Here are the games that made the cut for handheld Game of the Year. Vote for your favorites.

I had to go with MK:DS. First, it's Nintendo's first online game and the introduction of Nintendo WiFi. Second, it's freaking Mario Kart online - something we've been waiting for forever. Third, even the single player game is extremely well done with a great selection of racers, karts, courses, unlockables and game modes. Finally, imho it's the best Mario Kart game in the series, which is no small feat. All the games on the list are great, but MK:DS is just too much fun.

It is interesting that the only serious choices are DS games. Sure GTA is cool, and I really like it, but Lumines is a novelty. Animal Crossing and Mario Kart should feel like retreads, but instead they feel completely fresh and excellent. Same for Castlevania - just a new version with some added stuff, kind of evolution from Aria of Sorrow, yet it is just completely excellent from end to end.

I only played lumines and GTA:LCS from that list. I don't own a DS yet(I'll get a DS lite) so I haven't played meteos and Castlevania yet but I'm sure I'll enjoy them.

My favorite handheld games of the year:
1. Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
2. Lumines
3. Burnout Legends

LCS wasn't bad, and it's really fun with the cheats, but it just wasn't as awesome as those 3 games are. LCS I feel like I have to work to like it for some reason.

It's funny that the games on that list can be swapped out for other games in the same sort of genre. #1 can be swapped out for Castlevania, #2 could be meteos, and #3 could be any racing game, more than likely Mario Kart, Wipeout, or Burnout. All 3 racing games cater to different types. I fucking love the Burnout series more than I should.

Edit: I voted lumines since Zelda isn't on there for some reason.

As much as I liked Mario Kart, Castlevania got the most love from me this year.

I was surprised Zelda didn't make the list either, but only one person brought it up as their favorite. These games were always mentioned.

Yeah I'd have to go with Castlevania, with the Minish Cap not too far behind. Mario Kart was excellent, It'd probably be my #1 if the on-line component was better implemented.

And though I don't own a PSP, I've played a fair bit of Lumines, and was just never able to get into it.

I think Animal Crossing and GTA were kind of mentioned just as a, "Oh yeah, these were good games", but they're not on par with Castlevania, Mario Kart, Lumines, Meteos, and Zelda. You know what I mean? Everyone knows they're great games, but not game of the year quality.

Mario Kart, but it's the only one I've played in the selections above. After all, I've only been a handheld user for a month.

As much as I love Castlevania DS, you can't argue with multiplayer Mario Kart.

That was my favorite game until I stumbled upon your likeness. I then threw the game out. You could argue that I could trade the game in for money, but nobody should have to play a game that has fitabits likeness in it.

And how, pray tell, did you uncover my likeness? Cos I haven't even been able to do so.

What is this Castlevania everyone is speaking of? :)

Even though I now HATE the company which ruined my Christmas, I had to go with Lumines. It's the game I had the most fun with last year.

Then Sony decided to sell movies and damage our company computers...

I think it's hard to say any port could be considered as "game of the year". That takes out everything except yet another Castlevania sequel, Lumies and Meteos. Out of those, you've GOT to pick Lumines.

Don't get me wrong, Castlevania was a great game, so don't bother flaming. I'd still like to keep this category for something you really haven't done before.

I think everyone woke up and smelt the...dogs...with Nintendogs. Let's face reality.

Got to pick Lumines? Noooo way. I picked Meteos, although I would've picked Mario Kart DS if I had it. That's not really a port, even though it shares a lot in common with the previous Kart games, so judging by your treatment of the Castlevania sequel, you wouldn't've picked that either. :)

I got the DS for my son for Christmas and so far Nintendogs is his only non GBA game for it, but he is in love with the dogs, and so are I think most of the audience for the handhelds. Strictly sale numbers I really doubt any of the others can touch Nintendogs.

Was GTA that bad? I am surprised it didn't get more votes. It got phenomenal reviews. Is this just a case of all the elements being there but the final package is just missing that special something? How has it been selling?

