UFO2000 - X-COM multiplayer:
Multiplayer is something many a X-COM fan wished for when the game was first released. The UFO2000 team took it upon them to provide what the developers didn't, and everyone is encouraged to check it out! You can find the official site here (http://ufo2000.sourceforge.net/).

Project Xenocide still going strong:
Near the end of 2002 a group of dedicated fans started a project to recreate the feel and spirit of X-COM. It's been a long bumpy road, but the project is still going strong. You can find the official site here (http://www.projectxenocide.com/).

Pocket UFO for Pocket PC and PC:
Did you know that you can play X-COM on your Pocket PC? No? Time to explore then! Pocket UFO is a remake of X-COM: UFO Defense (UFO: Enemy Unknown) that you can download for free. And in case you're not the lucky owner of a Pocket PC, you can play it on the PC as well! Read more about it at the official site (http://www.smksoftware.ru/pufo.shtml).

Even more X-COM related projects?
Sure thing! There are several other excellent projects in development, and you can find a nice list made by Zombie at StrategyCore.co.uk (http://www.strategycore.co.uk/xcom/pg/links)

I don't really know how this is "news".

Either way, it makes me smile. <3 X-COM.

Odd how I was going to say nice post.

Is it only news if everyone else has it as well?

This is a post to remind people that X-COM lives. It's more important than any other news you could post here! ;)

Seriously though, I think a lot of people appreciate having all the X-COM related projects listed. There are very few people that know of all these projects :)

On a related note, Fileplanet has X-COM: UFO Defense (UFO: Enemy Unknown) available for download. Instructions on how to run it in Windows XP can be found here (http://www.strategycore.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=3696).

Thanks for the linkage, I like the idea of X-COM. Anyone thought about making a better UI and tutorials?

Whatever, this was a damn cool post on a slow day.

Was X-Com stupid hard, or did I just really suck at it?

Geeyah. Remembering the first time I played this game. Didn't realize the aliens could invade your base. Woops.

First one I played was Terror from the Deep. I got a lot of mileage out of that. I think these links may keep me busy for awhile on a rainy weekend :)

I have an urge to introduce some X-Com ideas into my NWN2 project. Fantasy X-Com. It might work.

I would love nothing more than to provide you with that (and host the lovely game at StrategyCore). Problem is that X-COM hasn't been declared freeware yet, and the whole "abandonware" thing is a little shady. I assume Fileplanet has an agreement with the current brand owner, and that this is the reason they host it. That being said, most good Underdogs should be able to find alternative download sources...

I love the pocket UFO on windows. I just wish it had a way to double size the client window. I'm squinting here!

Why does it matter? It's an unpaid subscription. Make a Gmail account just for registering for a fileplanet account, then log on, download X-Com for free and legal, then never return. I see no problem with that.

I've been thinking about trying to make a fantasy x-Com for awhile, i just have no artistic ablity what so ever

the origional xcom was hard, but if you were good at the research and resource management you could use that to greatly help the tactical side

Secret was to spend all your money as fast as you can, because the first few battles can be some of the toughest, and a tank vs plasma gun is way better than a pistol

Just so you know, the Fileplanet XCOM has problems with randomly crashing so save your game often. Some systems have better luck with the version running around at the home of.. the .. you know..

Starts with a U. ends with a nderdogs. You've been there before.

EDIT: For my fellow UFO: Defense fans, you'll also need a CPU slower. Find one at the FAQ page here (http://www.the-underdogs.org/guidewin.php) (ctrl+f, search for "turbo").

Happy hunting!

It is hard, but eventually it's like riding a bike. You just play.

1. I have four players that are over ten years old. I've just never done the last mission with them. I used to have five. Back in 2001, I cried. I copy the saves from computer to computer. They are natural (ie not edited).

2. This game as well as Tie Fighter have been slipstreamed into my Windows install CD. They are essentially a part of my operating system.

3. My version of the game has the Soundblaster AWE drivers. Makes the intro so much better. I have it on 3 1/2 disk, CD-ROM, and the Windows COllectors edition with all three (including that bastardized 3rd one).

4. I still have the strategy guide. Every page has been dog eared.

5. I <3 Microprose. Curse you, Electronic Arts.

6. Slaughter, you are the man.

I think you meant:
It's like riding a bike, you shoot a few aliens and then get fucked in the ass by chrisilyds.

Yeah. There we go. Fixed.

IIRC there was a buggy release of XCom that had selectable difficulty levels, but the game ignored your selection and made you play on PMITA difficulty every time. If you had that version, yeah, it's stupid hard.
Chryssalids the first time you touch down is not the default difficulty.

But PocketPC XCom? Multiplayer XCom? My pants feel tight.

I continue to be amazed how no one has been able to capture what made X-Com so great. The recent UFO games were just a travesty - the only reason anyone cared about them was because of the greatness of X-Com.

X-Com was a difficult game in the sense you really had to keep ahead of the curve with not losing too many guys on a mission, capturing enough alien technology to advance and then not overexpand and risk an assault on an unprotected base.

I really enjoyed all three of the original, with the second one a little less so because of the excessively large maps that just encouraged you to save your game at the start, run a guy in to find the power core or whatever it was so you'd know which way to go, and then reload and take your squads there.

Ah, nostalgia.

Apocalypse had some good things going for it too. It tends to get the short end of the stick, and I think it's at least partially undeserved.

In particular, I really liked being able to punish those who turn against XCom. The original game would be reatly enhanced by adding that feature. if I could raid, say, Brazil for supplies/retribution when they cut funding and sign on with the aliens... I'd probably spend more time initiating city terror missions than the aliens would.

Fear will keep the other countries in line... *mwuhahahaa*

Funny you say that. I would protect all the countries but Russia. I don't know why. Just did at the time.

ahh i miss the days where your best guy could get hit with a snap shot from 3 miles away in full body armor, then spin around and die

or the HR Geiger alien walks for 5 minutes because they have so much in their turn, gnaw on your brain 8 times then zombify you

CLANKCLANKCLANKCLANKCLANKCLANKCLANKCLANKCLANKCLANK CLANKCLANKCLANKCLANK
GNAWGNAWGNAWGNAWGNAWGNAWGNAWGNAW
"HULGH!!"
<zombie>

same thing applies to the mind control guys

lastly, i fondly remember walking one square away to an alien and doing the tri shot point blank, missing all 3, then having the alien plug me right in the eyes, instantly killing me.

goddamn I loved that game.

i need a pocket pc.

Have you guys tried any of the remakes yet? I'm curious how close they are to the original. It would be nice to have a modernized version with better graphics and no need for the cpu speed limiter.
