Well, here it is. The Game Informer cover that's sure to have everyone talking about for a while. Disney Epic Mickey is indeed the cover story for the upcoming Game Informer (http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2009/10/05/spoiler-alert-epic-november-issue-revealed.aspx) and much to the chagrin of people around these parts, it will be exclusive to the Nintendo Wii from Junction Point and Disney Interactive Studios.

Hit the headline to check out a bigger version of the full cover.

This whole idea of going dark with the Disney franchise is very cool. Normally, I dislike the idea of going dark with things. . . like with Sonic or Jak & Dexter, but Disney characters have been so one-dimensional and light that I welcome this.

Although Epic Mickey looks BA from that cover shot, you're image posted actually fits much better in my head.

There's a reason Disney is "one-dimensional" and cute. They look better that way.

But, this new take does peek my interest immensley!

Hmm, the game tips its hand with that cover, I'm afraid.

Notice Mickey is holding a paint brush, has paint dripping off him, and has been previously drawn in ink.

Duh, this is on the Wii because it's going to include some kind of Okami-style gameplay painting. And that's why it won't be ported either.

This does look good, I agree, looks like good marketing. Show me a game, show me gameplay.

Sweet Merciful Crap ...

It seems to me that Disney gets it better than WB does. Disney went "dark" with Kingdom Hearts with a good result, and now this "seems" to be looking pretty damn cool.

Now, look what happened when WB tried to go extreme? Remember that WB show "Loonatics"? Woof

I agree and I'm annoyed by it. There are games that I want to like on the Wii but I refuse to pay $50 for games that look like games released on the PS2 and Xbox that now all cost less than $20. . . well, except for Persona which I buy on Day One for the PS2. :)

You know though--some games are worth it nonetheless ;) If it's good enough, you'll play it. Hell, I bought a PS2 to play Shadow of the Colossus, and never regreted it.

And just how Dark is this game gonna be? Its a Mickey Mouse game. For the Wii. It'll be about as dark as a bright, sunny day.

No offense, but it seems like many people here have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to disney.

Yes disney is family friendly, but it has never been, in Walt's orginal conceptions, syrupy and without any real emotion. I think people who are looking for "BA Mickey" should grow up. But, there is plenty of examples of Disney dealing directly, in their animated features, with guns, swords, demons, killing, death, and frankly... absolutely insane levels of moodiness and ambience. Crap... just look up "the old mill" on youtube...

If you count racism and phallic imagery as real emotion, at least.

Have to agree that this is a waste for Warren Spector. No matter how many changes you make to the color palate, Mickey Mouse has never been much more than a marketing spigot.

Unless the gameplay mechanics are really that interesting, I don't see how this is anything but an overextended reach across the aisles.

nonsense. Read this book and say that again.

It's the size of a college text book, but no other book chronicles exactly how obsessive and exacting walt disney was in pushing his animators to get real emotion and life out of his projects. It's frustrating to see just how MUCH the games industry ignores the lessons that have already been learned the hard way by disney animators.

Well played, modeps. Well played.

If taken in the right direction (well.. pretty much if it's a good game, as a result of OR despite the dark style) this could be well received. Anybody remember how much hate Kingdom Hearts was getting after it was announced, but how well received it was after it was released and people got to actually play it?

No one's saying Disney products can't evoke emotion, they wouldn't be successful, much less iconic, if they didn't. All media must evoke an emotion to connect with the experiencer.

The question is whether you could make Devil May Cry with Mickey as it's protagonist. Personally, I don't think you can, and I don't want to see the abortion that would result from someone trying :P

Virtually all of them, barring very few rare exceptions, make their way to $20 and then eventually even less. Key?

PATIENCE!

No one's saying Disney products can't evoke emotion

Nausea comes to mind...is that technically an emotion? I guess it's a biological reflexive response based upon negative emotions. :D

Yeah but why would anyone let something as simple as not understanding the history of what they are talking about be an impediment to shouting their opinions. :P

Personally I think this looks great.

Someone acknowledges a great developers skill and then infers it should be limited to very specific aesthetics? What a waste.

What is it with the close mindedness about this? Why can't people just be excited that we get a new take on classic characters that some of us grew up around?

Why are people so dead set that Mickey must be a fucking happy mouse?

I don't understand this.

Are these the same people who cannot enjoy Fallout 3 because it doesn't play at all like Fallout 1 and 2?

The majority of people in this thread are excited about it. Maybe one or two posters are not.

Are you reading the thread? Again, most people seem excited.

There are a lot more people that love to hate on Fallout 3 even though it is a fantastic game that improves upon the originals in almost every way including story, gameplay, and creating an ambient, living world.

Whereas most people are excited or at least interested in this game's art style. I haven't read the whole thread, but I don't recall reading more than one post from one person that would rather have the developer working on other projects that he is more interested in. There are also 3 posts from people that are upset that it is a Wii exclusive because of the severe hardware limitations of the Wii.

On the whole, this game is getting lots of positive buzz.

They could work with Sony and their new motion control.... hell, it might actually be playable as the controller would actually go where you point it. Sell a limited edition release when Natal launches that comes with a collectible paint brush that could be used to play the game. I'm a goddamn marketing genius!

I saw more posts in the other thread that were negative, but I get your point.

I'm still curious as to why it's disappointing that we're getting a new take on classic characters, but I suppose that's too difficult a question to answer.

That looks like Grimace in the background, that big purple McDonald's lump of a character--there's even little McD's fry boxes at his feet. And it's hard to miss the undead cow in Ronald McDonald outfit, lol. Not to mention Mayor McCheese in the left bg.

Long John Silver is on a cross? it seems, that's a fish joint.

And, is that the Ghost Buster's Marshmallow Man in the far bg? Could be the Michelin man.

Then, notice that he's cut the head off Bob's Big Boy in the foreground.

Pretty clear that the largest cross, the guy with the white suit and skull is 'the Colonel' from Kentucky Fried Chicken.

I can't peg the werewolf though. Teen Wolf, the movie, perhaps? Dunno.

agreed. i seriously don't understand why you would waste such a potentially huge production on a system that is not even capable of producing xbox 1 level graphics.

the wii is honestly the only system i've ever seen that is actually a deliberate step back in terms of console design.

nintendo used to be a company i respected. now they're a joke.

Are you stoned? This has MICKEY MOUSE on the COVER, and 'Mickey' in the title. Parents will EAT THIS UP! Putting 'Disney' on the cover is better than putting 'Lego + Anything' on the cover and you've seen how that sells. This will likely be a gigantic seller. Only the few of us who know what this title could be on another platform will even give it a second thought--and if it's good enough, the majority of us will still buy it for Wii :P