Mario Kart has to get the win. It has so much gameplay. It is one of those games that you can play for years. And with the online play you get constantly changing games. Really a top notch package.

And in response to Salesmunn,
Salesmunn: "I think it's hard to say any port could be considered as 'game of the year'. That takes out everything except yet another Castlevania sequel, Lumies and Meteos. Out of those, you've GOT to pick Lumines.

I think you are confusing your terms. The other games weren't ports. Some were sequels, or prequels. And saying that derivative puzzle games have not been "done" before seems a little crazy. You are being rather selective in your criteria. But I guess that is the best way to validate your choice as being the only right one.

I couldn't tell you how it has been selling, but I can tell you about my short experience with it.

It definately had the feel of GTA3 on the PS2. I was pretty impressed with the quality of the writing on the introduction and just how similar it felt to playing one of the latest GTA's on the consoles.

What I didn't like was the really floaty control. Granted, I didn't play for an incredibly long time, but given how much time I've spent playing the PS2 versions of the GTA games, the PSP version really felt, well, floaty. I couldn't get a good feel for the analogue stick and was either running every which way or else crashing my car into buildings at ever turn.

Supposedly it's better once you get used to the controls, but I couldn't be bothered. My brother seemed to like it though so I just congratulated him on having a game for his PSP and went back to my DS :)

I think it's hard to say any port could be considered as "game of the year". That takes out everything except yet another Castlevania sequel, Lumines and Meteos. Out of those, you've GOT to pick Lumines. So you're saying that only original IP's should be concidered for game of the year, regardless of platform?

Animal Crossing and Mario Kart were not ports. They were the true sequels to their respective series. They just happened to come out on a handheld instead of the home console. Same with GTA:LCS. It is a standalone game in the GTA series. Again, it just happens to be on the PSP instead of the PS2. That's a common mistake with some of these titles. You think they're just a port until you put the time into them and realize that they're full-fledged games in their own right.

I'd be understandably upset if the Final Fantasy IV remake was up there. It's a great remake, but I couldn't concider it game of the year.

And while I love Lumines, I'd have to give my vote to Meteos. It's fun, fast, addictive and has so many unlockables I could scream. Lumines is very slick and has the Rez pedigree, but I just enjoyed Meteos more.

I still think that Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time, Advance Wars: Dual Strike or Phoenix Wright should be on the list, but what can ya do?

I loved Mario Kart DS, but I had to give the edge to Animal Crossing as it will be a game that I play a little bit each day for the next few years just like I did with the original.

Animal Crossing - It isn't a game, it's a lifestyle.

I guess my vote goes to Castlevania: DoS. Still, this closed poll sucks. Have an open vote methinks.

As for GTA: Liberty City Stories...it's been selling very well. I think it was on the top ten on the NPD list for a while. It's a fun, but frustrating game. Plus it doesn't go beyond what other GTA games have done. It's a great game for sure though. But I think the reason it didn't get very many votes is because it's too similar too other GTA games.

Yeah. 32 tracks, online play, mission modes, how dull.

I meant not much to the gameplay. The content is there. Round and around and around and around and around and around and around.

I have gone through all the missions and beaten 50,100 and 150cc and played a bit of multiplayer. I said it was fun. Kind of like Pong.

Mind you Advance Wars: DS, Meteos and Animal Crossing are all pretty damn awesome as well.

Right.

There's still a difference. A big one. I'm not going to get into this, I was expecting someone to try it, but the logic is flawed and the only outcome I see is belligerence.

Where the fuck are the GBA games in general? GBA had a very healthy life in 2005. It still has two major titles hitting soon too, and are sure to be fantastic. (Excluding FF5 and FF6, because they still haven't been confirmed or dated.)

So anyways, without the following, the poll fails:

Final Fantasy 4
Mario Power Tennis
Gunstar Super Heroes
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
WarioWare Twisted
Riviera: The Promised Land
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

And so is your logic. There is a lot more to Mario Kart then going around in circles.
