The international version of Gothic 1 is to be re-released! There were certain things (and I don't remember what anymore) that were censored for the American version.

While answering fan questions for the much anticipated Gothic 3, Michael Rüve, CEO of Piranha Bytes, recently revealed plans for a new edition of the still very popular Gothic 1 classic. This multilingual international edition (English/German) is already in the making and due for publication later this month. Stay tuned and check their webshop for new entries.
I am curious to what the new edition will have. If you have never played the game, or always wanted to but could never find it - here comes your chance.

Thanks to World of Gothic (http://www.worldofgothic.com) and RPGdot (http://www.rpgdot.com).

I definately would pick this up. I have no idea where my copy of Gothic has wandered off to and I haven't seen Gothic 2 anywhere around here (and I can even find a copy of Trauma Center, so it's not like I haven't looked).

I did enjoy Gothic 1 a few years back when I tried it. It's different, I'll concede that point, but very cool. If there were a battle of open ended RPG's, I'd probably say that Gothic was more enjoyable than Morrowind, if only because it was a bit smaller and had more focus on the story.

Uh oh. That's probably not the smartest thing to say around here...

Yes, I agree. Change the controls. On the first two. And make sure number three doesn't have the old, terrible controls.

I sometimes wonder if I could just submit any news item I wanted and as long as the word "Gothic" was in it, if it would be greenlighted.

I've been reading what many people call "terrible" controls, it's like saying it's "avatar doesn't move when you press a key" terrible. Let me set the record straight:

Gothic series controls are difficult because the expectation is the FPS movement scheme. The way the avatar moves in Gothic is different, it moves the way a normal person would move - that means backsteps are one at a time, sidesteps are slowers than forward steps, and definitely no insane strafe jumping (lol?).

The interface and the combat system are also different. Inventory is REALLY confusing and too complicated for its own good in G1, so in G2 it's streamlined. The combat system + avatar movement makes the gameplay tactical, vs. the traditional slash back-paddle insanely fast charge forward slash circle strafe jump slash slash...

It's too hard to get a handle on at first because we expect the FPS scheme, and cus... There's no tutorial to teach you their "based on reallife" controls! They expect you to learn it from trial & error, and that's what all the complaints are about. It's not that it's terrible, only that it's different and lacks easy-to-understand instructional tutorial.

Which BTW, I'll make sure to talk to them about in the interview. "Put a goddamned combat tutorial in there!"

Ahhh... the return of the classic that started it all.

Sometimes I think Gothic I is better than Gothic II. But I can't really compare the two...

Gothic 1 was extremely good and I still have it on my drives today. The fact that you could turn it into a GTA thugfest was incredibly enjoyable. You could beat everyone into submission in all of the camps to get the goodies. Only thing that sucked there was that you couldnt take their armor...

I am looking forward to seeing if they updated the graphics or introduced additional content.

my 2 cents...

Great explanations Liquidize 105. The fighting is almost more realistic then what happens in a FPS. Also, you can't drink potions in a fight - how come? Their answer is still the best - have you ever tried to reach into your backpack, pull out what you are looking for, open it (while holding a sword and fighting) and drink it - you can't tell the bad guy - hold on a second, I need to drink this potion so I can kill you - it wouldn't happen in real life. You stop watching the other person's weapon, and you are dead.

I also agree that it is better than Morrowind because it was more focused and smaller in land size.

Gothic I is the best sp rpg I've ever played, and I've played practically all pc rpg's. Gothic was the only pc rpg that made me feel like I was "in the game world". I think a lot of it had to do with the voice-overs. At the time, most rpg's were still text-based. I also like the combat system, where you had to time your swing of the sword to get the most out of your strike. I loved the part of the story where you're friends with the people of the old camp, and then side with the new camp, and when ever you're seen by memebers of the old camp, they attack you. :)

Is this the one where you could very quickly dupe raw meat and use it to buy everything in the game? I remember some rpg where you could kill a rat, use the meat on the fire and then take it off before it cooked and it would double your meat. It only took a couple minutes to get about a billion units of raw meat, and since they stacked in the inventory and the weight didn't matter you could use it to barter with. It was so funny.
