There was an event for Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer last night where it got shown off to the press and Giantbomb (http://www.giantbomb.com/news/hands-on-with-modern-warfare-2s-multiplayer/1685/) was there, taking some notes on how its different over Modern Warfare. They've got a pretty nice and to-the-point bulleted list of newness you'll find in MW2. Here's the first few, so head over to their site (http://www.giantbomb.com/news/hands-on-with-modern-warfare-2s-multiplayer/1685/) to get the full deal:

Customizable Kill Streaks. Possibly the most anticipated new feature is a pretty darn cool one. You now unlock kill streaks as you rank up, and though you can still only take three into a match with you at one time, you can at least have some control over how many kills you need to rack up to use them. Some of the kill streak rewards require three, four, five, six, seven, nine kills… In addition to old favorites like the UAV, there are things like a care package that's parachuted in and grants you a random upgrade; stationary sentry guns you can put down to beef up defenses, especially in objective-based games; and of course the AC130 gunship, which requires 11 kills to use (and which, consequently, I did not see). Best of all, it seems like kill streaks stack, since I was able to use my five-kill Predator missile, then immediately activate the four-kill care package right afterwards.
Death Streaks. Death streaks? Yes, you will now be rewarded for dying too many times in a row, in an effort to prevent frustration for those just getting into Modern Warfare 2. The only two in the demo I played were Painkiller, which starts you with a triple health boost after you're killed three times without making any kills of your own, and Copycat, which lets you use the loadout and perks of the last guy who killed you for one life.
Secondary Weapons Replace Pistols. No more piddly sidearms. Well, not quite true; pistols are still in there if you want them, but you can pass up the lo' Desert Eagle in favor of tactical shotguns, automatic machine pistols, and other nice gear to augment your primary rifle. All these secondary weapons can take attachments just like the primaries can, so if you want to throw a suppressor or digital camo on your shotgun, more power to ya.
Fancy New Equipment Instead of Grenades. Toss out your frag grenades, if you want, and replace them with some nifty gear that serves a variety of other purposes. Perhaps you would prefer Semtex timed sticky explosives? How about some throwing knives? The most abstract but perhaps coolest piece of equipment I saw was the tactical insertion, which looks like a typical flare when you throw it down. In practice, it acts as a mobile, single-use spawn point, so anytime you're moving into a heated area, throw one down and that's where you'll restart if you die.

Definately the next game I'll be buying, and I fully anticipate it will suck up the rest of my 2009 gaming time, and chew into 2010 as well.

Well I was happy about all of that until it got to the "tactical insertion".

First of all, I know this is a game and not real life, but it is grounded pretty well in realism. This items breaks that immersion.

Secondly, I hope I'm playing defense and a dozen people drop those things, it'll let me know exactly where to aim my next shot.

...Painkiller, which starts you with a triple health boost after you're killed three times without making any kills of your own...
Triple health? As in 300hp instead of 100hp? Isn't it a bit rad? 50% more maybe... 100% more max.

I hope that a well placed RPG or Semtex will do more than 300 dmg.

Even though, can't wait to give this game a try!

it's worth it to keep in mind that hundreds of people are testing this stuff day and night, so it's safe to say it all works out great

I know I'm late to the scene, but I just beat Modern Warfare 1 two days ago (borrowed it from my awesome Brother-in-Law). I can't wait to play the follow up to the game.

I think that people who do defense will use it but because of this weakness it won't have much use offensively.

Sounds like the game is making a big jump toward the arcade side of things. More Unreal Tournament than Call of Duty. I can see why they were thinking about dropping the CoD name from the title. With a more realism game like Operation Flashpoint: DR on the way I think it will be an OK move.

I'm not sure I agree. With making kill-streaks customizable and personal, I imagine it's going to slow down the pace of even deathmatch. People will be more cautious about running around and throwing their life away if they're really trying to use their spiffy unlocks.

or they'll be destroyable. Making it worth scouting out a spot to hide them.

beating people down with the riot shield sounds awesome.. i cant wait to bum rush the snipers

this will be a good excuse to stop playing cod4 for the last 1.5 years.. was exited about WAW but after about lvl 40 i gave up due to annoying maps, tanks, and weapons..

If this is the direction they are going to be headed in, I will be passing up on this crapfest.

Same here, total garbage. Looks like we have sunk to a new low haven't we activation. We are now rewarding players with 3x HP that play poorly Because we will be "Frustrating" the players by requiring them take the time to gain some "Skill" at a video game.

The skill gap between a casual player and a skilled gamer has now been reduced to almost nothing, your teams doing well and owning you say? Well we will just give the other team 3x HP and Juggernaut them out and take care of that pesky thing called "Skill" so they can keep buying our DLC. The Shows over folks, the casual turds have taken over........

whatever dude.. thats so closeminded i dont even know where to begin.

i know for a fact that really good FPSer friends get totally turned off of cod4 and waw cause of the style change and the fact that they basically get fucked in the ass by the veterans who know every nuance of a map and pummel them with airstrikes and helicopters to the point that they literally dont play the game.

This provides a good opportunity to at least get peoples feet wet and hell if your team is getting fucked like i know mine does most of the time, this is a good rebounder against the constant perk and spawn site killing.

I consider myself a decent player and there are times when the teams are so unbalanced that i couldnt win a game for the entire night. Yes even gold star guys would be sub .500 due to the constant barrage of gangbangings.

I personally will relish in the joy frustrating a spawn sniper camper.

Even skilled players will benefit. period.

Because, you know, dying and respawning over and over are realistic.
