Visit Steampowered.com to pre-load the game and be set to play at 12:00 pm PST on Friday, when the Free Weekend begins. Join the ranks as Axis or Allies troops located in Western Europe during the height of the war in 1944. For more information, visit www.steampowered.com. (http://www.steampowered.com.)
I have still never tried this. I have tried Half-Life 2 for the Xbox. It sucked ass.

DOD:S is okay. The environments are stale as hell. Nothing moves, no wind nada!
So that destroys the feel. The game is a bit aggrivating sometimes, too.

DoD:S is the same ol' DoD, it just looks better. If you liked DoD, you will prolly like DoD:S.

Meh retail is out this week, I'll end up picking that up, thats what this is though I guess, a "demo" of the sorts for people just waiting for a good solid state release of the game.

I have played Half-Life 2 on the PC. It was Ok. A little dull. The engine was nice, but they didn't seem to do much with it.
It lacked the character of the first game. In the first game you felt like you really were part of the story, in Half-Life 2 it felt like just another shooter.

Either you didn't play much of HL2 or you're just jumping the jaded shark.

I agree with Evil. The problem was the story was pretty crappy. Ending in cliff hanger after waiting years to play it was just F'd up. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it, just that it didn't have the same feeling of accomplishment that the first one did.
If it was episodic and I knew a new episode was coming in a month, then it wouldn't have been a problem. It's going to be a couple year wait for the next installment though.

I enjoyed HL2, but it wasn't OMGWTFBBQ or anything.
I know it's amazing, but some folks just didn't see it as the greatest game ever.

Did you really play HL2?

HL2 was a great game. Sure, it wasn't the greatest game to ever be released but some people just really seem to have it out for the damn thing.

I played this on my brother's PC a little while ago; it is basically the same ol' DoD, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
I'm going to take full advantage of this... oh wait, I'll be in NY and away from my computer all weekend. Shit.

Not being able to say HL2 was great, or more than that is unbelievable. You must not like FPS games in general in order to think that. The last stage was probably the most fun Ive had with a game.

I really hated the last stage of HL2 to the point where I wish I could have clawed out my eyes. Other than that though it was fantastic. And what's this about waiting years for it to play out? Is it just me or is the expansion coming out sometime this year?
Oh yeah. On topic. DoD:S roxarz my boxarz.

HL2 is cool for the physics and shit. But honestly, the engine is... I hate to say it.. It's shit. Although I can't remember the problems off hand.. There are so many things I find wrong with it.
It's not THAT impressive, really. It feels 'thrown together'.. and that's why people had so many weird bugs and shit.
HL2 single player was fun the first time. The end was the coolest part, however it was sort of lame.. too easy. Although I think that was intended to show how strong and godlike you had become... which 'ok' I will deal with that.
I have the strong urge to play HL2 again.. but I only remember the fun parts of the game.. I bet if I tried to play it again I'd remember the annoying "run around to get to the place right next to you" bullcrap. Just the annoying puzzles and stuff, you know? Not a whole lot of action really

DoD sucks unless you like shooting people while running around like a greased pig with the accuracy of said pig.

I'm gonna check out the free weekend of DoD Source for sure. I enjoyed DoD for HL1 and haven't tried Source version yet.

HL2 is a blast the first time around, after that it kinda looses some of its amazement, but Ravenholm still and will always scare the fuck out of me.
DoD:S would be a lot more enjoyable if it didn't crash my computer with random 'cannot read memory at...' errors all the time. Seems to be a known source engine problem, but unfortunately the 'fixes' are to do things that I have already done. So much for writing good code.

abso, my problem was crappy RAM. you may want to switch ram chips in their slots, that might work.
dod is a pretty interesting game. it actually encourages camping, for example I love the spot in dod_avalanche, just outside of allied spawn and in the church, campt that with mg42 for a while, it is just pure bliss, and somewhat lame.

I played DoD for a while back in the day but lost interest after about a month or so. Since then it's been done better by other mods.
Now lets see some QW:ET or TF2 already.

Evil, it's pretty clear you haven't played HL2 all the way through. I beat it on PC and am now enjoying it on my couch via the Xbox version, which has a few framerate issues toward the and but is still great.
Bitching about random issues aside, this is a pretty sweet way to get more people to try the game. Hopefully we'll see more of this from multiplayer only games.

Yes, and this also shows something really cool and unique that Valve can do with Steam.

Kind of funny I was playing DoD: Source last night. It was just like the original DoD, which was always great. I only wish they left the bayonet on my kar98, I used it quite a bit. :(
HL2, very enjoyable. Obviously a sequel to one of the best FPS ever is going to have trouble delivering. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and gameplay: the vehicles sequences and the end-game zero-point gravity gun were incredible. Taking out th flying whale things and striders was also memorable.

Why does it suprise anyone, that an adult that still reads comic books, didn't like Half Life 2?

Whoa, that's just mean. I'm an adult who still reads comic books, and I love Half-Life 2. It's not even worth pretending comic books are only for kids these days.

DoD:S has been great fun since its release and the new maps that have been popping up (valve and fan made) have really kept it going. Any of the EA crowd here have some favorite dod servers? You'll find me on Texas Militia alot or the Minsitry of Peace server (clan-mop.com) Alot of servers (including the MoP server) have excelent stat tracking and scoring too.

With a cumaltive score of 95.7% on gamerankings.com, I can't all this "OMG, teh HL2 is teh spawn of satan because it's not exactly like the first game."
Fine HL2 wasn't at all like HL1, but forget HL1, HL2 is a revolutionary game no matter how you look at it, everyone's loving the physics effects in games now, where before they were just a cheap bell to but on the back of the box.
And DoD:S. Thank god that for once an multiplayer FPS has some strategy more than 'Kill them before they kill you'.
One of my favorite servers is Soldiers of Foriegn wars. They reallly cut down on the 12 year old cursing factor there.

Funny how a thread on DoDS turns into one on HL2.
Back to the topic at hand I love DoDS. I play it nightly and have found a pretty kick ass server with a great group of players...POW
I tried switching to Call of Duty 2 and it held my interest for a few weaks but now I'm back to DoDS. The graphics are brilliant and the gameplay is super addictive.

Are those servers east or west coast? I mostly play on Rogansheroes and Angryoldfarts. I've been playing DoD for what seems like forever, and still love it. Wish they'd add the British back in to source, but Valve seems to be taking forever with their mods. Can't believe CS:Source JUST got another model. Anyway, I go by [SGS]Howizter Von Bismarck in DoD:S.

I used to play alot.. and now I'm starting back up again. I play as "Hans from Germany [OwP]"
..not that the Online Warfare Pact exsists anymore, but like a recovering alcoholic, I use to spend too much time trash talking. With my [OwP] tag, I am reformed and follow the OwP rules.
My name is Hans from Germany, I am a member of OwP. I am guilty of trash talking.
I will look for this MoP server, this evening.
