View Full Version : PS3 Slim Numbers Limited?
http://evavhost.com/i/news/ps3slimboxedfixed.jpg
A post in our very own 'Console Games' forum deserves the front-page treatment. It appears that Sony are trying to swing things in their favor when it comes to the sale of the highly-anticipated Slim version of their PlayStation 3 console.
koconutmonkey has reported that Sony is, according to his experience, requiring distributors to guarantee a 1.5 attach rate to each console sold. To put that into numbers this means a retail store will have to purchase 15 Sony branded accessories or games along with an order of 10 Slim consoles.
This strategy may well be an attempt to compensate for the loss Sony have stated that they make on each console sold but it may also point toward Slim numbers being...slim.
If there are a limited number of machines then Sony would be more inclined to sell to distributors in a manner that is most advantageous. If stocks were less...slim they would make it as easy as possible to shift their stock.
These are assumptions but however you take all signs point towards Sony believing that they have a winner on their hands.

Are they now actively trying to piss everyone the fuck off instead of just doing stupid shit?

Sony's been doing that since the PSP.

They seem to be doing their own thing and not paying much attention to the competition. Go for it dude.

I suppose I should get my preorder in right now, before a majority of them end up selling on CL and eBay at inflated prices. They should be doing everything they can to keep these things rotating on to store shelves - demand for peripherals and games will skyrocket on their own, no need to create an artificial shortage to sell your product. We already know the PS3 is a brilliant piece of equipment, not just a novelty item that will drop in sales once everyone has experiences the initial land rush.

wow this almost made me fall off my chair. Great post.
I think they are definitely trying to inflate numbers and just force people to think they are better. I think they just can't understand why people wont buy a better system with little games...

I'm sold upon the arrival of The Last Guardian—absent evidence of Sony's rush to fulfill this, my desire; polish that beeyitch... and buff up those old Fumito Ueda games while you're at it. ;)

I picked mine up yesterday, along with Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction and Metal Gear Solid 4.
well, it sucks for vendors, and it sucks for ME if i can't get one, but otherwise, it's really just fine for us, the consumer. Cheaper prices on the core console, and w/ all that extra stock, maybe the stores will have to sell the controllers and other crap at discount prices to go along w/ it :)

- There's no reason to assume that. Far more likely and understandable to reason that Sony has simply found a way to break even on each Slim.

If Sony's losing money on the Slim, it's good news for them too. Fewer units available probably means fewer units sold. All I know is that I love my PS3 and I want more friends to get one and spread the love. :)

It's going to be interesting to see the sales numbers coming out. Sony selling the new slim, Microsoft cutting the price on the Elite and Pro, and Nintendo holding still at it's price point.

So the company every retailer hates because they were burned the past few years sitting on excess inventory is now trying to strong arm these same retailers into buying more inventory that won't move?

If you want one now go to any Best Buy and pick it up. We where able to get them first before any other big retail chain ( Gamestop doesnt count). Also for the "have to take 15 for 10" thing this happens alot more then you think in retail especially with high demand or high volume items.

Yeah, a company can only force an attach rate like that when the product is in high demand. Retailers probably expect a brief one month surge of Slim purchases before it settles down, if they are willing to go along with such a deal. But, it doesn't win Sony any friends.
