Activision sends along word that the first DLC for Guitar Hero 5 is now available.

The three-song AFI Track Pack is now available for Guitar Hero 5 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii. Joining Guitar Hero 5 on-disc favorite “Medicate,” gamers will also be able to rock out to “Beautiful Thieves” before it’s released on the band’s latest album Crash Love, set to launch later this month. The AFI Track Pack also features one of their most popular songs, “Girl’s Not Grey,” from their 2003 album Sing the Sorrow and the third single from Decemberunderground, “The Missing Frame.”

The AFI Track Pack is now available via Xbox LIVE Marketplace for 440 Microsoft Points, from the PlayStation Store for $5.49 and the Wii Shop Channel for 550 Wii Points. The three songs are also now available as single downloads for Xbox 360 for 160 Microsoft Points, PlayStation 3 for $1.99 and Wii for 200 Wii Points each.

Seems a bit soon for DLC. Why were these songs not on the disc?

Because then you wouldn't be able to buy them separately.

could be it's because it is a crap band that no one has heard of?

Or maybe it's just the way development plans work ... they got permission to use it too late in the cyle to get it into the gold build, so they made it DLC instead.

Or they wanted to make sure to beat RB: Beatles to the street....

The perfect answer to the rhetorical question.

It is funny, the more time that goes by the less DLC I'm buying. Getting squeezed for every penny is starting to get old.

RockBand 2 had DLC the week it released. I was actually surprised that guitar hero took a week or two off.

DING DING DING, we probably have a winner.

Not every developer on a title is working on the game up until the day it ships. Some of them, like Artists and Level Designers, tend to end earlier then the programmers. So instead of just kicking their asses out on the street you get them working on DLC, while the programmers fix the bugs.

Well for one, the music games rarely (or never) put 4 tracks from the same artist on any retail release. Also, they have a full team dedicated to just DLC, separate from the retail disc team. I'm sure they have stockpiles of more DLC ready to go, and they just release it slowly over time. I would understand questioning the release time of DLC for things like new levels and game modes released for a game within days, however music games are more of a platform like itunes than a typical game. So we should expect things like this to be common. Yeah, it's kinda lame, but if they were to put every bit of music that was "ready to go" on the disc, I wouldn't be surprised if the game had a couple hundred songs. I'm not saying I like it, I'm just saying this kind should be expected at this point.

There is no "Rock Band 2 DLC" since all DLC is fully compatible with Rock Band 1, so it's a bit different. Rock Band DLC has been released weekly for almost two years so it was just following the usual release schedule. But Harmonix was guilty of this when Rock Band 1 was released.

The DLC situation is out of control lately. Every f-ing week there are additional songs, costumes, characters, levels, etc. to download for multiple games...not to mention all the f-ing exclusive pre-order DLC that is being attached to games these days. They are nickel and diming gamers to death.

That is what I'm talking about. It is getting close to the point where I will not purchase any DLC at all due to the way every $60 game has $30 in DLC associated with it.

That is the same thing that is preventing me from going to Gamestop. The more titles ended up with some kind of a Gamestop exclusive the less I wanted to shop there. When it was 1 title a year I was like, "Oh, what the heck I'll shop there to get the exclusive item." Now that every title has some kind of Gamestop exclusive associated with it I won't shop there at all.

Crap band is opinion, but a band that no one has heard of? In 2003 you couldn't avoid this band if you watched MTV or listened to any Top 40 or modern rock stations. Shit, it was ranked number 77 on the October 2006 issue of Guitar World magazine's "List of the 100 Greatest Guitar Albums of All Time".

Not to mention they have a million selling album and another album that is almost there. On top of that, they already have songs in other Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles.

Saying no one has heard of them seems a little off.

Did we ask this of RB:Beatles when they -announced- day 1 DLC weeks before the game even released?
