Or was it an underwater bunker? I'll definitely pick up a copy of GI, read it, and then put it back. Can't wait!

That is not an under-water shot. For one thing, water doesn't stream off peoples draped limbs underwater (look at the guys hands) and also, the girls limbs would be floating not hanging. Just an observation. Otherwise, he certainly does look like someone Scooby Doo has run up against.

Looks like it's under water to me, artistic interpretation of water streaming or not. Perhaps they are not portrayed submerged in water, but the overall scene is under water.

Also it clearly says "In a world beneath the ocean."

Edit: 360 posts. If you're reading this Microsoft, you can make the check payable to "Cash"

Well while they don't look to be IN water, they certainly do look like they're UNDER it. That looks like water is streaming down over them. As if whatever they're in, it's leaking.

What about the fizzing? I don't know what the droplets are doing there, and frankly I don't care! :D

Man Bill's gotta set me up for that interview now that the cat's outta the bag.

I know, the fizzing was puzzling me for a bit (that there's both dripping and what looks like fizzing) but it looks like that's some water splashing up from the streams that are falling down.

As in, it looks like the lunk in the suit is carrying the kid through some sort of structurally-flawed underwater tunnel.

Looks like "In a world beneath the ocean a paradise was born then humanity's search for perfection became an obsession" to me. Not sure about the "then"

The most interesting part from the magazine:

360 and PC ONLY

Please note that they put "360" first, then "PC".

Another Deus Ex 2 in the making?

Ah, yeah, I just meant that the "then" seemed awkwardly placed.

I'm pretty psyched about this game. The only game I would like to see more is Fallout 3 co-designed by Obsidian and Troika. I'll settle for whatever Bethesda ends up putting out though, and in the meantime Bioshock is near the top of my list.

System Shock 2 had it's problems, but did anyone seriously dislike it? No? I didn't think so. AWESOME. ;)

I hope it has to do with the myth of Atlantis and, oh yeah, they should hyper-stylize the graphics to immitate the old movie "20,000 leagues under the sea." That would be pretty neat.

Or Thief 3.

I'd definately get this for the PC, assuming I can get my PC upgraded sometime in the next year. I love Irrational and this is definately a game on my radar.

If it's set underwater, cool. It could be set at an indoor wave pool and I'm sure they'd make it awesome.

So endeth Spig's fanboy post to Irrational Games.

Irrational Games were responsible for SWAT 4 and System Shock 2, right? That being the case, they could bump map a turd and I'd buy it. ;)

I'm interested in any spiritual successor to SS2/ DX but I have my doubts as to the simultaneous PC+console development.

Still, 1 day purchase - Irrational NEVER made wrong.

This is why I subscribe to GI. They get the best exclusive previews and they always have tons of screen shots. The writeup on the next-gen Medal of Honor last month was awesome. I look forward to the big Bio-Shock news. I just re-installed SS2 last night and I'm gonna actually try to get through it this time.

Don't forget that they are also the geniuses (genii?) behind the fantabulous Freedom Force series (must reinstall FF2 and actually finish it this weekend!)

Very true. I may reinstall the first Freedom Fighters next week and play through it... Hell, Irrational really know how to make quality games.

For what it's worth:
Someone has the magazine. heres what it says.

BioShock
- Core gameplay centered on player choice and customization
- Game takes place in the early 60s
- Dev's main goal is total immersion in the story
- you wake up in the ocean surrounded by debris and your first goal is survival
- something about creatures in the ocean discovered by scientists
- "We're creating a world for to be in. What you do is up to you, and you have to live with your choices."
- One of your skills is agility and it makes you run faster
- most upgrades will affect weapons
- you can create weapons and items
- you can hack stuff by being an engineer
- A walkthrough is useless - you take the game where you want it to go (Sounds really open ended)
- bioShock holds many mysteries
- Xbox 360 and PC - O N L Y http://www.ga-forum.com/showpost.php?p=2744100&postcount=52

I can understand your anger about Deus Ex 2 but you cannot realy compare the situation. It is not like the 360 is a low spec PC (maybe in 3 years you can moan).

Heh, if only it was because Xbox was low spec... but it was deeper than that - it started in the design stage :(

Of course Irrational guys are smarter than Harvey Smith :)

It's compromises on interface and functionality with a look to supporting a console joypad that worry me. Everything in Deus Ex 2 was so dumbed down.

Yay for Bio-Shock! I am actually pretty confident that this will be great, as others have said Irrational doesn't make bad games.

But it is a little scary, the 360 and pc thing. I agree that Deus Ex 2 pissed all over the first one, but heres hoping Irrational can pull it off...

I thought DX2 sucked, but Thief 3 did an excellent job of being a dual PC/XBOX release. Obviously with the engine change from Thief 1 & 2 to the one used in 3, some of the original feel was lost, but I believe the new engine was well within the spirit.

Looking Glass Studios did Thief 1 & 2, as well as System Shock 1 & 2. They went out of business, but quite a few of them are at Irrational: including Ken Levine (story) and Eric Brosius (sound) and quite a few others..

My newly upgraded system will allow me to play Bioshock in SPLENDOR!

Hmm . . . the "open world" approach can be a problem at times. Without a clear story and goals, players tend to wander about and not figure out what they're supposed to do next (e.g. Morrowind). Still, it can also be done very well, mixing story with a sandbox to play around in (e.g. GTA3).

Just that artwork alone has piqued my interest. Though it does make me wish the game wouldn't be first-person and instead allow me to see my character while I'm doing whatever it is one does underwater. There's something that's just more visceral for me about the third-person view.

Now, did the guys from Irrational also work on Bioforge? I know it was made by Origin, but didn't a lot of the people from Irrational and Looking Glass work at Origin at one point, or am I just dreaming?

If this is a spiritual sequel to Bioforge, I'm even more exciting.

As for the DX2/Thief 3 comments, DX2 did suffer on both ports. Thief 3 was decent on the Xbox but really needed to be played on the PC with all of the texture enhancements and such to feel true to the series.

I believe that the Irrational peeps have said that it's a spiritual sequel to System Shock 2.

I loved Bioforge, btw. Especially beating that one blue guy with his own arm that I picked up off the floor.

Bioforge was the best! So far ahead of anything out at the time. But the hardware demands and step difficulty made it hard to sell.

The story was very original and cinematic. It sounds like BioShock does have an original refreshing plot too and I loved System Shock 2. Can't wait!

Bioforge was pretty good, but the control was subpar... It would be great if we got a sequel with current control interface (i.e. Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia).

And System Shock 2 is pure bliss. or terror. Scariest game ever. It made me want to cry of sheer lonelines in that huge freaking ship. I'm 100% sure they can pull off a top experience. BioShock is my #1 game to wait. Even more than Zelda.

When you "export" a turd it comes with a premade normal and specular map.
Sometimes you can get some strange distortion around the edges

Word, son. I hate ports mainly because great games are in part developed around the controls they will use.

Mason

DX:IW was mainly a crime due to streamlining away a lot of the original's design. The controls were stupid in the inventory, but that alone didn't crapify it.

I'm curious about their claim of non-linearity. With a finite amount of resources on a title, you have to balance between length, quality, and nonlinearity. No game gets nonlinearity for free (two paths is twice the effort for the same amount of player experience), so we'll have to see how they manage to balance things.
