EVE ONLINE REACHES THE 100,000 SUBSCRIBER MARK

CCP Games Maintains Strong Momentum in the MMOG Industry

Reykjavik, Iceland – February 7, 2006 – CCP Games, an independent producer of massively-multiplayer online games, today announced that its flagship product EVE Online has reached 100,000 active game subscribers and is maintaining the robust subscription growth trend of the past year. This milestone for CCP Games follows the announcement of EVE Online being voted Best Game in the 2005 MMORPG.COM Reader’s Choice Awards, and the release of its Red Moon Rising edition to subscribers.

“The momentum of EVE Online is accelerating globally,” said Magnus Bergsson, CMO of CCP Games. “The growth of the game’s popularity within the MMOG genre has become especially evident in highly competitive markets such as the US and Western Europe, and we fully expect to carry that momentum into China’s game market later this year.”

EVE Online has distinguished itself within the industry by setting the world PCU (Peak Concurrent Users) record in a persistent, single game universe, currently at 23,178 users. The game also utilizes a time-based leveling system, in which the progression of player abilities is independent of the time spent in-game.

“The key to success in this industry is providing content that promotes immersive longevity,” said Nathan Richardsson, Senior Producer of EVE Online. “Time-based skill advancement evens the playing field between new and veteran players, and our model of providing free game expansions to subscribers ensures that the player experience always stays fresh and continues to evolve.”

Later this month, CCP Games will complete the implementation of a total overhaul of EVE Online’s hardware infrastructure, featuring 64-bit architecture provided by IBM. The state-of-the-art hardware will more than double the capacity of the existing game universe and provide significant improvements to in-game performance, particularly during peak server usage.

“Our ongoing partnership with IBM and investment in their technology reflects our commitment to the single game universe standard that has put us here,” said Hilmar Pétursson, CEO of CCP Games. “To meet the increased demands of a rapidly growing subscriber base, we will continue to scale our infrastructure to allow for future growth and to continue providing a high-quality gaming experience for all of our customers.”

They are doing so good, that they didn't want to run any advertising a second month in a row - they needed to upgrade their servers before getting any more subscribers!

Thanks to everyone who took advantage of the 14-day trial through the ad right here on Evil Avatar.com. It is great when you guys support our advertisers!

(I'm still playing EVE Online, I just finished training a skill that took 9 days to train!)

It is really exceptional that all 100,000 of those people are all in the same world. There is only one server so you don't have to worry about joining the world where your friends are. You are all in the same world. Wow divides you up into little worlds with much fewer people available to interact with. Plus, since there is only one world, you don't have your secrets ruined by seeing another server accomplish something before yours does, like what happened recently with those gates opening and those monsters coming out and messing s#!t up.

I bet they call those 30+ day skills in the dev offices a "guarantee skill"

...meaning that they just guaranteed a month subscription. Unless, game days are different from real days.

I just tried this game out last night. Good depth.

Considering that Star Wars Galaxies probably has only about 1/4 that number of Subscribers, it is pretty impressive.

Sure, WoW's way ahead of that, but this is still cool that Eve has got that many people and is still getting more as they go. Very cool.

Yeah, I'm waiting for the upgrades before I kick off.

And somewhere, right now, 100,000 players are training their skills up while offline. Yay.

Its good to hear this. While WoW is the most popular MMO at this point, I find it too similar to past games for me to stick with it for any extended period of time. With Eve I get to play an entirely different game.

Its also nice to play a game where PvP actually has an impact on how you play the game, and adds depth instead of a grind or annoyance.

The game was just not for me, I am not into open endednes where I make my own story. I like the story to be told to me and to particpate in the story.

But cheers to CCP, they just spent a boatload of cash on new server hardware that is going to put them on the top 50 supercomputers list or some such, and thier using AMD.

That wouldn't surprise me at all, considering the big middle-finger SOE has given their customers every step of the way in recent years. I still laugh at people who compain about Blizzard, sure they have issues and are FAR from perfect, but you have to get up pretty early in the morning to even approach the level of customer service mediocrity SOE has achieved.

The game is so complicated, they should offer a certificate test. Every time I remember playing the tutorial, I keep thinking of installing FreeBSD on my 5 year old IBM ThinkPad.

The fact that they've has such a steady increase is what's so darn remarkable. Maybe I'll need to give it a try sometime. Over reading break, perhaps...
