View Full Version : New HD 2D Sonic For 2010
http://evavhost.com/i/news/newsonic.jpg
Good news everybody! Sega realises that Sonic works best in 2D and is developing a brand new adventure that will feature HD graphics. They intend to try and recreate the successes of the original and may well feature a new look for Sonic.
The new game, code-named Project Needlemouse, will debut sometime next year on as-yet unidentified consoles. So far, the only glimpse of the game has come via a mysterious teaser trailer, which only shows the outline of the new look of the hero at the end.
"Speed returns in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up" declares the teaser trailer, before showing a blue blur zipping across the screen scooping up golden rings. Accompanying it is a litany of sound effects and visual cues from the first Sonic the Hedgehog, who launched worldwide in the summer of 1991 on the Sega Genesis system.

The only issue with this is that there was more to the originals than speed. There was some amazing platforming along wth the rollercoaster ride.

I do not have a good feeling about that outline...
Hard to imagine Sega finally getting it.

Ya know, if they released something very similar to the original genesis sonic games, Downloadable only, for around $15-20...I'd buy it no question. It doesn't need to break my mind with ingenuity. It doesn't need to be a full-blown multi million dollar development. And it doesn't need to be on a disc.
It just needs to capture that old Sonic feeling. Bring back, that Sonic feeling...whoaohoooh.

That outline in the screenshot looks very similar to the "wing" design for the title screen on Sonic 1 or 2.
Possibly 3 or Sonic and Knuckles...
I hope they might do a "HD-remix" of all the titles on one disc.
Original soundtrack, with original Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles design.
And for the love of God, it's Dr. Robotnik!
Not this "Eggman" shit...

fuck Eggman! :D, 2010 does sound futuristic :), if they redo it all like mario all stars id eat it up yum.
Its about time it sunk in that making stuff 3D does not automatically make it better!

The "Wing" design is from Sonic 1 and 2, but Tails is no where in the frame so it would seem to be a direct copy of the original Sonic character frame.

Honestly, I'd prefer SEGA just lie to me and instead of making a "new 2D adventure" they would directly copy every Sonic game from 1991 to 1994. I'm kind of terrified now because there are many things they have yet to do right for a long time with the franchise...
Bonus Stages to earn Chaos Emeralds
Multi-part paths and hidden areas
A strong, speed-based platforming mechanic
Kill off Amy, Big The Cat, Silver, Shadow, Princesses and any other unnecessary clowns
Do NOT try to tell a story. Let me make one up as I play.
hell why cant sega release the sonic dreamcast games as Xbox live games I enjoyed those

They can improve the series by discontinuing it.

Finally, a group gets it...2D gaming isn't dead. In fact, 3D gaming was killing your property. I wonder if the success of Shadow Complex had anything to do with this? Either way...we need more stunning 2D displays of gaming beauty. Playing through Wind Waker again, and it's amazing how beautiful that world was...to see it in HD is a thing of glory! 2D "sprites" in HD with good animation is truly stunning.

This is the only way Sonic will be a success again.

We've been promised and promised and promised again and again "No really guys, THIS time we made a good one!" Yet year on year it is failure after failure. Dare we hope to dream of a god's-honest good Sonic game again? I feel like an abused family member, but I can't help but wipe away a tear and look up from the floor when they say "2D".

The visuals of a game are just the pretty wrapper around what must be good gameplay. Too often, when a series is remade, they make a prettier wrapper and the gameplay goes downhill.
Understanding the true depth of this truth is the key to making a good sequel. Meditate with me now, "Ommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm."

Well I think the true depth of it is that certain types of graphical upgrades make good gameplay IMPOSSIBLE. WHen a game ebcomes overanimated (such as when a character has to finish their animation routine before htey can accept new inputs) and when games use imprecise control due to analog sticks having to be present and whatnot... they can't possibly succeed.
