While there has not yet been any sort of formal announcement, SEGA did reveal that original Sonic creator Yuji Naka, and character designer Naoto Ohshima, are bringing Sonic back to its roots to create the most intense sensation of speed ever experienced in videogames with an innovative combination of art, physics and game design.

This looks depressingly similar to the Dreamcast "Push forward and watch the pretty things zoom by" gameplay.
Except it doesn't look that pretty.

Isn't that what all Sonic games are about?

The old sonic engine sucked really bad. The kiddies might of buy the sonic games and enjoyed them for some unknown reason. but if all they are going to do is make it look prettier. Blah!!!

Sort of, but with the 2D versions you at least had some control over Sonic. For a "next-gen" game, those screens sure looks like the old Dreamcast version (graphics and gameplay wise). I hope I'm wrong, but the best Sonic game I've played in a long time is the one for the DS. I want to see a 2D sonic game with next-gen graphics.

I'd be so happy if this one was good... here's to hope.

You know, the Sonic 2d engine was great, there hasn't been one 3d sonic game I've liked, including Sonic3D ;)
I picked up Sonic Rush this Christmas, and I LOVED it. It gave me that "things are happening too fast!!" feeling, and for the first time in a LONG while I felt like I was playing the first sequel to Sonic and Knuckles. Super fast (the rush burst makes it even faster), incredibly fluid, a 'trick' mechanism for earning boost and the oldschool half-pipe bonus stages from Sonic 2 controlled with the DS stylus. It lived up to the Sonic name where I feel many others have failed.
Coming off of such a great title I'm hoping SEGA doesn't disappoint. It doesn't take much to make Sonic fans happy, make it fast, fluid, frenzied, and so freaking cool you'll want to play it over and over again, and you have the recepie for a happy gamer :D

Naoto Oshima? I guess Artoon folded. He hasn't been with Sega since NiGHTS.
And this one will suck. Just like every other. Which pains me to say, because I am a Sonic fan. Only thing is I'm currently just a fan of Dimps' 2D iterations, the above post mentioned Sonic Rush, which is truly an excellent Sonic game.
And apparently - Sonic's eyes and shoes are made of glass this time around. I guess they couldn't think of anything better to do than make it reflective. His eyes look spooky.

Artoon is currently working on Blue Dragon with Mistwalker.

If you think this looks like a Dreamcast game you are obviously high.

As long as there are no guns in this one, I'm fine with it.
I recently acquired a Sega CD with a few games.. and I just can't stop playing the Genesis Sonic 2 /w Knuckles over and over.

Hm, my mistake then. I just wonder why Oshima went back to Sega - he was one of the founders of Artoon, if I remember correctly. (which obviously you should take with a grain of salt now :) )

Good to know that developers aren't wasting next-generation technology to create trees and grass that moves. Because, you know, that would be so unrealistic.

They are trying, although they still have quite a few problems with showing screenshots that actually move.

Same shit I hear everytime they whore out this franchise. Personally, I'd love another game with the quality and feel of Sonic Adventure, rather than the peice of shit sequel. I don't think I'll ever play a platformer with that much atmosphere ever again.

Screenshots that move huh? Hmmm That MOVE perhaps when we attain the technology we can call them MOVE-ies... Bah, that's ridiculous ;)

ive seen most of these awhile back.. a bit meh.
Wow, this hardly looks next-gen. Low resolution textures and polygon models.

If you check the screenshots that show the day/night cycles and look at them back-to-back, you'll notice that the trees and grass stay perfectly still.

I remain optimistic the Rev controller will be intuitive enough to fix the 3D Sonic Crappy Camera (TM) problem.

I thought the series became pretty poor when Sonic became a franchise piece. Save the dozens of extra characters for the racing/Kart games and keep the focus of the main games where they belong.
I heard good things about Sonic DS taking him back to his roots, but haven't picked up a copy yet.

Worthplaying have replaced the pictures with "Removed at SEGA's request ...". Were they really that bad? :)
