LotR: The Battle for Middle-Earth II takes part in the North where a battle is raging between Sauron's forces vs. elves and dwarves. It will be possible to create/customize your own hero, apart from known figures such as Arwin, and become more powerful as you progress in the game. While BFME was all land based, the sequel will also take the action on the sea, naval battles included.
As promised EA has released the singleplayer demo for The Battle for Middle-Earth II demo. The massive 1.3GB demo allows you to play as either the Goblins or Dwarves and feature a tutorial and single-player skirmish mode on two maps.

I think I'm going to start avoiding demos over 600MB on principle. And I'm only going that high because Psychonauts was five hundred and something.

And didn't install Starforce and God Knows What Rootkit (tm).
And didn't only have 10 minutes of gameplay.
And made me want to own the full game.

I played the Multiplayer demo for BFME II and I have to say it appeared extremely well polished. For those of you who played the first game, I've included a list of significant changes.
1) Unit Size - Gone are the 5 and six person units of troops found so nearly universally in the previous game, now each troop of soldiers comprised 20-30 individuals who fight as a cohesive unit.
2) Customizable heroes - you can create your own at the start of the game and advancement throughout the campaign's battles or take him online.
3) Improved terrain, structure, and unit graphics. Its still the same engine but heavily enhanced
4) Building System - Much more detailed than the previous system, allowing free-form construction throughout your base, wall construction, dozens of buildings, defense, and support options.
5) Races - there are 6 now. Dwarves, Goblins, Elves, Men of the West, Orcs, and the forces of Sauron
6) Naval battles - didnt' see much of this in the beta, but think Warcraft II: Tides of War but pretty.
7) Campaign Map - very little of this to see in the demo (except for screenshots) but the control of your forces from the campaign map is said to be MUCH more detailed than the previous game. With odes of Rome:Total War you will choose which regions to attack and conquer, which will yield individual benefits, you will have several armies in the field at a time, be able to construct certain "regional structures" to enhance that conquered region and perform diplomacy from this screen. This should add a nice (and yet not too daunting) strategic layer to the normal tatical fast-paced RTS experience.
All in all, what I saw made BFME II appear to have a great deal of potentional, downloading the single-player demo now.

Not interested in another Lord of the Rings game. I love the world, but EA has successfully made me sick of it.

Killing puppies is acceptable as long as you eat them afterwards.
Waste not, want not.

I'm totally pumped about this game. This game will own my soul (and my free time) for a good few months once it's released.

Ugh.. the file I got from Worthlessplaying is not a valid win32 file. Not the first time a huge demo file was corrupt from this site. :\

You might skip the demo if your having trouble with it. While it is a decent demo, it is only the goblins and dwarves, and a lot of frustrating units that don't like to actually attack.

Yep, game will be out in a couple weeks but for those that care about what to expect in the demo, dwarves are hardcore defenders and really have no offensive punch other than their heroes and goblins are hardcore zergfesters with almost no defense.
