According to Activision's Dan Rosenwig, the music game market is far from saturated even though music game sales are down 46% from last year. He claims that only 20% of the people who own consoles own a music game and the remaining 80% can still be captured.

“If you actually look at the consoles that are our there on a global basis, less than 20 per cent actually have a music game. So there’s the next 80 per cent that we have the opportunity to go after.”

From CNBC (http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?play=1&video=1269283998&__source=yahoo|headline|quote|video|&par=yahoo)via MCV (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/35857/Guitar-Hero-CEO-Music-games-market-not-saturated).

He said Guitar Hero 5 (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/guitarhero5?q=guitar%20hero%205) scored better than Beatles Rock Band (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/beatlesrockband?q=beatles%20rock%20band). Does he live in his own fantasy world?

Good luck, they'll have to release Elliott Smith Rock Band before they ever get me sucked in to that crap.

We're at market saturation... you can take one look at the GH5 setlist and see that, indeed, they're already stretching to getting bands into the main product.

Of course the guy from Activision is going to say that.

I mean, just because you have Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, Guitar Hero: 5, Band Hero, DJ Hero and Guitar Hero: Van Halen out in a single year, that doesn't mean they're over-saturated. Right Activision? Right!

Maybe the remaining 80% - me included - don't WANT any music games? Even if I did want any, there are already so many of them around, I'd hardly know which one to buy.

It's over saturated, there's no question about that. More than two of these games in a year is a lot.

No, you want it... Activision won't be happy till you own one of these games.

Wow.

I bet he's thinking also that 100% of the people out there don't have a direct to tv plug in music game also. Huge market!

I'm still buying them.

From Activision?

I guess there had to be someone doing it...

I still occasionally enjoy my music games, but I have to admit the novelty has pretty much worn off until they do something as innovative to the genre as Rock Band did. That being said, I haven't bought a music game SINCE the original Rock Band, even though we still play it quite a bit on our Thursday night dinner with friends. We've more than gotten our $180 worth out of that game.

He said Guitar Hero 5 scored better than Beatles Rock Band. Does he live in his own fantasy world?

I'm pretty sure he said GH5 OUTSOLD RB:Beatles. Though your fantasy world hypothesis is still probably true.

Actually he said the GH:5 was the highest rated music game, which means yes he thinks that GH:5 got better reviews than Rock Band Beatles.

Just compare videos to how well they handled the Beatles, and how awfully they handled Kurt Cobain. One company knows it's stuff, the other couldn't care less.

If you think that Kurt Cobain defines guitar hero, you obviously don't understand what the game is supposed to be.

You should watch the video before trying to be snarky.
If you actually look at Guitar Hero 5 reviews, are the best reviews we've ever had and out-reviewed every game in the category.

Try again next time! :D

Kurt Cobain doesn't define Guitar Hero, his prescence and what they've done with it show that Activision really doesn't respect or give a shit other than to sell more and make more money.

Yeah, all companies tend to want to make more money, some just handle it with a little more class and respect.

Wasn't being snarky, Mr. Defensive. I was thinking of this article (http://www.gamasutra.com/news/production/?story=25302) that was on the frontpage of Evil Avatar sometime last week.

Activision told the Financial Times that the release of The Beatles: Rock Band failed to impact GH5's momentum: "It did not affect our sales," said Guitar Hero division head Dan Rosensweig, who claimed a four-to-one sales ratio in favor of his game versus Beatles in the U.S. -- and nine-to-one in "other markets," according to the report.

Same guy, very similar comment/context.

I like guitar hero 5 over Beatles. The former is too easy and very short.
