MGM and Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment today announced their agreement to develop an MMORPG based on the popular Stargate SG-1 science-fiction television series, Stargate Worlds.

Stargate Worlds provides players with a form of ranged combat unique to MMORPG that will take full advantage of modern and science fiction weaponry, cover, and terrain. Players will be able to form squads with their friends or use bots for players who want to go solo. Squad leaders will control maneuvers and objectives through an innovative combat control interface. Players may choose to create characters that are members of either the SGC (the Good Guys) or the System Lords (the Bad Guys).Get more Stargate Worlds details (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=31525) over at WorthPlaying.

Er... bots? In an MMORPG?

So is it comprised of a lot of instance dungeons that you can take computer controlled characters in to help you out?

Out, Fucking, Standing!

I've been thinking/saying for a while that this IP is a great setting for an MMORPG, and if this turns out well, it will be the first MMORPG I sign up for.

Hope this one goes better than Alliance.

From the sounds of what they're saying combat-wise, and the potential of running through Stargates all the time, this could be great.

I really enjoy the Stargate series so I'm fairly interested to see what they do with this.

Methinks Stargate is one of those cursed licenses. I remember hearing about an SG1 game being worked on way back in the Playstation days. MGM didn't have faith in SG1 as a property, dropped the game (doh!) and crushed the developer. SG1:Alliance is another story of heartbreak associated with SG1. If I were a dev, I'd stay away.

If it gets popular it could lead to an Atlantis expansion pack.

The vague outline sounds slightly Guild Wars-ey, which could be interesting. I'll definitely keep an eye on this one, and hope for the best :)

I'm interested, but right now I'd have to lay my money with EGO... Stargate just seems cursed, game-wise. =(

I don't know. I want it to work, not because I follow the SG-1 series, but because gameplay sounds interesting. However, when you have an established license and have to point out in the article which are the good guys and which are the bad, it doesn't sound like it has the following it will need. I will definitely keep my eye on it though.

My thinking exactly.

Wow another first time developer making an MMORPG. I have to agree with others, the stargate license is cursed. Right now people are interested in stargate but the show was just canceled. Given a quick development time of 2 years and people are not going to be as interested. Their fan base is shrinking not growing.

This is the wrong time to make an MMO for that license and people are going to realize that in the next few years and kill the project. I say that because it certainly looks like MGM created this dev house for this project, so they will also be the ones to pull the plug if it looks less then profitable.

I'd love to get in on the beta test.

I am dvided on this.

On one hand, it could turn into another Enter The Matrix.

On the other hand, Stargate is awesome, and it could be good.

but the show was just canceled.

Do you have a link to an annoucment from SciFi, or is this just another instance of the persistent cancellation rumor that comes around every season? I just Googled "Stargate cancellation" and, other than numerous stories about the Alliance game being axed, the only relevant link I found was a discussion of the rumour from 2003.

There are bots in Guild Wars as well. You can hire them in town to fill out your party.

wait, no swords?

can they DO that in an MMO?

A tactics-based MMO in the Stargate universe? Delicious.

As someone who has seen every single episode of SG-1 and Atlantis, I wholeheartedly endorse this game and/or sandwich.

I'm a huge fan of the series (both of them), and I think the Stargate universe is great for a MMOG. However, I hope to god they bring something new to the genre. I am seriously getting bored out of my mind of the EQ-clone style MMORPG. I'm currently playing EVE online, mainly because the gameplay is so much different than WoW, AC, DAoC, etc...

Less MMORPG, more single player RPGs! Single player RPGs are so much better for me than MMORPGs... waaaaaaaaah :'(

Eh? I thought Sci-Fi announced both Stargate shows were renewed for next season a few months ago... did something change and I missed it?

No you didn't. I think the poster of that rumor is mistaken or stupid, or maybe even both.

An Atlantis expansion pack would be a great idea. A few of the gates could dial out to Pegasus, but only to those who've payed for the expansion. And the GMs? Ascended.

And yeah, both shows are returning next year. They're consistently Sci-Fi's highest rated shows, with Battlestar Galactica close behind.

This could be awesome. I'm really hoping that it doesn't tank just like every other game that was associated with SG.

I tried watching the first SG-1 season, and was horrified by how bad it was. Yes, I've heard from fans that it gets better along the way, but my first impressions weren't good at any rate.

But this game sounds really cool.

The series doesn't really hit its stride until season 3 or 4. I just re-watched the first 8 seasons and even as an established fan, season 1 was hard for me to watch. I also think that both SG-1 and Atlantis are sub par this season.

As for the game I hope they can pull it off. Sounds fun.

I thing with Stargate is that its a very character driven show. The reason I think the show gets better after the first couple seasons is that the characters are solidly established, so the writers can finally flesh them out. There are more "inside jokes" they can poke fun at and they don't have to worry about explaining why the characters act/feel the way they do.

I've noticed the same things with my other favorite shows, X-Files, Friends, etc that the first season is definately not up to the same level as the the handful after.

Great... a Stargate game that's a clone of a game I hate (Guild Wars). Also, one of the worst ideas for an MMO, ever. There are what, like fifty people total if you added up all of the SG teams? Ya, that's definetly something that should be playable in an MMO.

I'd agree with that, I was with SG-1 until season 9... then my enthusiasm just wained a bit. I have no respect for a series that can't end itself. I.e. you know they will run for as long as the ratings are paying for the show, and plug it when the ratings drop, rather than fufilling an awesome story arch. I think they should have finished SG1 in 6 seasons, then started the spin-off Atlantis if they wanted to keep the universe alive. American shows seem particularly bad about stopping the show when the story should be stopped, rather than when the ratings kill it.

Season 1 was tough due to the Daniel Jackson-centrisim and Michael Shanks' really bad James Spader impression.

Once Shanks decided that he could be a real boy, Richard Dean Anderson stopped looking so embarrased all the time, and they let Teal'c learn a little english, it picked up.

I like Ben Browder in the recent series, though I don't like the new enemy at all. For some reason "we're megalomanaical snakes that jump in your head and make your eyes all glowy" comes off in a sci-fi series easier than D&D wizards with bad complexions.

The system lords? I mean what era does this game take place. Teal'c just killed Ball last weekend, so that should be about the last of the gou'ld. Funny thing though, if the Ori and Ancients are both Altarins why haven't the Atlantis team ran into any signs of a split up.

Baal dead? I doubt it, that guy is as immortal as SG1 :) Anyway when it zoomed back to the "corpse" of Baal he was still breathing, dunno if that was bad acting. Fingers crossed for a decent SG MMO! (gimmie puddlejumpers dammit).

Holy shit I must of missed something... I'd like to think Teal'c knows how to kill false gods... Sure chamber can bring back any number of gods but I mean 3(?) blasts from a staff weapon should of put him out then and there... And on atlantis, the wraith say they are going to earth, what's the ori to do...

:-P

Baal has many clones.... They could kill him off in many episodes and it wouldn't matter.

Yeah, Baal was on earth, and the end shot of that episode showed like 6 baal's lounging around.

Something about a company on earth getting into cloning techology. They cloned his host body, and the symbiote within, apparently copying all knowledge along with the cloning.
