Celebrate Valentine's Day by viewing a montage video (http://www.gamespot.com/features/6144012/index.html?autoplay=6144139) of some of the greatest loves in video games.

Sweet little video. Happy Valentine's Day!

Nice video, shame they didn't show any FF7 stuff.

Crap video. Gamespot needs to hire a video editor bad. That shit was made on Windows Movie Maker.

Nice video, shame they didn't show any FF7 stuff.

They'd have to show Aeris doing something that is an obvious spoiler, and probably didn't want the headache of people complaining about it even though FF VII is very old now.

Plus. . . I don't know if that sentiment would be appropriate for something that is so light-hearded and warm.

Still, Final Fantasy really has done the theme of love so much better than anyone else. The other things they have in there pale in comparison to the FF VII and X stuff.

Grim Fandango?

Neither FFVIII or FFX told a believable love story. There was no connection felt at all. Hell, they didn't tell a story in general. They told a seizure.

Mozgus - How about comparing them to other video game romances?

The thing is. . . no one does an excellent job of this, so Final Fantasy is the king of it by default.

Btw, FF X did have a really believable romance. It was the main plotline that was just crazy, wacko weird. . . and the way that it impacted the romantic theme.

That video was kind of neat if not for the major FF hard-on.

The thing is. . . no one does an excellent job of this, so Final Fantasy is the king of it by default.

The cute/sweet/etc stuff from something like Monkey Island, while not exactly the stuff of literary depth, is a lot better than the overwrought, teenage angst fantasy angle MUCH (not all) of the recent Final Fantasy line of games has suffered from in that department. Yes, we all have the fantasy of being the strong sword-wielding hero that wins the affection of the hot lass with our strength and gallant heroism when we're 14 (because these things are much easier for the teen psyche to grok than that scary emotional stuff), but eventually, we're not 14 anymore. :)

(If anyone reading this is 14, go fantasy hero your brains out. Enjoy it, because the reality that pops in later is a hell of a lot more difficult and complex. But don't let that stop you now, there's a whole lifetime for that)

Seriously though, here's an idea for a game theme - a love story in which the leading male isn't the sword-wielding strongman hero (or a mysterious anti-hero). Pick on Final Fantasy games as I might, they're hardly the only ones to mine that cliche (they're just a lot more pompous in the delivery - Max Payne 2 is the same thing, just wrapped up in a less ridiculous exterior)

+10 Guybrush Threepwood!
+100 Grim Fandango

I'm replaying Grim Fandango now, and I am stunned to feel anew all the great storytelling, writing, and pacing of the game. The voice acting is incredible, the puzzles are reasonable and rational, the interface is to die for. Grim is one game that is very close to art, if any is. It's like the American counterpart to ICO or SotC, gaming boiled down to its most basic and polished to near perfection.

Tim Schaefer is a genius. An underpayed and underappreciated genius.

Eh, they lifted the music from FF8, so it'd be goofy to not have its FMVs there too.

Why waste time complaining when you could be making a superior video, though? Stick it on Google video and post the link, we'll all watch and appreciate.

Heh heh.
I thought something was amiss.

I'm also wondering why the protagonist and Viconia's (potential) relationship in BG2 wasn't there. That was the stuff of legend. I guess it just doesn't look particularly dramatic in a low res video. That must be why they didn't include it..

But Mario does.

I don't know how they could have left out the gypsy working girl from Ultima 6. I spent many a memorable fade to black with her.

It would be nice if, before a reference to a 5 year-old game is made the acronyms were spelled out at least once. I mean, I get Baldur's Gate, but what's SH? ShadowHearts? Silent Hill?

I'm not asking for too much here, am I?

I thought Tidus was gay? I mean, did you see the way he looked at Sin?
He totally wanted to be tentacle'd.

He totally wanted to be tentacle'd.That is so wrong on so many levels. The Tidus tentacle porn is obvious, but if you know who Sin is, eeesh.

I liked Arie’s romance when carried over into the Throne of Baal, assuming you treated her right in the previous game. And whiny as she was I imagine most people didn’t.

Any hot coffee?

Seriously, I think the game Mafia had a good love story in it, with the most tastefully done cg-sex.

Mafia, yes. Good job. Didn't he marry that girl, too?

I like this topic...it's making me think. And the Baldur's Gate 2 love interests were a welcome addition to the series. The new widow Jaheira (poor Khalid!) and I had a thing going. I even bought her a ring in the Amn market with our names ingraved on it.

I always had a thing for Jaheira, because secretly I like strong-willed, take-action women. I could probably never replace her Khalid, but she fell for me, and I her, our elf and human bond spanning racial gulfs.

I need to get out more.

Yeah, what about Kratos in God of War. He loved those ladies!

And no Leisure Suit Larry?!

And, to throw out a real suggestion, no KOTOR I (light side) stuff?

And I agree, too much Final Fantasy.

Dude! And you never went for Viconia? She was so strong willed / take action that at least 80% of her lovey-dubby conversations were spent berating you! Making the ones that weren't even more rewarding and heartfelt than you thought possible!

She also had the Drow backstory thing going on.

Ahh BG2... you took so much of my life away from me. And I thanked you for it..
