I played a whole lot of Stronghold and Stronghold crusader (against my brother on the lan) but I never got into Stronghold 2... it seemed wrong for some reason

The whole system was a deck of cards. You either have the specific defense against the attack, or you lose. The game would purposefully have scenarios that hamstring your efforts to defend yourself (ie. crappy terrain) and limit your ability to build troops (i.e. limited build space).
Building new castles every 3 missions, while I figure out whatever "trick" to get it working after hours of building isn't fun.
It is very pretty, and I would like to use it for D&D or something like that, but as a game: it makes me wince.
The best part: build cheap wooden walls around your expensive stoneworks, the enemy AI will attack the first wall that prevents it from attacking you directly. So... you build stone towers on hills overlooking cheap wood walls: putting enemy units in archery range, while they haplessly waste limited ammo and their units hacking your cheap walls down. Then rebuild your wood walls (2-3 rings of them) and complete the mission.

well, that tactic sounds really familiar. another way to exploit ai in the first game was to build a wood wall, but leave an opening in the wall. enemy will bottleneck there and they will fall like ducks under intense fire from your archers. I wonder if that still works.

Stronghold 1 very good game, stronghold 2 very rushed and unstable not even worth dling.
