District 9 dropped less than 50%... if these numbers hold. That's actually a really good 2nd weekend for the type of movie it was and the type of hype it had.
Inglorious shattered Tarantino's previous best opening weekend, that's kind of surprising. Looking forward to seeing it. Hoping it's better than the terribly boring Death Proof.

Evil you have awful taste in movies. First the James Cameron hate and now Tarantino hate. Death Proof wasn't that great but Pulp Fiction, Reservior Dogs, Kill Bill, and even Jackie Brown were all great.

Harsh. Then again, in a world with Ashlee Simpson, I can understand people hating people they don't know.
Went to go see Inglorious Basterds this weekend but the projector broke and ended up watching GI Joe instead. *sigh*

Inglorious Basterds was quite possibly the quickest 2 and half hour movie ever. It was really good, hovewer if you are a major freak for historical accuracy then you may have some problems with the film to say the least..

Tarantino has a knack for you getting involved with the characters and actually care about what happens to them. To me it's a tossup between him and PTA who can write the best dialog.

Inglourious Basterds kicked ass. I went to the midnight screening and Quentin Tarantino came out to present the movie to our screening. A very nice touch that led to a great movie.
District 9 was kinda crappy.
So many silly decisions and dumb answers.
Spoilers below head's up
The main character was so against shooting the prawns, but he was laughing when they torched the eggs?
why did his hand change so fast but the rest took so long?
How did each species understand each other's language?
Why didn't the prawns use those insane weapons to kill their oppressors?
Why did they build the camp right next to a big city?
It took 20 years for the government to move the prawns to a new camp?
Why did the government allow nigerians to live in district 9 and trade weapons?
Why didn't the prawns tear the nigerians apart and just take their cat food?
Where did the prawns get money from to buy meat/cat food from vendors?
Why did he run from humans when he was in a 12 feet tall machine that was decked out with guns?
Wait for rental...

Yeah, I don't particularly care for Tarantino either. I haven't really enjoyed eny of his movies. Pulp Fiction is okay, with some great dialouge between Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta. The Kill Bill movies were just awful.
But I actually think Inglourious Basterds is going to be the first movie from Quintin I'm going to like. It looks so entertaining.

...and they're all the same. Speak witty profane-laden lines, kill, act cool, repeat.*
*Doesn't apply to Inglorious Basterds (yet), which I haven't seen.
The main character was so against shooting the prawns, but he was laughing when they torched the eggs?
He didn't want to kill Prawns in front of other prawns due to fear of inciting a riot, which nearly happened. To my knowledge there wasn't any prawn around when he torched the eggs.
why did his hand change so fast but the rest took so long?
What was it, one day for his arm to change? And at the end of the movie (about 3 or 4 days) half his body was changed? I don't understand this one...
How did each species understand each other's language?
(copied from a FAQ I read on IMDB)
"The prawns have lived integrated with human society for over 20 years. Because the new species was so heavily impactful, many humans must have learned to understand the prawn language in that time period. Especially hired MNU workers serving as ambassadors between the two species. It is important to note no species learned to speak the other's language, only understand it. Humans did not speak prawn, but they understood it. Prawns did not speak human, but they understood it. "
Why didn't the prawns use those insane weapons to kill their oppressors?
(also copied)
"...without their queen (or any of the "smarter aliens"), they were unable to band together any form of effective resistance. Blomkamp explains: “Also, it [the hive mentality] sort of explains why they don't turn on the humans. Individually, they may be feeling oppressed, but they don't have it together enough to form a resistance and back one another. So I found that really interesting.”
Why did they build the camp right next to a big city?
(copied)
"The slums were already there. Many people were relocated from the slums when the prawns first made contact, because rights and property for the prawns was a big issue back then. The only change is that District 9 was segregated and walled off from the rest of society. Explained in the introductory documentary style clips. "
It took 20 years for the government to move the prawns to a new camp?
Relations finally got too strained?? Takes awhile to build a camp that will contain 2 million (and growing) population.
Why did the government allow nigerians to live in district 9 and trade weapons?
(copied)
"District 9 was very loosely secured by MNU. This was exemplified in the movie by prawns able to sneak out of District 9 although they were prohibited and Wikus easily sneaking into District 9 when he was a fugitive on the run."
Why didn't the prawns tear the nigerians apart and just take their cat food?
Answered above (without "Alien Queen" or anyone of the "smarter" aliens they are unable to band together.)
Where did the prawns get money from to buy meat/cat food from vendors?
Didn't see any paying money, just trading weapons/etc.
Why did he run from humans when he was in a 12 feet tall machine that was decked out with guns?
What I got was he really didn't care about Christopher (at this point), and also he needed his final redemption (for what its worth I thought this part was quite odd as well.)
But at the end of the day, movies are firstly supposed to entertain, so honestly if the movie is entertaining and well made, why sweat the details? Also it seems Sci-fi movies in general take the A LOT of liberties with realism, but usually people still love them (Battlestar Galactica) and do not try and tear them down for not making complete sense.

