Prey is serious, dark story, based on authentic Cherokee mythology. Themes of sacrifice, love and responsibility are explored and the story dives into emotional territory not yet explored by similar games. In Prey, gamers enter an unpredictable world where nothing can be taken for granted. Most of the game takes place within a living ship, a giant entity that can sense and react to Tommy's presence.

Prey tells the story of Tommy, a Cherokee garage mechanic stuck on a reservation going nowhere. His life changes when an otherworldly crisis forces him to awaken spiritual powers from his long-forgotten birthright. Abducted along with his people to a menacing mothership orbiting Earth, he sets out to save himself and his girlfriend and eventually his planet.

That has to be the single lamest storyline I have ever heard. Why do the Indians get the short end of the stick on everything, even video game storylines?

Heh, I thought that too Rakael. This story sounds like some serious B movie trash, not "serious" and "dark".

I find it funny how Native American lore is based on spirits of the Earth. How does this help Tommy if he's on a Space Station? Complete, and total trash

graphics don't look that bad except for the last shot (little too blocky for me). eh, might be worth checking out.

As a long-time lurker, I just had to register to reply when I saw this on the site:

"Prey makes use of Joseph's Campbell's renowned story structure, "The Hero's Journey," for guiding the main character arc. Campbell's extensive work on mythological story progression was made famous when George Lucas used it for Luke Skywalker's story arc in the original Star Wars."

...Considering how general Campbell's HJ points are, how many there are, and how widely used (if used is even the right word) they are, that's like saying "Hey, we decided to have the story contain a goal, an obstacle to that goal, and some character development. Star Wars used it, you liked that, right? Buy the game!"

I could see using Native American mythology if the game was mystery/horror/fantasy or another genre of game. But Native American sci-fi FPS? They'd better pull it off really well or I'll just be giggling throughout the game. Either that or wincing if they use stereotypes and just slapped it in there to differentiate it from other FPS.

'An ancient Native American legend speaks of this weapon, Tommy. Spirits of old called it the Hypernanoblaster 3130. Spirits were... Very ahead of their time.'

"Portal technology adds a new dimension to gameplay, allowing enemies to appear out of thin air"

Comon is that really an innovation? We've had games where enemies appeared out of thin air forever.

Isn't the main character's name Tommy Hawk, or am I just making that one up? I feel pretty sure I'm not, and if that's the case, the writers instantly lose all credability if they're trying to go for a serious and dark story.

The game looks fun, but not for the story.

My issue is this...why does every game that uses the Doom 3 engine look the same? In all honesty somone could have labelled these Quake 4 shots and I would have believed them (depsite having played and beaten that game).

There's something about the Doom 3 normal maps that are so pronounced that every game looks the same.

Weird.

Games use Campbell's story structure more often than not. Gotta roll my eyes on this one

Absolutely. There's this dull metalic look to it.

We'll call it "Doom Metal" to play on death metal.

It seems that the creature design in every game using the engine is similar for some reason as well.
Can't they TRY to think of new looking monsters?

Oh well.
I am looking forward to this game though, the gameplay looks like it'll be a lot of fun, from the 20 minute long video I watched a few months back.

maybe its becuase its the same engine, which supports the same effects no matter what game content you plug into it...
