect parents to check this website, they can't expect gamers to boycott the game because of this.. what do they hope to gain? Obviously publicity, but where is the monatary gain? It seems clear they are just trying to get their image out there. Ah! It must be to gain hits on their website. Glad I didn't click. Too bad Gamespot seems to have bought it hook line n' sinker.

Only people who are whores themselves, have a close relative that is a whore, or feel obligated to speak on behalf of their only means of a sexual encounter would try to convince people on a gaming forum that "whores are people too!"

I dunno I'm all for keeping an open mind but prostitutes have never fallen into the wrelm of people I think need a lot of public support or PC treatment. I'm not religious, I think sex is fine, I think selling sex is fine. However at least it falls into that darker side of morality which is the balance we call life and society... maybe it isn't going away because there will always be a demand for it, but that doesn't make it good. Sex is so highly charged emmotionally, so base and core to all of us, its a charged issue in any light, and what could be more corrupt, more base, more emmotionless, than making it a buisness? Selling it to anyone. Basically making a blanket statement that sex isn't binding between people, isn't about emmotion, isn't to be tied to anything meaningful, it's just about money. That makes me sick. Calling a prostitute a whore isn't like calling an african american person a (you know what N-word), it's not a hate term because nobody is born a whore. If you call someone a whore your saying you hate their chosen profession. I don't like lawyers or advertizers either, if they had better insults for those professions I'd subscribe to those as well. Their job is dehumanizing, the term "whore" is just an opinion.
Also porn and whoreing aren't the same.
Porn is centered on sex and selling a video.
Whoreing is selling a PERSON.