WTH are you talking about? Inglourious Basterds was a great movie, one of the best of the year easily. Definitely in my top 5 with District 9. If you're not a fan of Tarantino, or dialog in movies, this isn't going to convert you, but if you liked any of his previous movies, it's an easy sell. And neither is it a flop financially.
Tarantino is one of the best modern film directors, so why would you want his career to end?

I have no problem with people with no money pirating stuff they would never see anyway, but publicly flaunting it is quite another story altogether. Blomcamp made an awesome movie called District 9, and for that I rewarded him with buying 2 movie tickets, and enjoying the hell out of it. You rewarded him by buying a bag of Cheetos to watch it on your computer, and seem quite proud of the fact. Congrats, your contributions to the arts are very much appreciated.

>>Why didn't the prawns tear the nigerians apart and just take their cat food?
Answered above (without "Alien Queen" or anyone of the "smarter" aliens they are unable to band together.)<<
Also, if they kill the Nigerians where are they going to get more cat food? They obviously weren't able to obtain it on their own because if they could, the black market would have never existed in District 9. Supply and demand requires the presence of the supplier.
Everything in the movie made sense. It wasn't a movie documenting twenty years of decompression as the prawns acclimated to life in Johannesburg. It was a movie about the way things were 20 years after they arrived.
And regarding a 'smart alien', I got the impression Cristoph was probably one of the ship's officers but after the command structure broke down due to the situation becoming desperate and the subordinates stopped obeying the command structure, self preservation took over and he just sort of aquiesced to mob rule given the circumstances. For all we know, the other 'officers' may have tried to quell the aliens as they were derelict on their space ship and they were torn apart by the angry masses for trying to control the situation. And if he made that decision twenty years before the events of the movie, he probably just decided to do his own thing and got used to looking out for himself.
I also got the impression that he sort of 'remembered' that he was one of their 'officers' when he suddenly realized he had a responsibility to his people to bring them back home after him and Wilkus broke into the lab to get the cannister and he saw all the experiments taking place. This makes sense if he was once a leader who'd long given up in the role until something staggering jarred him back to his senses.
The movie's not perfect, but none of the complaints lodged in the earlier post in this thread are valid.
I'm thankful I ignored criticism of District 9 and just went to see it. One of the best movies I've seen in years.
As for the Tarantino dislike, I don't get it. First I don't get why you would be so melodramatic as to say you dislike all creations from a certain director, many of which you no doubt have never seen. Second I don't understand how anyone could passionately dislike Kill Bill 1 and 2 if they appreciate campy movies with a lot of action, amusing dialogue, and an engaging story.
I mean... you dislike a director so much you want them to fail? Where does that even come from? I don't care for Nicholas Sparks movies, but I just ignore them. I don't experience any level of angst when I hear A Walk to Remember 2 is coming out. I just ignore it.
Haters gotta hate, as it is said.

Well, if a director gets big enough (and Tarantino is) they can change the landscape of movies released (which he has). So not only would he be releasing a movie you hate every few years, he'll spawn several more movies on his influence alone, so it's a bigger scope than just that director.
However this love of Tarantino doesnt effect me negatively, cause I love a lot of his movies too.

This makes no sense. Tarantino is a film geek of the most ridiculous level. As a community of nerds (even if this site is focused on gaming) we should be celebrating him, not dissing him.
