Gamespy (http://pc.gamespy.com/) has a preview up (http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/huxley/686013p1.html) of the PC version of Huxley. One of Huxley's unique features is the character advancement model.
Banish any thoughts of Planetside's certification system, if that's what you had in mind for Huxley's character-development. The system, believe it or not, is actually a lot more akin to what you'd find in a traditional MMO. On the surface, anyway. Huxley Studio's Producer Kijong Kang (read: the big cheese) puts it this way: "Our focus on the character development system is to make distinctive game play styles [available] as characters becomes stronger rather than enhance or increase a character's power itself." Plainly put, your characters won't get "stronger," per se, as they level up. Rather, they'll be able to do more stuff. In this way, it's not totally unlike Planetside's certification system. There just seems to be a bit more to it.
Release Date: TBA (PC (http://www.gametab.com/pc/huxley/4295/), XBOX360 (http://www.gametab.com/xbox360/huxley/4296/))
I love a dash of RPG with my FPS.

Sounds alot like Battleground Europes system, where extra weapons and classes are unlocked the more you develope your character. Its good in that it allows new players to not get to swamped with all the options.

I think it's important that all basic character functions be in place before the upgrading begins. So for instance, you shouldn't have to upgrade to lvl whatever before you can run at full speed. Maybe later, when you get more experience, you can run like a cheetah, but keep all basic FPS attributes intact, plz.
And from what I've read, that's what they're planning on doing.

I don't get it. Is it a joke or are you serious?

...What the hell? That's the basic idea behind Planetside's system, and nothing at all like most MMOs. Gamespy, sure, but still; they could at least check this stuff for sanity.
Anyway. I'm interested, but was disappointed to hear they're not going for a larger scale; not a big fan of instancing. It also sounds like they're spending a bit too much energy on the PvE side of things for my taste; I'm almost afraid it will end up combining the worst features of Planetside and Neocron. On the other hand, maybe it will actually be fun. Wait and see, I suppose.

If they can pull off the PVE part of the game, I'll definetely be checking this out.

I'm hoping that this mmo fps gets it right. Planetside suffered from the "rat hole" syndrome.

Is it bad that I don't know what PVE stands for?

Not really, if you don't follow MMOs much.
Player vs Environment, for what it's worth.
[At least, I think so, I don't follow MMOs much either]
Planetside had the right idea IMO with its certifications. It meant that new players weren't significantly disadvantaged against experienced players. Higher level characters have access to more stuff (weapon types, vehicles) but didn't do any more damage, etc.

I agree with Nein89, the amount of focus that seems to be on PvE is dissapointing. I can't imagine playing an FPS game where I farm kills over and over again so that I can gain enough experience to wear a certain type of armor.
Personally I agree with others that all the needed FPS abilities need to be there to start off. Otherwise people who join the game later on will be discouraged when they get repeatedly ganked by players who have 3 times as much armor and 10 times more powerful weapons, who can jump through the air 5 times their height and run 6 times as fast.

That's exactly what Planetside makes you do, except it's pure PVP so if you can't find anyone to shoot you can't level up! It's AWESOME!
Think more like blending Battlfield 2's ranking advancement system with WoW-style instanced challenges and I think you have what the designers are shooting for. It could be big.

This could be the greatest game ever if the FPS elements are fun and interesting.
I want to pwn noobs like I can in UT2K4 and Counter-Strike. . . I don't want to be the victim of paper/rock/scissors or spend most of my time running from spawn like I did in Planetside.

I played planetside though, I thought the FPS controls was loose at best.
Oh and just as a comment on Huxley, if those are screenshots I'll eat my hat. Passing renders off as screenshots in this day in age usually pisses people off more then it gets you attention.

Yes and yes. An MMOFPS requires exactly two things to be done correctly:
1. A core FPS gameplay element, if the player is skilled, let them be skilled, don't hinder player performance by requiring the typical MMO of obtaining levels/gear to compete in pvp.
2. A large world that changes based on player action. Let us take over towers/compounds/cities/empires that will hurt the opposition and benefit our side.
It's really that simple, why complicate things with PvE anyway...
I expect my royalty check anytime now.

If this is anything like Planetside count me out. Having to run for 5 minutes to battles, and crappy innaccurate weapons plus having to unlock anything decent does not equal fun. Since this is a Korean MMO, I wouldn't be surprise if you had to spend weeks working up a character so that you can have controls that are responsive.
Okay, so after reading through the whole article, it looks like it contradicts itself. They say you don't get stronger, but get more options. Then it talks about better armor and weapons, and double jumping. Somehow they think that a level 1 character could kick the ass of a high level character with heavy armor and a rocketlauncher? Yeah, and a low level character in every other MMO can take someone of greater level too, as long as they don't move.

Well, I hope your hat is made of meat.
Go here (http://media.pc.gamespy.com/media/738/738456/vids_1.html) and download the higher res (but still horribly low res compared to PC or HDTV resolutions) demonstration.
Also, keep in mind that this video is from June of 2005. . . so it isn't optimized by any means.

Not bad looking at all. I wish they would've shown some good in game combat footage though. After playing PlanetSide through public beta and the first few months thereafter, there is a huge hole in my heart where an MMOFPS should be (mother fucking balancing passes...). I'll be most interested in this game as it progresses through development to delivery.
