The CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings, has stated that the company intends to take its streaming service to many platforms and that this will include, but will not be limited to, all gaming consoles should they be able to arrange deals in the future.

"Eventually we want to be on all the game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs," said Hastings in an interview. "So we are working in parallel with all of those efforts. Currently our Xbox [360] deal is exclusive and we haven't characterized it more than that."

If you have the dough, just build an HTPC. They don't have to be powerful (at all - most older computers can simply be converted), and after getting the right programs and proper configuration, it will truly be the heart of your entertainment center.

I was originally dying to have streaming Netflix come to my PS3, but now I couldn't give two shits.

Now fanboys who said Netflix was "no big deal" will be like, "SWEET!, CANT WAIT!"

While I understand that having Netflix Instant Play as a console-exclusive feature, I don't think it's a big deal if the PS3 and Wii and likewise given the same functionality. I mean, it's not like I'll no longer be able to play those movies/shows on my 360. What do I care if other people are brought on board the Netflix train? I think of Netflix's current position like I would any console exclusive title: "It's great that I have it, and it would be even greater if people who DIDN'T have the console I'm playing it on could be playing it as well."

When this was released for 360 I thought "meh, might use it".

Now, use it all the time. Wife loves it.

I'd imagine there is a little bit of demand for this to branch out.

Sony already said this. Sony says their customers want to own the content so adding Netlfix to the PS3 would only confuse them.

We've concentrated most of our efforts on our download service, both rentals and downloads of movies and TV shows. Our efforts will continue to be there, because our customers want to own the content...[In regards to the Netflix streaming on NXE,] there are certainly some positives for the Xbox 360. But there's also some confusion. It goes further into the argument of "owning the content" [versus renting or accessing it].

This has been a service my wife and I have both greatly enjoyed. It earned Netflix our business. Happily.

I broke down and got PlayOn on one of their sales (they have them like every other week-- use 'FALL10OFF' until 9/30 for $10 off right now). Between the PS3's inherent abilities, PlayOn, and PS3 Media server (http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/), I've covered all my media playback needs. PlayOn's Hulu support (not necessary on PS3, but really convenient) and plugin (http://www.playonplugins.com/) abilities are pretty nice too, and they're adding on remote file playback and various other media service support. Pretty solid all around buy for the person who doesn't want to build an HTPC but has a decent computer and some DLNA ready devices handy.

Exactly. Then you can watch Hulu and other stuff as well. Works great.

I PlayOn's Hulu support (not necessary on PS3, but really convenient)

It is necessary now (or some other workaround). Hulu is detecting the PS3 browser and blocking it, along with browsers from various mobile devices.
